Game of thrones

My husband likes the name Arya and so do I, I'm just worried about how popular it might be this year with game of thrones being such a big hit. I never wanted to pick a name that might be popular but I do really like it. What do you guys think, does popularity really matter if you live the name? Thanks for your help!

Re: Game of thrones

  • My nieces middle name is Aria. I personally don't know any little girls with that first name. But I have seen it on here a lot. I personally wouldn't name my child a very popular name. But if you love it and so does your husband then go ahead :)

  • I don't think it's everywhere right now, but it is certainly rising in popularity.

Well Aria is one of the trendiest names there is right now just check out the SS stats on it. It's insane so yes I would avoid Arya. Honestly I like the sound of it but it's trend city

Edit: plus this isn't a case of classic popularity but pop culture insane popularity that will be dated like Jaxon/Jackson/jaxson etc

  • It's a wonderful name, picked after such a strong little girl. I do think Arya is going to become such a common name soon, though. Game of thrones is a very popular show. If you and your husband love it and you're set on it, I think that's all that matters. I plan on going with a name I love, no matter how common or rare the name is :)
  • It's becoming very popular. I know 2 Aryas under the age of 2.

  • Very popular right now but if you love the name then I think that trumps popularity.

  • So, for what it's worth.
    Given Name ARYA
    GENDER: Masculine & Feminine
    USAGE: Indian
    OTHER SCRIPTS: आरय, आरया (Hindi)
    Meaning & History
Means "honourable, noble" in Sanskrit. This is a transcription of both the masculine form आर्य and the feminine form आर्या.

I would use Aria if you love the name.
  • I also would spell it Aria. That name is also from Pretty Little Liars so I'm sure some people who have used it first heard it there.
  • I love the Arya character in Game of Thrones. But I'd avoid the name until the book and tv series end. You never know what will happen with characters. She may take a turn, and suddenly a bunch of girls are named after an evil villain book character

  • It's also one letter off from Aryan. Like Aryan Brotherhood and skinheads and all of that horrible stuff. If you like the name, I would go with Aria.

You're going to think I made this up but several years ago I read in the paper about a girl named Aryan Nation and her brother Adolf Hilter. I think there may have been a third sibling but I don't remember the name.

Sorry to hijack a little there OP but it made me think of it. I liked the name Arya but I was afraid I'd look like a fan girl.
I read about that! The parents got mad because Wal Mart wouldn't put one of the kid's names on a birthday cake.

Our number one girls name was Aria and we decided not to because of it's intense rise in popularity right now.
  • I love the names Sansa and Cercei but, pretending they weren't a total invention of George RR Martin, I don't think I could use something so closely associated with something specific like GOT. I think GoT is awesome but my kid might not.

Yes.  Love GoT but my first thought on this name is almost always PLL.  I do love the name though even with the pop culture references and increased popularity.

That's the exact gif I wanted to post but I can never get mobile gifs right! Great minds think alike.
  • We named our son Ari before the GOT craze.

You would not believe the number of times people have made the reference. Personally, I'd steer clear of Aria/Arya.
