Stretch marks...

I was just wondering what people methods are on dealing with stretch marks. What has helped prevent them and how you have improved existing marks. I personally have tried a few different creams and used baby oil but not consistently. And have so far got stretch marks on my hips and one where my belly piercing used to be. (however the stretch marks on my boobs have got a lot worse) so I though maybe anyone else would like to share their thoughts

Re: Stretch marks...

  • I swear I went to bed one night with just a couple small stretch marks and woke up with a whole bunch of them. I have them on my boobs, butt, thighs, hips, and the outside of my knees. I went to our local pharmacy and bought every cream labelled for stretch marks and I am giving them a try.

  • I used palmers cocoa butter formula for stretch marks. I started using almost immediately after I learned I was pregnant. I have old marks from puberty but I do not have any new ones and I'm almost 38 wks. Not sure it was the cream or just luck! Lol
  • I have heard good things about the Palmer cocoa butter.. I know sometimes they can't be prevented just seeing people thoughts on them. I had lots from puberty too mainly on my boobs but now have them on my hips and inside thighs. I too swear I got them overnight and woke up with them the next day. My sister has just found out she is pregnant so thought I would find out the best cream for her as it's too late for me :)
  • Bio oil is amazing! I use it on my stomach and have only gotten one stretch mark on my belly button piercing. My boobs have HORRIBLE stretch marks as I've gone up 3 cup sizes, and it's really helped them. You're supposed to use it twice a day but I only use it about once a week if I'm lucky because I forget about it, and even with just that the stretch marks on my boobs have close to vanished.

Careful. Bio Oil contains Retinyl Palmitate, which is a Catagory X pregnancy risk. If you want to take that risk, that's cool but make sure you warn others that it isn't considered safe for use during pregnancy.

To answer the question, coconut oil is nice for hydrating the skin during pregnancy. But, like others have said, stretch marks are mostly genetic.

Like pp said, there isn't really anything you can do to prevent them. I have found that mine naturally lighten a lot after losing the baby weight, so I try not to worry about them. Especially considering I can't prevent them. Also, oils you can put on scars seemed to have helped lighten a lot of my friends.

Wow I totally didn't know that about bio oil, I used it my whole last pregnancy, but it didn't prevent any stretch marks anyways. Thanks for the info.
  • I use Bio Oil as well and if it was not safe for use during pregnancy I don't think it would have "during pregnancy" directions printed on the bottle. The amount of Vitamin A (Retinyl Palmitate) in the product is very little and you aren't ingesting it.

Exactly, if it wasn't safe there wouldn't be instructions on it telling you how often to use it during pregnancy
  • Nothing is going to prevent them, but cocoa butter really helps. I have a couple but they have all come in very light and clear. Nothing is going to work if you don't do it consistently though.
  • I have plenty of stretch marks, After having my second child they pretty much doubled. They used to bother me and made me very self conscious but after buying and trying absolutely everything I just learned to love them! At the end of the day I shows that your body went through an amazing journey and produced something so beautiful. Your body is a work of art when it's embellished in stretch marks. They're your tiger stripes, own them xx
