Tips/Advice for transitioning baby to crib-HELP!

LO has been sleeping with us in bed since birth... He wouldn't sleep in his cradle at all! It's not time for him to move to his crib so mommy and daddy can have a good sleep lol any tricks or tips that you can pass on to this ftm?

I currently feed him, which puts him to sleep and as soon as I lay him down he's up agin. I usually let him try to soothe himself back to sleep (he sucks on his hands) but with little success!

Help please :)

Re: Tips/Advice for transitioning baby to crib-HELP!

  • We follow an eat, activity, sleep routine with our LO. This way he doesn't associate eating with falling asleep. I feed him when he wakes in the morning or from a nap, he plays for a bit, then diaper change, swaddle, rock and snuggle, lay down in crib sleepy but still awake. He cries for s couple minutes and then falls asleep. When we first moved him from our room to the crib, we did it for one nap a day for a few days and then increased to two naps and so on until he was only sleeping in his crib. The Contented Baby book by Gina Ford help with timing the routine to get away from nursing to sleep.

Amen to all of this! :)
  • Awesome! Thanks I'll be sure to give that a try!!!
  • We do the same as above.  LO has all of his naps in his crib, but still sleeps in the Rock 'n Play in our room at night, but that is for my own personal comfort, not his. :)

The biggest thing is definitely putting them down when not fully asleep yet.  Then if he wakes up mid-nap or in the night, it doesn't freak him out since he's used to it and will just put himself back to sleep.

I assume you're not swaddling while co-sleeping, but that would definitely be something to do when putting him in the crib (until he's able to roll over.)  DS would never be able to sleep without the swaddling because that damn moro reflex gets him everytime.
  • Thanks ladies!

How long should I be letting him cry for when I put him down? And when I do go get him what should I be doing? Rocking back to sleep and putting him down again?
  • I wait 5-10 minutes depending on his cry. If it's a panicked cry, I go in sooner. What I do is pick him up and rock him until he calms down but is not fully asleep then lay him back down and leave the room.
  • This will sound odd but try sleeping on baby's sheets first so they smell like you. My doctor recommended this to us and it's weird how great it works.
  • Swaddle if not rolling yet. We used the magic Merlin suit. She's slept in the crib for a few weeks now well wearing the suit. It prevents the startle reflex.
  • Swaddling definitely helps. And if rolling leave one or both arms out. I use the miracle blanket. My LO didn't like the open feeling of the crib so I first transitioned her by putting a portable bassinet in the crib. I didn't think I'd have as much use for this when not traveling but it is great!-- Lightweight and easy to wash--She seemed to feel more secure. Now she doesn't need it. All naps are in her crib too. Unfortunately, I'm scared to sleep in my own room and sleep in a room closer to hers with the monitor even though I can still hear her without it (I'm a first time mom ☺️). Maybe I need my own portable bassinet
