Baby sleeping in bassinet next to bed while dogs sleep in bed as well

I just was thinking about my situation and wondering if there are any moms out there that will have the same thing going on. My husband is a huge dog lover - not that I am not but he's like really into creating a pack mentality etc. We sleep with our dogs in our bed every night and they know their places in our king bed. One of them is a 90 lb half great dane half pitbull and the other is a border collie pointer mix who is 60 pounds. The border collie has slept since he came to our home right next to me as if we are spooning. Imagine laying on your left side arm tucked under pillow with his head pillowed on arm and the rest of him laying against chest and belly. The 90 lber sleeps between my husbands legs. I guess if I am asking a question - if anyone has a similar situation with dogs in their bed and planning or did have their baby next to them in a bassinet and how it worked out for you?

Re: Baby sleeping in bassinet next to bed while dogs sleep in bed as well

  • Dogs and cats sleep in bed with us, but we never did any cosleeping when my daughter was a baby. They now will split time between us or sleeping in her bed, depending on their mood. We have beagles, though, one of which is a tiny runt, the other two are medium sized dogs. I'd be nervous with the size of dogs you have - not that they would be vicious, but if they move around in their sleep at all they can be a pretty hefty dead weight to move back, or my dogs sometimes snap and growl in their sleep if you try to move them and they are sleeping hard, which you may need to do to yours to bf when baby wakes. I'd be careful when deciding.

  • I think co sleeping was the wrong term since were using a bassinet but @jbettles your point about how they may react when woken is very valid and something I did not consider. I will have to lean over/ move my pup that likes to sleep with me for the feedings.
  • Ok, I saw cosleeping in the subject but saw you mentioned a bassinet, as well, so I wasn't sure. I think having baby not in bed but next to bed is definitely the best option. And if your dogs do cause issue and hubby doesn't budge on sleeping arrangements, you could always just take baby to a chair or another room to feed.

  • Changed subject cause I would be too scared to sleep with baby in bed in general I think lol
  • Our dogs (two small ones, a dachshund and a rat terrier) sleep on the bed.  Not my preference, but my husband had them both for years before we ever even met, and what's done is done. Our child won't cosleep, though, so it's a nonissue. We miiiiight use a bassinett next to the bed if we can fit one in (space is pretty much too tight, though, and a pack & play is out of the question, there's no room for that in our room. We are more likely to have the baby sleep in his crib in the room right next door, because of space constraints.
  • I have a 60 lb dog that currently gets more snuggles from my husband at night than I do. The baby will be in a bassinet next to our bed too. The only problem I have is that whenever I push my dog to get him up and out of the way, he just leans back and stares at me. I've tried talking to DH about it, but he thinks it will be fine. He loves that doc. It's kind of funny actually, because he said he would never let him sleep in the bed, and now calls him into it at night.
Our plan is to try it out and see how it works, then go from there.
  • We will be in a similar situation. We have a 60 pound dog that ends up in our bed every morning, he starts the night sleeping on the floor. We will have the bassinet next to me. I don't anticipate any problems with the dog, I'm a little paranoid about my cats though. We'll probably keep them out of our room once the baby is here.

  • We have 2 dogs that sleep in the bed with is, a french bulldog and a pug/terrier mix. They're both on the smaller side, under 25lbs. The bed sharing with the dogs has gone on since they were both puppies so I can't imagine trying to change it now (plus that would be really unfair to them to make such a huge change for baby) anyway, the baby will be in a bassinet next to the bed.

  • @rholbrook7 your statement about the pup leaning back and staring at me made me laugh. When I try to get out of bed to go to the bathroom my pup just rolls on his back and asks for belly rubs. It's his way of trying to look cute enough for me not to make him move! Last night I tapped his butt and asked him to move and he stood up with his butt still on the bed I slid out and had barely moved out of the way before he slid back down on the bed! I come back from the bath room and he is snuggled up using the snoogle
  • @Yiggle09 I know for a fact that if I get up to pee, when I come back that damn dog will be in my spot, like he is right now
Is that a catahoula? We have a mix and she is the same way! She LOVES to snuggle!

