Crossfit Mamas

I think there might be a few of us in this BMB, so I thought we could discuss how we are approaching everything here.

I told my WOD buddy this week (before my parents!) because she would have figured it out by my slacking (nausea) - and because I didn't want her to try to push me too hard.

My coach just left for the airforce, but if they find a permanent replacement, I'll let him/her know in a few weeks. I already modify things for a bum neck, so the rotating coaches are used to that.

Have you made changes yet?

Re: Crossfit Mamas

  • Two of my coaches actually knew before DH! I told them immediately because I needed them to be aware of why I wouldn't be trying to get any PRs or avoiding rX on some lifts I'm less confident in, or in even simpler cases just so they know why I am taking more of a breather between sets. The head coach and owner is my primary trainer and he's doing even little things like making sure one of the industrial fans is pointed on me.

The only modifications I've made so far is avoiding things where my risk of falling is greater. They are building some American Ninja Warrior obstacles to add in to some WODs so sadly I didn't get the opportunity to try out the peg board last week.

  • I'm glad I'm not the only one who told people early!

That's awesome that your box is so supportive, although I'd expect nothing less out of this community.

So which movements aren't you doing, aside from the obstacles (sorry about those!)? Box jumps?

I did a few box jumps when we were introducing skills and not in a timed WOD, but they make me nervous on a regular day, so it's step ups from here on out. I've done burpees twice since finding out, but won't after the first trimester (even now I go down much more carefully). I didn't do a wall climb (8 feet up, again, too easy to fall even if I never have). I think that's it so far. I also went to singles instead of DUBS halfway through a WOD where there was 400, but not completely cutting out DUBS.

There are a couple other people aside from the coaches that, know because they overheard me telling the coaches...I actually can't wait to tell the whole box, because of the whole community aspect :) I found a shirt on etsy that says Workout Buddy with an arrow pointing to the belly. And we're taking our gender pictures at the box! DH and I will have bars (he'll likely do an overhead lift, I'll do a front or back squat), DD will have black dumbbells, then we'll have a little pink or blue dumbbell on the floor in front of us :-D

  • I'm stopping my lurking and saying hello!

I haven't told anyone yet at crossfit other than my best friend who goes to my same box, but will likely tell my coach soon. I told her last month early but it ended up being a CP so I don't want to repeat that if I can help it.

I'm not planning to change much at this point other than trying to stay cooler. I'm in AZ and our box has a swamp cooler, no a/c, so it tends to be pretty warm. Just need to monitor and make sure I'm not overheating! Today was actually my last day of coaching, so at least I can go straight home and take a cold shower now if needed.

Open air warehouse in south Florida here...the overheating concerns are real!

Eta: @AEG84 I thought I recognized your username from TTGP, glad you made it to the BMB!

  • @imrachellea, I thought I recognized yours as well! I've been lurking like I said in my other thread :)

You probably have it worse in Florida - our heat is at least fairly dry most of the time. It's so much worse on the humid days! I seriously cannot wait for it to cool back off, though. I work out in the morning so once it gets back into the 70s at night it will be SO much more bearable. The lows in the mid to upper 80s are just killing me.

  • I have been going at 8:30a during the summer, but when I head back to work next Thursday I'll get to go at 5:30a the mornings DH doesn't go running, otherwise I have to go in the evenings...brutal during August, September, and even part of October. I just swim in sweat...

  • Good luck with the heat, ladies!

I'm in DC at an older box with fairly consistent AC, so that doesn't concern me too much. Our coaches are typically good about not having us run outside when it's sweltering.

I am glad that I got a fitbit Charge HR so that I can monitor my heart rate during the more intense WODs.
  • Glad to see other people are still working out! I found out I was pregnant about 2 weeks ago and have still been working out. It makes me nervous, but I think I've been really good at listening to my body. There's been a few high intensity cardio workouts that I've had to slow down a lot in so I don't get completely winded, and I haven't been able to do the super heavy lifts because they've made me really light headed. Other than that, I've been keeping everything the same so far and just taking more breaks and drinking LOTS of water!
  • @stephpl - I told my coach yesterday and said my only goal for the next few weeks is to not get sick. That got a chuckle.

Definitely drinking more water and taking more breaks, too.

