Restless legs anyone else??

i can't nap, or lay down to sleep at night without my legs randomly twitching. I'm 30 weeks today, and I am only allowed to take unisom as a sleep aid, or Benadryl. It's awful! Is anyone else suffering and maybe have a tip or two of other things to try? I don't want to be sleep deprived BEFORE my baby gets here :'-(

  • I'm 27 weeks and my legs just started twitching and jerking. It's so freaking annoying!!

On occasion! When I'm trying to sleep and it's bugging me I'll rest my calves on a hot water bottle. I find it I burn them enough, it takes my mind off it long enough for me to fall asleep :)
  • I have it. I had it with my last too. My routine: no eating or drinking after seven pm, take calcium pills then a hot tubby, try not to watch TV or go on comp before bed. It seems to help. Also if I have a bit in my bladder my legs do not relax. I swear its connected! I don't use sleep aids.

  • EVERY FRIGGIN DAY!!! Only the left one. So frustrating!!
  • Yes. It's awful. Sometimes stretches help, but the only thing that gets rid of it completely is a husband massage, so I second that. My husband now simply considers me begging for a meat tenderizing like leg massage (it seriously has to border on painful to work) and then him obliging to be part of his before bed routine. The man is working his way to sainthood.
  • Natural calm may help. They make one specifically for pregnancy.
  • Yes. It blows. It runs in my family and is always worse during pregnancy. I find that it gets worse if I'm trying to sleep with the tv on.

What works for me: no noise/distractions, pillow between my legs, clear mind and really focusing on sleep instead of the feeling in my legs. Also chamomile tea helps too.

  • Yes I have it and have had it for a while now. Also had it with dd1. Like pp's have said a hot bath seems to help me as well as stretching and massage.
  • Try taking magnesium. It's safe during pregnancy and helps with RLS - indulge in leg massages if possible and avoid caffeine as it can make it worse. Hope this helps...I know how annoying it can feel!
  • I've had restless legs for around the last two or three months! It goes up an down in terms of degree but I am not too good about associating what is different when it isn't as bad, in terms of prevention. I think they might be less twitchy at night when I did a walk that evening. Once I do have them twitching, stretching them seems to help.
  • Me too!! Every night! I heard tonic water helps, but I don't know can we take that? Is there anything in tonic water that could be harmful? Is it just like seltzer water?
  • It's AWFUL!! I'm so sorry for everyone else going through it too! I'm going to the Dr today and will ask about it, I'll let you guys know if he says anything new
  • Yes! Just started this week but its my hands too.  How do people live like this and still sleep and work?!  Stretching and self massage since hubby is out of town this week :(

There is quinine in tonic water and we can't have that
  • I just heard the tonic water suggestion last night, actually! Though that person recommended it for my leg cramps. Stupid quinine.

I had RLS around 25-27 weeks and I found the more active I was walking, running, whatever, it eased it up when I did try to lay down. I also felt like while I was on the couch I'd have to "pedal" in the air to just try and satisfy that feeling or needing to move. Ugh. Here's hoping it doesn't return! That plus leg cramps? No thanks.
  • I have been diagnosed with restless leg syndrome since I was a kid and, weirdly, my legs have gotten much better since being pregnant. I fully expect my RLS to come back any day now lol. I find it helps me to sleep with heat on my legs. I know that's probably not great advice, especially if it's hot, hot, hot where you are (it's been 100+ in Oregon this past few days), but heat helps, it really does! Sleep aids DO NOT HELP the legs, trust me; they might start to knock you out, but if your legs start twitching, you'll just end up groggy. I will often tuck a heating pad (that has an automatic shut off) between or under my legs on my worst nights and it soothes them enough for me to go to sleep. Or a warm bath right before bed (with some nice aromatherapy bubble bath) along with some leg stretches.
  • Sorry guys, been at work constantly. My Dr said that there isn't much I can do but to try taking an extra calcium supplement, seems to be helping at least some
