Teething

So I'm not 100% sure but I think my 10 week old is showing signs of teething. I don't think she's about to cut any teeth, but she is incredibly drooly, very fussy when not actively distracted and loves when I rub her gums with my (washed & clean!) finger. Like goes from a demon to talking and smiling with my finger in her mouth. She seems to be biting down lots too.
Anyway whether or not this is the start of it for my daughter, I thought maybe we could start a thread sharing tips and tricks to help babes and moms through teething.

Any moms: what are remedies that you have heard of (zany/out there remedies as well as conventional!)?

Second time and up moms: what worked for you in the past?? What didn't work that you tried?

Re: Teething

  • I don't have any advice but my DS has been the same for the past couple of weeks. He recently discovered his hands so they are constantly in his mouth. He's been drooling more which I just assumed was because his tongue keeps finding his fingers. But yesterday I noticed he started biting on his soother so I'm wondering if teething is starting. DS has always loved when I use a wet cloth to wip his gums. It's part of our morning routine, and his favourite part.

  • My kids are a lot older (6 and 9) but I used baby Oragel on them and gave them the plastic teethers with the water inside (frozen). They loved those.

Amber is supposed to help with teething but I don't know how.

I bought DD a wooden teething ring attached to a string of cloth covered wooden beads. She seems to like putting that in her mouth.
  • My DD already cut her first tooth! She's 15 weeks. She has a really small mouth so we haven't had much luck with teethers. She likes to chew on a cold cloth and when I run my finger over her gums. We use baby Orajel once or twice a day and she seems to get relief from that. The very first day it came through she got a mild fever so we used some baby Tylenol then but haven't had to use any since.
  • My dr said its ok to give older babies (6-7 months) the frozen teething rings, but not the younger ones because it can cause frostbite. I don't know for sure though. I am a FTM, but I've just been giving my LO room temperature teething rings.

My little girl will be 11 weeks tomorrow and she's been doing the same thing. She'll be all smiles and suddenly start screaming in pain. I give her Tylenol, but only before bed or if we're going out, because I feel like teething might be God's/nature's way of teaching us how to cope with pain. I try to just hold her or distract her usually. I really hope I'm doing this right...
  • I'm pretty sure my lo is teething too! She's almost 13 weeks and her hands are almost Raw she chews on them so much!! You can see the two white spots where her bottom front teeth are. I wonder how long till one breaks through?!
  • My DS will be 14 weeks tomorrow and has been teething since 11 weeks. We can see the white just beneath the gum on the bottom. We swear by the amber teething necklace. One night lo was up every hour screaming in pain/discomfort. The next day I went out and bought the Amber teething necklace and that night he slept for 6 hours straight! Since then we've noticed a big difference between when he has it on vs not. Also pop a pacifier in the freezer for a few minutes, not long enough to freeze it but to make it slightly cooler which he likes.
  • I think my boy is tweeting too, almost 12 weeks. Can't see anything in gums but he's acting like it.

This may be a dumb question, but how do teeth affect nursing? Sounds like it would really hurt!!!!
  • @ewiley63 it affects nursing when they can bite your nipple lol. My friend has an almost 1 year old that recently bit a hole through her nipple. She got very bad mastitis from it and she shook from pain trying to avoid the pain medicine they gave her that she wasn't supposed to nurse while using.

My first child I had to use a nipple shield so I had a barrier between my nipple and his teeth so this time around I am a bit nervous for those teeth to come in with my 11 week old.

That sounds terrifying!! Your poor friend!
When I was taking a course on breastfeeding for my work (l&d nurse) I learned that for the most part sucking doesn't use the gums/teeth but when learning to explore the world with their mouths many will try biting down. People have different theories how to stop that.... But to hear of someone having their kid bite right through: yikes!! That makes me want to barf a little
  • I am so glad to see this!! My LO will be 13 weeks Wednesday and has been super fussy and breaking my heart since Thursday! I actually took him to the pediatrician this morning and he said it could be a stomach bug but his #1 guess was teething. Little man has been drooly and sucking on his hand/wrist. He hasn't shown a whole lot of interest in the teether we have.. But the dr. did say to refrigerate and not freeze. He also suggested putting a wet washcloth in the fridge to soothe and also wipe the drool, haha.

I was so close to giving LO Tylenol tonight because he was so fussy at bedtime and that is so unlike him. He finally went down but I am so torn about the Tylenol.. I don't want him to be in pain but I don't want to keep giving him meds when I'm not even sure that's what's going on. I will have to check out the amber necklace @MrsWhiteToBe mentioned! I've never heard of those before.
  • My LO is 14 weeks and has been teething for about 3 weeks now. This is definitely the worst week! She is pulling away when nursing in the mornings now. She's drooling, biting fists, and let's me rub her gums with my finger. Today was the first day I gave her baby orajel and it seemed to help out a lot! I also give her a refrigerated teether that she likes. I can't see white bumps yet but can definitely feel them

  • These things have been so helpful and eased my worries so much! I didn't realize how early my babe would teeth! She is 13 weeks and has been acting so strange! (Fussy, pulling away from breast randomly, not sleeping well, and chewing on hands, then there's the drool) haha so I think she must be teething! I was so worried but feel much better knowing that's what it is. It's just crazy how my pediatrician didn't give us any warning that it could start soon! I thought it was like 6 or 7 months that babies teeth. Hang in there ladies! We can do this! Haha
  • P.S. We are BIG Sophie the Giraffe fans around here! Easy to grip and completely safe for baby to chew on! I highly recommend that tether! Well worth the $25 :)