I have no experience with crossfit, but DH does it and there was a woman that had twins and she still worked out until close to her EDD. Modified of course. A good friend of mine did crossfit during her pg too.

I'm a runner. With DD1, I ran until a few days before giving birth. With DD2, I started training for a marathon right after getting my BFP (I was already signed up for the race). I ran the whole 26.2 miles at 20 weeks pregnant. Granted, my slowest time by far, but I finished - and I wasn't last! This time around, since baby isn't mine, I will still run as I'm able, but I promised my Intended Mom that I wouldn't go crazy so I will have to work in swimming and spinning too, especially towards the end.

Working out is SO good for mom and baby! Stuides show that baby's heart is more efficient if mom worked out during her pg :-) Keep at it, ladies!

  • @OpheliaChem - I am super impressed. Right now, I'm swapping rowing for running because running makes me super nauseous. I can't even imagine long distance.

Definitely agree that there are so many benefits to exercising during pregnancy!
  • 4 weeks, 6 days here.....
Hubby told our crossfit coach yesterday morning and he is sending us some reading material on ways to modify some movements during pregnancy. Luckily the box owner and his wife are pretty versed on crossfit during pregnancy, as they have a little one.
I cannot believe I am already feeling so tired this early on!
  • That's fantastic that your coach has reading material, @JDK625!  My coaches have experience working out with pregnant coaches, but they haven't trained too many. My box is in the middle of DC, where the population is single people without kids.

I hear you about being tired! I had no idea my energy would be zapped so quickly!
  • @JDK625, please do!

  • Sounds great!
  • I have been doing crossfit pretty steady since March. I have been afraid to return since I found out I was expecting almost 2 weeks ago. I'm just over 6 weeks. I really want to return as I'm going crazy with it. The last few times I did go tho I felt like I was going to be sick and pass out. It used up all my energy for the day. Any suggestions?
  • Thank you for posting this!! Although not a member of crossfit, I do participate in bootcamp classes and have been for the past 3.5 years. I will not be stopping, but am preparing myself for modifications.

Do you all have heart rate monitors? If so, what is your target HR? I may be investing in one soon. I have a lot to learn about exercising while pregnant!
  • @jayjo12 - You can definitely still do Crossfit. Just don't go to the point of utter exhaustion. I think most of us have told our coaches so that they can help us modify as needed.

@kas172 - I do have a monitor and will probably cut myself off at 140 instead of 165. But, everyone is different.
  • Ok ladies... my bum neck went out tonight while PRing presses.

I obviously can't use the muscle relaxers I keep on hand for these events. And, I just realized that most topical muscle aids aren't safe for pregnancy either.

I don't have a chiro appointment until next Friday.

    Any other suggestions?
  • @Julesby did you get your neck issue worked out? I hate when that happens!

How is everyone doing, workout wise? My strength work has been great (PR'ed my squat clean & jerk today by 25 pounds!) but I'm sucking ass on the WODs because I just get so out of breath. I don't think any of my classmates will be surprised when I announce I'm KU.

  • @AEG84 - I have only been back once since the injury. My neck was doing better but all of the workouts at the end of the week were heavy upper body/core workouts, which aggravate my neck. I'm traveling a lot this week, but hoping to go 4 times next week.

I'm with you on the WODs. I drag.

Hope everyone else is doing well!

I'm still doing Crossfit 6 days a week plus running about 2-3 miles a day (with 2 sports bras on!) I still lift heavy, but I'm not maxing out anymore. I read the article from Crossfit on working out while pregnant and am probably just going to follow those general guidelines. Workouts are progressively becoming more challenging, and I learned very quickly that my body can't handle me going 100% during every workout...if I do I throw up and get dizzy (already...) so I'm trying to learn how to stay competitive and get a good workout on, but not kill myself. Im also trying to stick to my macros, which is hard with major protein aversions (meat, shakes, eggs) but with some creativity I've been able to maintain my usual macro intake.
I would say that if you do bar mu's, burpees, chest to bar, etc...just be mindful of your boobs...if your not you will get a very quick and uncomfortable reminder that they are indeed very sore!
  • This is the article I was talking about...it's a good resource!

