What's for lunch today?

Since we are a very food obsessed group, what's for lunch today ladies?

I'm going to my favorite Lebanese place to get a massive plate of Tabbouleh. I cannot wait.

OMG I had a Lebanese best friend growing up and his mom made us homemade tabbouleh for a snack all the time. I can't find anywhere that it tastes as good and fresh as when she made it for us. Now I'm craving tabbouleh in pita. Yummmmmmm
  • MaryR0715  :( That's awful! Are you still having a lot of nausea? I'm fine as long as I avoid anything sweet and stick to a lot of sour tastes. I can eat fruit that's more tart, and I put insane amounts of lemon juice on EVERYHTHING.

  • Emott13 I grew up in an area with tons of Lebanese restaurants and used to eat it all the time- this is the ONE place I've found in Chicago that makes it properly!

  • All I managed was some soup. So much nausea today. I feared I might puke twice already.
  • @karenin I am always always always sick. I can deal with it most days IM 17 weeks and Just waiting for it to get better
  • Flax toast with butter (so much butter), a fruit smoothie, and a Crunchie bar... gotta balance the healthy with the good stuff!

I'm thinking a turkey sandwich on whole grain bread with a strawberry, yogurt and granola parfait. Then I might top it off with a cupcake or an ice cream sandwich (or both). It's skinny cow, so it isn't that bad ;)

A lot healthier then my plan. Maybe I should step it up a notch.. Maybe a griled cheese and tomato soup.. Mmmm.
  • My grandma's left over stuffed shells--my favorite thing she makes!
  • So jealous of all of you ladies. For me it ended up being a PB&J and some leftover potato salad. Decent summer lunch, but definitely not the stuffed shells or tabbouleh the rest of y'all got.
  • I'm eating leftovers from dinner last night. Grilled chicken sausage/peppers/onions with a salad of tomato/mushrooms/spinach.
  • Turkey sandwich and grapes followed by frozen lemonade. I have been looking forward to my frozen lemonade since I woke up! Yummmm
  • Chicken caesar pita wrap. We are heading out of town on Wednesday for two weeks so trying to eat all the food in the fridge. Personally, I think takeout every day is way better.
  • So, I ate a third of a bag of potato chips. That's it. Haven't gained any weight so far, so I'm going to keep eating like I have been...
  • I had leftover pizza, but I'm still hungry. Trying to decide what else I want
  • Broccoli cheese soup! It's Paneras brand, from Sam's Club. My hubs went and stocked up for me before he left out of state for 12 days. I have been loving all my soups though!! Just wish it wasn't July and so hot!

You and a PP both said you were havifn Turkey sandwiches.... I was told by my OB office no lunch meat unless it's a toasted sandwich or I microwave my meat before putting it on a sandwich (yuck!!). So I'm just super curious if you weren't told you couldn't have lunch meat, if this was just something my OB office says? No judgemet at all, I'm just super jealous, because all I want is a turkey Tom from Jimmy Johns.
  • Veggie soup, honey mustard prezel sticks, and a peach.

  • Chicken-Bacon sub with lots of jalapeños and jalapeño chips... Thank you 2 trimester for letting me eat spicy things again!
  • Oh I sure hope I can eat spicy things again soon! I used to eat jalepenos on lots of stuff, and now I can't hardly look at them!

I wish I could remember what thread it was but we had a huge discussion about lunch meats and sandwiches... Maybe @Snoopylovesbelle or @vvitchhazel or @KaraEpp16 can remember? Most people here eat sandwiches anyway... Lots of us talked about Jommy johns! Yum!
  • I had leftover Mac n cheese with burnt ends brisket and cornbread from my fav BBQ place! Soooooo good and now I need a nap, lol.
  • MommaB16  most OBs say that but the concern is listeria, and most listeria outbreaks in recent years have been from other sources that pregnant women are not warned away from (veggies etc.). My OB has said that lunch meat at most restaurants is usually ok b/c the turnover is so fast so meat is not sitting out. If it's heated, like at a Potbellys, the risk is very low also. I think it's a personal choice like many foods, and many women here (myself included) eat lunch meat during pregnancy. I recommend reading up on listeria if you want to make choices about this stuff. GL!

