Canadian Moms: EI VENT

Warning: This is a MAJOR vent.

I started my maternity leave May 4th. It is now August 7th and I have not yet received a dime of EI pay!!!!!!

For the past 3 months I have spent countless hours on the phone with EI and my HR. My HR screwed up and sent incorrect info to EI which made them say I wasn't eligible for maternity leave pay. I've been at my job for over 3 years. Full time. There's no question that I'm eligible.

So it takes me months to get HR to send the right paperwork. Just got notification from EI that I'm not eligible because I VOLUNTARILY left my job in January. Umm no I didn't!!!! I have no idea where they got this from.

So now I get to go down to Service Canada AGAIN with LO to try to straighten this out. I would call the 1-800 EI number but you can only call during the day and my cell has limited minutes. I've gone over my limit the past two months because of all the time spent on the phone with EI. So now not only do I have no money, but I have a GIGANTIC phone bill.

Has anyone else been dealing with EI and having troubles? I'm so mad right now!!!!!!

  • I'm so sorry to hear that! Sucks! My ROE (Record of Employment) had to be sent twice cause the first time it was wrong, big fail on my HR part. Are you waiting to get Maternity Leave pay or Parental Leave? I'm sure AB and MB EI works the same, but I would maybe clarify that with Service Canada. You may not be eligible for one of the two. Maternity Leave you can take up to 7 (? I think) weeks before your due date (And you say you stopped working January) or on your due date for 17 weeks. After that it's parental leave. (I had to read service Canada stuff a million times to make sure I understood). Maybe you may just not be eligible for maternity leave but you for sure have to be eligible for parental leave. What I AM waiting for, and haven't received yet is Child Care Benefits. I applied the same day I submitted her birth certificate, and she'll be 3 months next week- sigh. I hope you get it figured out soon!! :(

  • I'm in the same boat!!! My maternity leave started may 1 and I hadn't seen a dime until the middle of July. It took several phone calls and multiple visits to the service Canada office and finally I got some pack payment and they promised I would start receiving bi-weekly payments.... Skip ahead two weeks and nothing in my bank account. I make yet another trip to their offices to be told that because I'm working on my masters it's screwing up their system and automatic payments are a problem. I was so pissed I told the guy "so you will pay people who abuse the government programs no problem ... But me I'm trying to further my education and you want to withhold money I deserve"

So now I can never rely on those payments coming in... Thankfully I saved a bunch of money when I found out I was pregnant because I've heard EI can be a pain in the ass.
  • EI is saying I stopped working in January. I actually worked straight up until starting my leave in May. I've verified that I'm eligible for both leaves. My HR also submitted an incorrect ROE so I had to send in a second one. The second one was wrong. So I had to do a third. Finally got all of that worked out and now EI is somehow screwing up and saying I quit in January.

I also haven't received the child benefits. I think that one comes on the 20th of the month. I've heard that it is usually in the 3rd month that it goes through. So I'm crossing my fingers for August 20th.
  • Maybe federal elections are screwing us over haha... Oh Canada (la la la). Hopefully you ladies figure it out- it shouldn't be something we should be stressing about.

Glad to hear I'm not the only one but sorry you're going through it too.

I'm just thankful DH got a job when he did. He graduated in April and started full time the day I started maternity leave. Not sure what we would have done if we didn't have his income right now.

I lucked out it seems with the government stuff - got my EI right on time, and I got child benefits in July, as well as a tax credit benefit.  My school board, other than sending the ROE were dolts though - because I gave birth a day early, it messed up my final pay deposit so instead of fixing it during the 2 weeks they had to do that, they just cancelled it, and my summer salary portion, and did I mind driving 2 hours to PICK UP a cheque?  They just couldn't possibly deposit it into my account that every other pay for the past 15 years had been deposited into...

    Good luck ladies!
  • That is actually ridiculous. Luckily I got my EI within a month of applying and haven't had much of an issue. But my friend still hasn't received hers and she had her LO May 15th and desperately needs that income to come in. I can't believe how often they mess up there and it's okay.

My DH and I are splitting parental leave so I know it's going to be a huge pain in the ass when I go back to work and he goes on pat leave.
  • I went to Service Canada today. They flagged my file as "in dire need - cannot pay rent or buy food" (an exaggeration but I won't argue). Should be getting a call from EI by Monday at the latest. Crossing my fingers that this solves things. If not I'll be demanding to speak to a manager of some sort.
  • Awesome! I'll keep my fingers crossed for you too!
  • My own EI processing was okay (thankfully) but my friend/coworker who had her baby May 6 had some troubles. When she called EI about it they said they didn't have her ROE... She asked them to check again because our ROEs got sent in at the same time and they had mine...after a bit of convincing the lady on the phone double checked and the ROE was right there the whole time ...ugh
  • No problems here, but I've heard stories. Hopefully it gets straightened out for you ASAP. It sounds like it's more your employers fault though rather than EI

My employer is definitely to blame for a good portion of the delay. But now it's in EI's hands and still no money. My workplace has already gotten an earful about this. I'm hoping the EI mistake gets cleared up quickly.
