What do you think of this name?

So I'm letting my husband choose the names this time and I'm not sure how I feel about his boy name pick. He has chosen the name Damian. His reasoning is because he was named Damian at birth but when he was adopted they changed it to something else. So I competely understand why he wants this name but all I keep thinking of is the devil. What do you all think?

Re: What do you think of this name?

  • I think it's an acceptable name, but I also think of the devil. What other names does he like?
  • Loading the player...
  • i think of devil too. what about a middle name?

  • I don't think of the devil at all when I hear/see the name Damian. Not sure what the association is. I think Damian is a perfectly good name.
  • @indibidule the kid from the omen is named damien .
  • And that would explain it. I've never seen The Omen. Personally, I don't think that a movie, especially one that the kids he knows won't even have seen, shouldn't be a factor in the name. If it were a bigger movie, like The Wizard of Oz or Frozen or Finding Nemo, something that kids of every generation will see, then maybe, but otherwise, don't let that bother you or deter you from a name with special meaning to you. :)
  • I don't like it (I'm sorry!!!!!). Can you incorporate some other part of his birth name?
  • Agree with PPs on the omen connection but agree it's still a nice name. Did his adoptive parents change it for the same reason I wonder??

  • I would like the name if it weren't for the omen! I think devil too. Like PP said, kids his age won't have that association, but our generation still will, so his teachers bosses etc.
  • I'm sorry, I agree, I think devil immediately. I think the Omen reference is pretty relevant.
  • My first thought is the Omen.

Maybe use it as a middle name?
  • I'm not a fan but to each their own.
  • The middle name would be Lee after my middle name. Also he has no other boy names. He is very partial to only Damian.
  • I like Damian Lee.
  • I think it's a great name my cousin's son is named Damian, he certainly does not make me think of devil even when he's being a grumpy teenager. And the significance to your DH seems huge. As others have said, using it as middle name would be a good compromise.
  • Seen the movie the omen maybe never paid attention to the boys name like that lol didn't know that's what it was but it makes me think of Damon from Vampire Diaries lol and he's such a cute bad boy. But no doesn't make me think devil. A name will only be what you link it to I've came across plenty of people with that name and they were really nice people.
  • I'm not a fan tbh, but what if you name him Damian and call him Ian?
    Dam- Ian ??
  • I haven't seen that movie.. But I knew the most lovely guy in high school with that name. He used to get called by his surname - 'hunter'. He may have also been called Damo. He was Everyone's mate. Any child would make the name their own I would have thought. Surely there are some 'nice' stories out there about 'Damiens'.
  • Devil kid from only fools & horses!
  • My nephew was named Damian. Most of my family laughed about the devil reference (behind his parents' backs) but everyone got used to it, and I never thought of it that way anyway. His nickname is Damo but I still like the full name better.

I think the reasoning for naming yours Damian would outweigh the Omen connection, and as the kid grew up people would only think of your Damian, not an old movie reference. And I'd be highly surprised if kids at his school had watched it when he was a bit older too ;-)

If my understanding is correct... Daemon is a ancient word used to describe demons in Greek mythology. Damian is only linked to the devil because of the movie and it's relation to the spelling Daemon. The meaning of Damian is, "to subdue." Which perhaps adds to the demonic connotations.

To be fair, there are several Christian saints named Damien.

ETA: The Omen (haven't watched it myself), was originally released in 1976, then remade in 2006. Personally, I wouldn't bank on the movie reference going away anytime soon.

I believe she explained it best. However, my little brothers name is Darrien, and believe it or not, many people mistake it as Damian and when they do so my first thought is never "the devil". I think that it is probably really important to your husband to have such a large role in the begining of your sons life. It will probably mean so much more for him in the long run, to have been able to make that decision, and give it some sentimental value as well. Especially for him to be able to relate it to something that made him who he is. I think over time, if you do decide to name him Damian, that you will associate it with the personality that your child developes and his unique-ness as opposed to any thought that you had of it before. I wish you the best of luck! Maybe if you cant get past that feeling you could settle as it being a middle name? Thats how alot of my relatives have passed on their elders names. For instance, my fathers name is Scott, so him and my mother named my other Brother Jacob Scott. My before mentioned brother Darrien, has the middle name Trent, that is my mothers maiden name. My middle name is Diane, that was my mother, and my grandmothers middle name. And last but not least my youngest sister Zoë was born after my grandmother passed away, and her name was Vickie. So my mother named her Zoë Victoria. There are many ways to incorporate sentimental value into your childrens name. Hope i helped!

I've never seen the movie or looked up the name and still related it with demon. I'm not sure why. =/
  • I don't think of the devil. I love the name Damian, it was my top name for atleast 6 years.

Never watched The Omen. I know a few Damians and no one has ever made a reference to the devil. Is it really that much of an issue? I think it's a lovely name, especially since it is so significant to your husband.
  • I watched the movie but also know other Damians from college. I never thought of the devil.
  • I think it's a nice name. I wouldn't let a movie that he will know nothing about ruin something that is obviously very sentimental to your husband.
  • I've never seen The Omen so I don't have that connotation at all...that said it is the name of one of the brother vampires on the Vampire Diaries, lol, but he's a hottie, so I personally have nothing but good thoughts of the name ;)

  • I know a guy whose name is Damien Oman. Haha. But I think it's a great name. Your only going to keep thinking devil if yo keep referencing the name to a stupid movie.
  • I haven't seen the movie and am not religious, so I have no connotation for the name. I love both the name and your SO's personal connection to it!!
  • vampire, I definately think vampire.

  • My husband and I named our son Damien Alexander in February 2011. I've always loved the name and as soon as I found out it was a boy I knew right away that was going to be his name. Even knowing about the movie The Omen I didn't mind naming him Damien. It's just a name, it doesn't make the child any less than others. Yes my husband and I joke around when my son starts getting out of hand but that's just fun and games. Something to tease him about from time to time. If that's what your husband likes for a name I say go for it! You'll love him just the same.
  • I think it's nice how meaningful it is. Could you do a middle name that starts with J and call him DJ?
  • Thank you for all of the input and we found out yesterday that we are having a boy! We sat down and talked about names and I was completely going to accept whatever name he chose but he decided to go with Colton Lee. He said he doesn't know if he is ready to deal with the emotions connected to the name Damian. Sooo our baby boy will be named Colton Lee!
  • Cute name! Congratulations on the boy!!
  • Congratulations!  Colton Lee is cute.