I've also already told everyone in my Crossfit classes and the coaches at both of our gyms know, including our yoga instructor (who is almost 8mo preg and still Crossfitting!) - it wasn't easy to hide and we wanted to be safe since the coaches are on a rotating schedule!
  • @hilchere I'm impressed you're maintaining macros. I'm lucky right now if I can get any protein in - carbs are all that sound good. I lived off of tortilla chips this weekend :\">

Our two morning coaches know, and a handful of people in my classes know as well (my BFF, a guy who likes to hog the spot under the swamp cooler, and one other girl I'm usually competitive with). It's getting harder to hide the more I suck at workouts and with having a lot more nausea in the morning. Oh and boobs hurting more doesn't help either - scoprions and high knees in our warmup this morning were torturous!
    image
  • I now dread pushups and burpees more than usual. Ouch!
  • I told my coach as soon as I found out I was pregnant, because I was so out of breath and tired and had to take some breaks during the WOD. I'm not doing any modification to the WOD so far, beside going slower. Apparently, the shortness of breath gets better after a while, so can't wait for the second trimester. My energy will be better too.
I'm trying to stay in front of the fans and drink a lot of water during and after.
I'll be really happy when my belly will be too big for burpees!

  • How's everyone doing this week?

I am finding that my only goal these days is to make it through a WOD without getting sick...
  • My workout yesterday turned out pretty good. Actually ended up near the top of the whiteboard for the WOD, which isn't typical. But I just could not stop feeling overheated, even standing directly under the swamp cooler! Seriously ready for it to cool off overnight here (still in the low to mid-80s most nights).

  • Welp, I've been out of CF for a week now. I threw out my back last week thanks to a bad mattress on a camping RV. Thanks to the perfect storm of the hormone we release in pregnancy that makes muscles seize up more quickly and not being able to treat the muscles as I normally would, I couldn't walk for 3 days without assistance. But, I am on the road to recovery and hope to be back on Monday. Otherwise, I might go insane.

How is everyone else doing? (TaraphaniehilchereJayJo12imrachellea
  • I'm doing pretty good. Starting to finally feel less tired. I'm still out of breath really quickly, so I usually go slower during the WOD. I don't do anything that requires me to be upside down, because I get dizzy really fast these days. The coaches have been fantastic helping me modify the WODs and making sure I wasn't overdoing it.

  • Competed in a Crossfit competition last week and survived! Also PR'd my clean and jerk this week. I'm almost feeling back to normal!
  • I haven't been in a week due to nausea getting much, much worse (to the point where I've been throwing up almost nightly - and I work out in the early morning when I go). I've actually lost 3 pounds in the last week :/  Our owner has also been programming a lot of things I'm not comfortable doing now, like rope climbs, and I'm not quite ready to tell everyone why I'm not doing those movements. I'm hoping to get back in on Friday, though!

@stephpl - WOW! How far along are you? I'm REALLY hoping that the nausea dissipates in the next week or two. It's getting old real fast.
    image
  • stephpl - That's amazing!!

@taraphanie - I completely understand not going upside down. Aside from nausea, my sinuses can't take it anymore either.

@AEG84 - Hopefully we'll both be back soon! I hope Friday works out for you!

    @Chadyse - I'm super impressed!
  • Is it weird that some of the only times I don't feel sick is when I'm doing a WOD lol. I've changed nothing other than the fact that I'm not rxing my workouts and I take more frequent breaks. I'm 9 weeks and I've still been able to do everything that I've usually been doing. As I get farther along I'll nix the burped though
  • @AEG84 I'm 11 weeks along. I only had a rough couple of weeks from weeks 7-9, but honestly working out has made me feel better every time. I work out at night after work, so maybe it just keeps my mind off the stressful day. There have been a couple of days that I needed a quick 10 min power nap on the couch in the gym just to get going though ;)

I was super nervous the first few weeks about doing a lot of movements, but after having a positive ultrasound at week 10 and the doctor giving me a thumbs up for everything, I feel almost back to normal other than having to take more breaks on cardio intensive workouts.

Man, I wish my schedule would let me change it up. I even think going to 6:30am instead of 5:30am would help. I need more sleep than I used to!

I'm not too concerned about most movements, but for whatever reason we've had tons of handstands, box jumps, rope climbs, and running programmed in the last week. Running has never been my favorite, but especially with the nausea it is just not happening. Any inversions or off-the-ground stuff is also not going to happen RX right now, and I just don't want the questions for a few more weeks.
