Sleeping Regression

So Audrey, who is 12w, was sleeping through the night, from 9pm to 5/6am from about 1 mo up until a few days ago. The last few nights she has been waking up for one feed in the middle of the night (each night is a different time) & then going back down & sleeping until 7am. I've also noticed that she has been falling asleep closer to 8:30pm then her usual 9pm. I understand that she is sleeping a little longer so is probably hungrier, but it stinks having to wake up again in the middle of the night. Is this normal? Is this happening to anyone else?

Re: Sleeping Regression

  • Yes! We dream feed at 10 and he was sleeping until 5ish. Now for like 5 nights in a row he's been up at 2.
  • Loading the player...
  • I haven't been doing a dream feed b/c she doesn't usually take it. Just her feed before she goes to sleep. I wonder if it has to do w/ a growth spurt or something.
  • My son went through this at 12 weeks as well. It lasted a little less than a week. Now he's back to sleeping from 8pm-5am before waking up to eat.

Hopefully it doesn't last for you either!

  • If it makes you feel any better, LO does a 4 hour stretch, usually from 8ish to mignight-ish and wakes up every 2.5 hours after that.... Looking forward to sleeping through the night one day!
  • @smashbaby111 I hope you are able to sleep through the night soon!
  • DS is 11.5 weeks. We consistently get up once or twice in the night to eat and several times to put a soother in. Only once did he go 10-6 without a feed or waking up. I am very very jealous right now.

It's likely the start of the 3 month growth spurt. Who knows maybe this is the spurt and you won't have to do hourly feeds!!! Fingers crossed for you that it doesn't last long whatever it is. This is their way of preparing us for the dreaded 4 month sleep regression. I might leave town for that one...just kidding ;)
  • DD's sleep is all over the place now! She's 14 weeks, for about a week or 2 she used to sleep 10 hours straight then she went back to waking up every 1.5-2 hours!!! Then it was 3-4 hours but last night she only woke up once idk if it's wonder weeks, growth spurt, sleep regression i just know i'm tired! Lol
  • You're lucky it's just one feeding. My son usually goes down at 9pm then is up at 2, 4, and 6. At 11 weeks he decided for a week that wasn't enough and went to bed at 9 and got me up at 12, 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, and then 9am for a whole week!! It was terrible my son has always been a great sleeper. Luckily, he's gotten back into routine, actually starting to wake up a little less at night. Got me up at 2 and 5 last night!! Hoping this means he'll start sleeping through the night soon.

@smashbaby111 Mine does the exact same thing!
  • Same exact thing happened to my 13 week old! I'm not sure why, but it's tough to not be getting as much sleep. She started sleeping through the night so early!
  • I'm with the other mama's that are getting up a few times a night.  My lo will be 12 weeks tomorrow and has never slept through the night.  But then again everyone's definition for "through the night" is different.  I am just happy with a 4 to 5 hour stretch at this point!

  • DD went through this about a week ago, at 12 weeks old.  I think it's the double-whammy combo of a growth spurt and a sleep regression because they're learning something new.  We went back to normal after about 5 days.
  • My LO is 12 weeks and for the past 4 days has been doing the same thing. I hope it passes soon!
  • My dd is 16 weeks, up until 13 weeks we bed shared and she slept from 10pm to 9 am then we switched to her crib and she did great-9pm-5am, up for a quick 15 mins to feed then back down until 9. Well this past week has been hell, up every 2-3 hours .... She hasn't done that since she was 2 weeks old and gained back her birth weight. I'm going crazy....
  • I think the 4 month sleep regression has come early at our house!
  • I haven't heard of the 4 month sleep regression. How bad is it?

My DD is almost 12 weeks old and for the past few days she's been really sleepy (grouchy and rubbing her eyes a lot), but it seems like she's so sleepy she can't sleep. Whenever I put her down she either fidgets and rolls around constantly or she'll sleep for 30 minutes and wake up screaming. She's also teething so I figured that was the problem.

There is a sleep regression/growth spurt that happens around 12 weeks, so that may be what's going on with your daughter.  My 4 yo never went through this "4 month wakeful" thing that everybody on the bump talks about, so I say don't worry about it until/if it actually happens.

Everyone has warned me about the 4 month sleep regression. Depends on your baby. I know my nephews were waking up almost hourly. I'm praying DS isn't like that.