  • I eat deli meats on sandwiches. Some women like to make sure they heat the meat up before hand. My midwife told me Hillshire Farms or other prepackaged sandwich meats were a safe option. I also heard that Dietz & Watson likes to make sure they have zero nitrates.

Listeria is something that can contaminate a lot of different foods, not just lunch meats.
  • I had a grazing lunch.... A price of soprasetta, a Greek lime yogurt, an apple, then a bit later I had a rice cake with Nutella, and a crazy bread from DH's little ceasar order.

What @karaepp16 said. I know about the so called "forbidden foods" during pregnancy. There are times that I heat it up, other times I eat it cold. It just depends on my mood.  I make sure my deli meat are from a reputable company. You have a bigger chance of catching listeria from contaminated fruits and veggies than from lunch meat.

  • Spaghetti with meatballs, garlic bread, side salad with EXTRA ranch and tomatoes, and you're-damn-right I had a large Pepsi! Seriously though, I ate with a friend and she commented on my Pepsi.  Don't tell me how to live my life!

People throw around the stat that you have a greater chance of catching listeria from contaminated fruits and veggies than deli meats and I wonder where exactly you getting that stat from.  Do you have a study/somewhere you read that or are you just assuming that based on what foods the most recent listeria outbreaks have been from?

Based on that, I would argue your logic is flawed, and fruit and vegetable listeria outbreaks may just be easier to track back to a supplier, while one deli meat counter is harder to triangulate a source, as they say in this article.

I also read Emily Oster's book and the chapter on deli meat and listeria and examined the studies, and I see the point in the odds being in your favor numbers wise.  However, I would argue that when the risk is miscarriage and stillbirth, there is reason to avoid those foods beyond those numbers. The whole idea of pregnancy is that you stay informed, and use that information to do the best you can in the context of what works in your life.  Make whatever decisions you will, but I think there is a good reason some doctors offices continue to advise against deli meats during pregnancy.

  • Food is so disgusting to me these days, that my doc told me to just eat anything that I can get down. (I've weighed less and less at each apt.) SO lately, I've been eating tons of cheeseburgers!! Today my lunch was a double cheeseburger from McDonalds, with fries...

Turkey Tom is delicious!!!! My ob said he isn't concerned about lunch meat. Too much fish, which I don't eat so I don't remember the name, caffeine and alcohol are his concerns. I eat turkey rolls right from the fridge dipped in ranch. So yum!

  • My doc and I had a conversion about the listeria thing today. The meat thing is mostly a cross contamination thing because they tend to be processed at the same places. Listeria is a bacteria that grows in the ground and therefore attaches to vegetables (hence the reason vegetables are a more risky source) and so they tell you to wash all fruits and vegetables and heat up lunch meat.
  • Home-made vegetarian lasagna made by my partner yesterday...so in love with him because of this, lol!
  • @willashbaby Burnt ends! My FIL does BBQ contests and he makes the BEST! I live for them!

I had a steak burrito from Moe's! It was grrrrrrrreat!

I'm not going to argue about statistics. We live in a world of misinformation due to easy information sharing (thanks, internet!). There are plenty of sources that seem credible but in reality they are not.

I was just passing along the information I got and the experiences I've had/heard about. I think some clinics are more strict and some are a little more lenient. I'm not going to tell anyone to go against what their OB has said, ever.
I was told that everything on the typical "no-no" list is fine in moderation. You said that the whole idea of pregnancy is that you stay informed and to use the information in a way that works best for you. In my post, I gave information - I received from my provider - regarding certain types of meat that are recommended due to the fact that there are no nitrates. I also provided information about pre packed meats because the chances of them being contaminated is a lot less than the meats you get at the deli counter. Information and options!

Well, what works best for me in my pregnancy is eating a sandwich once a week if or when I have the urge.

    Edit: typos
  • @karaepp16 I totally agree with your post above and think it's every woman's right to make their own (informed) decisions in a pregnancy. And I support you providing information re: nitrates, heating, prepackaging (all which I agree with).  I think that's all legitimate good advice.
FWIW, I was responding moreso to the information I keep hearing on this board that it's more likely found in fruits and veggies, which I think may be an assumption and not a fact, which is what I was questioning.