Yes! He is a catahoula. They're great aren't they? He's a bundle of love.
  • I did a modified co sleep with DS1 (he was in a rock and play by the bed, I would pull him in to do side lie nursing, fall asleep, then would put him back in his rock and play the next time I woke up). No dogs in our bed but we do have two cats that sleep with us on and off. They made themselves pretty scarce when he was around.
  • We'll be doing something similar. We have 3 small dogs (each under 20 lbs) that sleep in bed with us at least part time. One is always in bed all night and the other two sometimes sleep elsewhere, they go wherever they're comfortable. Between the dogs and the memory foam mattress, I definitely am not comfortable with the baby co-sleeping. We'll have a pack and play in our room near the bed for a while, then move him to his crib across the hall.
  • We have our dogs sleep with us too. Fwiw And my own personal experience, the dogs can seriously go to hell when it comes to your pp comfort and that of your baby's. They learn to move real quick and most often will leave or go somewhere else.

  • This is my 60 lber stealing the snoogle. @LaurenNewph that is exactly how my pups feel, their bed we just lay with them in it lol
  • My dogs don't sleep on the bed per se.... we have a routine, I go to bed they get on and get about 20 minutes of snuggle time then dad comes to bed and they get off...dad gets up and the dogs get on the bed for morning snuggles and then they eat breakfast and after that the bed is fair game for whoever gets to it first but they have their own beds for sleeping at night time...the only time I expect them in the bed is when it's storming...they both have horrible anxiety dh sleeps on the couch those nights.
  • We will cosleep with the dogs and baby gets bassinet or crib! My fur babies sometimes sleep in there dog beds. Curious to see how they will do with baby noises!!!
  • We kicked the dog out of bed (full size) when I was about 6-7 months pregnant with our first...she then got her own bed next to baby's bassinet so she could "watch her" after our first she never returned to getting in our bed bc we both loved all the extra space!
  • @charmedvec that is one of the best pictures ever! Your big guy has the same look on his face that mine gets sometimes "if I lay still enough and look really cute she won't notice me"
  • We got a 30lbs Boston Terrier in March and we said that he would not sleep in bed with us. But life happens. Lol
He starts out sleeping in his bed but then at about 6:30am I go to the bathroom and when I come back he gets up and walked over to our bed and waits for me to lift the blanket up so he can hop in and lay under next to our feel.
I am guessing when the baby comes I will get up to take the baby out of her bassinet and feed the her in bed around that time and he will just welcome himself in. I may just keep the baby in bed till the morning if our dog stays by our feet.
  • Oh here is a picture of a typical morning...
  • We have a wire fox, and a welsh terrier who are both about 20lbs each. We used to let them sleep in our bed but the last two months we put a dog gate up and let them sleep on a huge dog bed we bought them. Once the baby is here, he will sleep in a bassinet in our room. Later we will move him to the nursery - to his crib. We will see if the dogs can behave around the baby and go from there...
  • Same situation here but with a black field spaniel and a large yellow lab. This post is great, pics and all!
  • We got our dog (45 lb mutt) a huge bed about 2 months ago and have been working on getting her used to not being in our bed every night. We'll be using a pack'n'play in our room but will likely end up truly co-sleeping because I am HELLA lazy and love my sleep. During the winter Rosie got used to sleeping under the covers with us, and I'm not sure if it's just because it's been so hot this summer, but she's been really great about sleeping in her bed. We'll see how it goes when it gets cold again.
  • My dogs are small so I don't really notice them, but I'd be sad if they slept anywhere else but the bed! Baby will be on a pack and play bassinet next to bed.
  • My dogs haven't fled the bed yet, despite months of my tossing and turning all night long every 45 minutes, even though I'd be fine with it if they did, and I'm doubtful that will change post-baby. They've been sleeping on the bed so many years, it would take much more than that to change behavioral patterns.
  • So funny!  Last night I woke up having about 2 inches of bed space with my legs hanging off.  Dog was snuggled up on my side against my torso and my husband was in the middle of the bed.