But I've also heard that once you get through the sleep regression it pays off and LO will start doing much longer stretches or sleeping through the night! So for those of us whose babes aren't doing that yet it's something to look forward to!!! For those that are, there might be a setback around 4 months and then go back to STTN.
  • Apparently it's not really a regression, it's a permanent shift in the way they sleep. But at first they don't know how to shift themselves from active sleep into a deeper sleep so they wake up all the time in the night/during naps. And it's also the same developmental leap when they become more awake and alert, so they fight naps. Overtired double whammy!

On the other side is a more alert, more mature baby, but the transition can supposedly be rough.

We've had about a week of terrible naps with lots of crying and nights with a bunch of wake ups (when previously LO was sleeping from 9-4 or 5 regularly).

Thanks @Curlygirl84 This sounds like what we could be going through.. Any tips on how to help LO with this transition, or will they just naturally master the shift? Also, any idea how long this will last?? We are now on night 10 of waking.

I'm going through the same thing. LO used to sleep 9-4 or 9-5 and now he's up EVERY 3 HOURS. DH works out of town for two weeks at s time and DS (15 weeks old) has now been doing this for almost 2weeks so I'm totally alone AND GOING INSANE. I honestly don't know how to get him back to sleep without nursing him every time but I'm nervous that going to be doing this foreverrr.
  • This bums me out, she's been sleeping through the night since 3 weeks and we're only on day 3 of this wakefulness, bummer!
  • We're on day 9. I have no tips. It seems to be getting worse each day actually.
  • I think we are starting. Either that or it's just the 3 month growth spurt. DS went to sleep at 8, woke up at 11. I rocked him back to sleep and he woke up as soon as I put him down. Fed at 11:30. Did soother duty at 1:45, 2:45 and 3:30. Fed at 3:45. Sigh. I'm really regretting not going to bed at 8 with him...
  • Okay we were getting worse each night too!! Last night was an improvement.. Only up twice. Everything I read said he needs to be able to put himself back to sleep on his own. When he was sleeping 8-10 hours I was nursing him to sleep, so I know that was an issue. Yesterday I started all of his naps and bedtime 15 or so minutes early so I could put him down awake and not fussy. We seemed to make some progress. My advice to anyone not going through this yet is to get LO used to sleeping without help from you!! I wish I could deliver this advice to naive, bragging-about-her-baby-sleeping-through-the-night me, about a month ago.
  • We are just now pulling through. It took about a week and LO is finally starting to sleep 5 hour stretches again. I was pretty close to losing it one night lol he was up every hour and a half. Me with my great timing chose this week to also transition out of his swaddle and to start him on the E.A.S.Y routine.
  • My little chunk sleeps one 2-3 hour stretch from about 10-1 and then snacks every hour until I go to work the next morning. Yeah...tired is an understatement. :) But it won't be like this for long. This is baby number three....all three and under. I guess that's why God created super mom strength!! :)
  • FWIW I have nixed the dream feed, (She was eating then going to bed around 8ish and then I would wake her for a dream feed around 11ish) then she would sleep until 7. For the past 3 days I have just been putting her to bed like usual and letting her wake up on her own to eat. Each night it has gotten better. The first night she woke around 3, then 4 the next and today it was 5:30, it was about a seven and a half hour stretch. (She did go back down until 7) Not sure if this will help anyone but I thought I would throw it out there.

I think it's hit my lo. The last week she's been up 2-3 times a night, the last two nights every hour. 2:30, 3:30, 4:30, 5:30, and 6:20. I think in the last four hours I've slept maybe one hour. Hoping this is over soon!!
  • My LO had this earlier this week for 3 days, and now we're back to the 6+ hour sleeps. I still find it hard to know whether this was a growth spurt or sleep regression. If it was the a growth spurt.... The regression is yet to come. My LO moved her bed time due to the last couple days though, from 8:30 to 10:00 pm.
  • It's been going on for two weeks straight now, 15weeks. I'm afraid it will never stop and I will never get my sleep back again! We were doing so well, and he was doing 8 hour stretches! Now we are back to 4 and waking every hour.
  • Marms1987, I'm in the same boat!
  • Almost 14 weeks and we are having a nightmare of a time, too. Until last Friday, DS would sleep from 8:30 to 3:30, with another feed at 5:30 and then up at 7:30. It seems like overnight, I went from knowing just how to soothe him to having some strange crabby baby who doesn't respond to anything that used to work!!! We have been up just about every hour for 5 nights now... Feeling like a zombie at work. DS has also gone from napping like a champ in the P&P to now only napping while being held. Hoping this is a short phase...
  • Same boat Here:(
  • I think we're headed there too.... it helps to know I'm not alone! You can't help but question yourself when things change for seemingly no reason.

OMG this same thing happened/is happening to me right now!
