Yea good point re: car seats And I never knew that about the chewing on cribs thing- that's something to really consider - thanks! I'm going to search out alternatives too and maybe find something in a similar style but cheaper (hopefully!)

I agree you'll want a place to sleep and a bouncing/vibrating seat or swing. We got a lot of use out of both, actually, and our RnP and our crib. He just went through phases where the swing was the only thing that put him to sleep, or only the vibrating seat did the trick. Babies are fickle. I have also hear a lot of negative things about that mamaroo thing...it's sooo expensive but it moves really slowly and everyone I know who has one prefers a regular swing. We bought one that converts from a swing to a vibrating seat and I'm super excited about it!
Which one did you get?
It's been in our garage so I'm not sure if it's the same color as this one but it's this (link). You can remove the seat of the swing to make it a bouncer seat. And it plugs into the wall, which the swing we borrowed to use for DS didn't and we always found it so annoying to replace the batteries!

This is the one my friend is giving me! My other kids hated swings so we may not every use it. But it looks nice and I know it's close to $200 which is on the pricey side for a swing.
We loved the RnP! I was disappointed when mine grew out of it.
I was tempted to buy an expensive crib with my first. They look so great in the pictures, but I'm so glad I didn't. It would have been a huge waste of money. Plus, I would feel incredibly guilty if my mom spent that much on something for me. That's just me though.
@g8trkim: Yes they cost a lot brand new!! I'm so lucky we snagged one on a BST group for $60 in awesome condition. I wouldn't have splurged for it otherwise.
We have a second hand crib that we used for DS and are re-using this time. I had to do some touch up painting on the bite marks when it was given to us and luckily DS didn't chew on it. It is so not worth getting an expensive crib. We had a pack'n'play in our room (with the detachable bassinet feature) and used it so much throughout the next two and a half years that it eventually just broke. I plan to do the same thing again this time and have already registered for another PnP.
inomniaparatus I'm chiming in a bit late. We had about 1000 sq feet in downtown DC when we had DD. So we severely limited what we purchased. I didn't have a crib. We used the pack and play system that goes from a bassinet to the medium stage thing (where they can't roll out of bed) to the regular crib like thing. I found that after the fact I wish I had purchased a crib. They might not use it forever, but I'd go with something that makes you happy. If the RH one converts to a toddler bed, I'd say yes in a heartbeat. That being said, if you breastfeed having a bassinet that has easy access to baby at 2am...it's really nice. We ended up co-sleeping around 4 (?) months. She had ALOT or problems sleeping (she is only now reliably sleeping through the night...most of the time...at 2.5 yrs old). So honestly, anything I could do to sleep...I did it. As to a crib, I'm going to do it for baby #2. Additional comment on the crib...I'd check the finish. In addition to chewing some kids will get creative with their diapers when bored. We'll just say we had a painter...it was not pretty. So make sure it cleans easily and that the finish is nontoxic would be my last comment on the crib. I'm a bit of a non-toxic person...alot of stuff isn't.
I also wanted to comment on the Momaroo, rock n play, and any angled baby holding system. Some kids have a lot problems with gas, indigestion and upset stomach etc etc. Our little rocker thingy had a vibrating mechanism that simply helped. That thing was perhaps one of the most valuable purchases we had. That and it was really nice to put the baby in that while I showered. I would put her in the rocker thingy in the bathroom while I showered (we had glass doors to the shower). It was kind of scary to me to leave her in another room while I showered (and DH wasn't home).
