Baby out past bedtime

I put my little down (10wks) around 730ish every night. If we are out to dinner and we don't get home till after when she should be put down, will it throw her off of her schedule?

Re: Baby out past bedtime

  • I am SUCH a schedule/routine person, so I hate keeping my kids up past their bedtime.  I find that it does affect my baby's schedule for that night (maybe waking earlier/more often to feed), but not really for the next day.

  • It's funny before my lo was born I was a very scheduled person like everything down to the minute but now I'm more relaxed. I'm a big believer in not having DD on a strict schedule because then when we are out or having something going on she wouldn't adjust. We have a bed time routine but the time varies every night and she doesn't have a nap schedule she just sleeps when she is tired so in my experience it doesn't affect my lo.
  • Wait do you put an awake baby down for the night? Is that possible?? Mine would not be having any of that. Right now we put her down for bedtime when she's tired...
  • If really depends on your LO and how off schedule you're going. If it's half hour it likely won't make a huge difference. If it's a couple hours then you might notice a change. At this age a bedtime is often not set in stone and our babes are changing so much right now. As your LO gets older it will probably be harder to go off schedule as easily. Then you have to decide what is more important. If it's going out for dinner with friends it might not be worth it. If it's your sisters wedding it might be. Depends on what's important to you and how your LO responds to a change in their schedule. To each their own!

DD is tired and ready for bed around the same time every night, regardless of when she woke from her last nap.  Bedtime is around 7:30, but definitely can go earlier or later depending on how she slept at daycare.  She can be super awake and happy after the last feeding, but as soon as I swaddle her and start singing and rocking her next to her crib, her eyes start to close.
  • We usually put my LO down around 8. I've personally found the nights we are out (dinner, family events etc) and he goes to bed late are the times he sleeps through the night! Tired from too much fun I guess! I know that is not how most babies respond to being out late but you just might get lucky!
  • Will she sleep in a wrap or in her carseat while you're at dinner?  If so, just tuck her into it there, and let her start her night's sleep.

Ditto! We are traveling and visiting family for two weeks so we are out pretty much every night. DS usually gets sleepy around his bedtime wherever we are (around 8 pm), so we put him in the wrap or in his stroller to sleep while we socialize. Whenever we get home, I feed and change him and he's been going to sleep easily and then sleeping for a long time. He's become pretty good at sleeping wherever he is, and the constant stimulation during the day really tires him out.
