When did people become so unkind?

I am 15w and the only group I've belonged to on The Bump community is the January 2016 board. This is my first post and will likely be my last. As early as 5 weeks, when I first started perusing the community board, I've been utterly shocked at how mean women can be to one another in their replies. Don't get me wrong, I've read some incredibly kind, supportive and empathetic messages you've shared with one another (these are the posts that make my heart smile and have me continuing to read posts throughout the board); but there seems to be just as many unkind, hurtful things communicated to one another. This is my first pregnancy and I am 31 years old. I've always considered myself fortunate to have been able to honestly experience my high school and college years without the fear of everything and anything I do being broadcasted on social media. Lately, I find myself thinking how the world my child grows up in will be drastically different from that in which I grew up in. I'm certain this is not a new concept. I'm sure our mothers felt the same way; and, our grandmothers before them... As young mothers, it is our responsibility to bring the next generation into this world and teach them to be kind, responsible, self-sufficient, successful and happy human beings. I shutter when I think that these same individuals are the ones who provided me with my very first example of cyber bullying on this board. It amazes me how easy it is for people to say absolutely anything behind the mask of technology; whereas, in "real life," I barely see anyone have the balls to be so cruel, mean and harsh to someone's face. I value honesty more than anyone I know; and, while some may believe they're "just being honest," there is a huge difference between being honest and being downright mean... It's called tact and respect. In case you weren't aware, I noticed there are TWO private boards dedicated to how unkind those within the January 2016 board actually are... "January 2016 bitches" and "burnbookJ16." I'm clearly not alone in my observation.

I couldn't care less what others think of me, as it is really none of my business. I'm sure some of the bold comments are merely an outlet of all the hormones we're all experiencing. None of us are perfect, least of all me; and, while I would never intentionally hurt someone, I've regretfully said and done things throughout my life that hurt others. My purpose and intention in writing this post is purely to share my observation in hope that just one individual reading this will take a step back and realize that kindness is one of the most important attributes we can instill and foster into our children- and the best way to do this, is by being an example of it ourselves.

That's all.

Re: When did people become so unkind?

  • I can agree but these women in January are much much nicer than my original board December before my due date switched. I was afraid to post anything because these women will act like straight mean high schoolers then act as if they are being so helpful. Just ton of cattiness that can be so hurtful and to have them think nothing was wrong or that you don't have a sense of humor it was ridiculous. But I did like how much activity was on the board seems like only a handful of women post on this board. Activity as in nice mamas posting stuff not the means ones who will make a whole post about something you said. Lol but I agree you have your nice mamas and mean mamas everywhere although I haven't experienced any mean mamas here yet.

    Hi all,
Maintaining a welcoming environment in the community is something we take very seriously. We welcome debate and engaging dialogue from all perspectives here. We do not tolerate mean behavior. If you feel you’ve experienced bullying within the community,

    Please
-Flag comments that violate our TOU by using the “Report a TOU Violation” feature below posts
-Send a Private Message to @BumpTara or @BumpCaitlin describing your concerns or send an email to communitybump@xogrp.com and include links to any threads that you are concerned about so we can properly investigate.

    Please do not:
Post on the boards about your grievances with the community or individual members. Doing so tends to result in unproductive arguments among members and escalates situations.

By flagging posts that violate the TOU and sharing your concerns directly with our moderators, we are able to address issues promptly and properly.

We will be closing this thread for further comments. Thank you.