We have had so many discussions about this.  We got our trainer to come in to transition our dog (40 lb mutt about 1.5 years old) to having a baby in the house.  The trainer is totally against him sleeping in bed with us and wants us to get a bed for him on the floor of our room (he has a bed in the living room where he likes to hang out during the day).  I don't know how that's going to work since he always sleeps in our bed.  I think it will be fine but it will be a wait and see thing!
  • That is a routine thing for one of our dogs.  One always stays at the foot, out of reach of anybody and doesn't bother anything.  The other positions himself between us and ends up shoving either my husband or me till we're hanging off the bed. And he's only an 8 lb. rat terrier.

I would be a-ok with no dogs in bed, ever, but, again, they and their bed access WAAAAAAY predate me...I didn't start that pattern, and it's too many years in and too old of dogs to do anything about it, now.  Our next dogs will not have bedroom access, they will be socialized to pet beds in their own space from the beginning. I've been able to get ours to use pet beds in the living room during the day/evening in the years since my husband and I have been together, but they won't use them in the night. I've incrementally moved the beds closer to the bedroom, into the bedroom, even put them on the bed, and they still are completely uninterested in using them overnight.

It's not a baby issue, since we won't be cosleeping anyway.
  • Our 11 year old golden blue has a bed in our room beside the bassinet. He rarely sleeps on his bed as he feels he must be no more than a foot from me. He sleeps either at my feet or beside my side.
  • My nine year old 80lb boxer mutt has slept on and off my bed her entire life. There are phases when she's been kicked off and slept on s dog bed next to my bed (like when my partner and I first started living together) and she's always been chill with whatever. Now she prefers to hop on the bed for a snuggle at bedtime but she gets off on her own after about twenty minutes. It's not something we let her do every night, but most nights, and she knows she has to wait for permission. I don't really see a problem with having the baby in the bedroom and occasionally cosleeping in between feeds since she probably won't be on the bed anyway and is good about being told to get off. We're playing it by ear though so we'll see what works!
  • @TabulaRasa25 that is how I am feeling. We have two dog beds for them on the floor they just do not like to lay there. My pup that likes to lay with me has learned that when I tap him I need to get out of bed cause I cannot climb over him anymore like I used to so I wouldnt wake him too badly lol but sometimes he still plays like he doesnt wanna and rolls on belly
  • I have made the same decision about my 3 little pitbulls. I'm not kicking them out of their bed or acting like them being around the baby is bad. She will be in a Co sleeper next to my side of the bed and the dogs will carry on like normal!
  • @Imcissne pit bulls get such a bad reputation. They are actually called nanny dogs because of their "unparalleled love and devotion to children"  this article was really interesting as well https://www.alternet.org/civil-liberties/pitbulls-used-be-considered-perfect-nanny-dogs-children-until-media-turned-them
  • We have three 50lb dogs; a pitbull mix and two basset hounds. They sleep on and off in the bed with us, but mostly just come to snuggle in the mornings when they hear my husband and I restling as we wake up. We have a giant sectional and several dog beds in the apartment that they know are for them to use. We have a rock n play that we are going to keep bedside because I'm honestly terrified to cosleep since we have a queen and my husband and I are both restless sleepers and flop around a lot. I don't think we will have any issues with the dogs though, they seem to know their boundaries pretty well and cherish their sleep more than I do; so a crying baby will keep them away haha. I plan on buying another dog bed to keep in our bedroom just in case they do decide that they want to be near her.
  • Glad I came across this I love my dog & he sleeps with me and my fiancé every night !! I also will have our son sleep next to the bed. My dog is a pit bull but he is only a puppy even though he doesn't look like it. He get very sad if we tell him he can't sleep with us!
  • We have a beagle and a GSD. Both of them have slept in the bed since day 1, they will stay in the bed and baby girl gets a bassinet next to the bed. We only have a queen anyway so even if there weren't dogs there wouldn't be room.
