Amniocentesis

what are your thoughts? Has anyone had one? Is it painful?

Re: Amniocentesis

  • For us, we don't have family history risk or age related risks. I didn't like the risks associated with the procedure. I had a natural childbirth with my firstborn and only 2 ultrasounds.

  • From what I understand, it's only recommend for people who have high risk factors -- either a high probability of trisomy based on an earlier screening (like NT), family history, or advanced maternal age.

I don't anticipate that it will be indicated for me (I'm not quite old enough), but if in any event my doctor recommends it, then we will probably do it.  She only recommends it if she feels the risks are warranted based on other test results.

  • I have a chromosome abnormality so I had amnios with my first 2 pregnancies and will again with this one in about 3 weeks.  It's really not as bad as it sounds a little uncomfortable while it's happening but afterwards I was just fine.  They just advise that you take it easy for the rest of the day after you have it done.
  • My family doesn't have any risk factors. and the amnio comes with a set of risks on its own. Not necessary for me.  If you have the risks involved that merit one, discuss any and all risks with not going one versus doing one.

  • At 35, I'm considered advanced maternal age (I know!  I feel like a spring chicken!) and my eldest tested positive for a genetic disorder (further testing proved she was just a carrier of the gene).  I had the NT u/s and a MaterniT21 blood test as per my OB and peri in lieu of an amnio. My OB actually is the one who suggested it.  Ask about that as another option for the amnio should you need one.
  • Thank you all so much!
  • I had one due to a very high risk of down syndrome.  It really didn't hurt much at all.  It was sort of a strange feeling, but it was over so quickly that I really did think, "that's it?" when it was done.

There are a lot of reasons for and against doing them, but for me, I wanted definitive answers since I was so high risk.
