refusing bottle

I'm not sure if this has been a topic yet, but my breastfed lo has recently began refusing a bottle. We first introduced a bottle at 4 weeks and she took it just fine and I was able to leave and have the hubby give her a bottle. Now at 9 weeks, she's refusing all types of bottles. She will gnaw and it and play with the nipple with her tongue and then get mad and start screaming. I thought maybe she would get hungry enough and eventually take it but that doesn't seem to work. I am going back to work in 2 weeks and she will be at daycare for 10+hours at a time. Does anybody have experience with this or any tips?

Re: refusing bottle

  • Mine just did this exact same thing. I stopped giving her so many bottle choices and stuck to one. Kiinde fast flow, because it was most like her pacifier. I like that one because you can pump right into the bag and it doesn't create a vacuum in the bottle when she eats & less bubbles.

I waited until she was pretty hungry and took it away every time she started playing with it. We used the bottle all day yesterday.

She also refuses it if it's not very warm. She likes it a little warmer than body temp.

    Good luck!

  • What flow nipples are you using? If you have a fast letdown, then too slow of a nipple may not be fast enough for her? She may not be used to having to work for it!

I use the same one but also a Tommie tippie and an Avent just because I have them and use those for expressed milk that is refrigerated.

What I have found is that when I am there she will only take a bottle from me but takes it no problem. If I am not there she refuses until she is really hungry sometimes going five hrs between eating. She prefers milk that has only been heated once whether it was frozen or refrigerated.

  • Thank you ! I will try some of these things out
    Hopefully something will work!
  • I've also found that distraction helps. My LO refused the bottle at first so we walk around with her outside. When she's nice and distracted and looking at leaves in the trees, she'll start sucking. And once she's started, usually she'll continue with less fight.
  • I had the exact same issue. I just tried a different bottle. The Mam ones worked because they are the same shape and texture as her soothers.
  • We're having the same issue . She ten weeks and has been refusing since six weeks. I'm exhausted. I can't do anything. Especially in the evening when she cluster feeds.
  • I'm in the same situation, I have no idea what to do. I tried when she's really hungry and she screams. I tried when she not so hungry and she just gnaws on it and then screams. I have no idea what to do

Idk why I thought it was just my LO doing this lol. So far he seems to be taking the Lansinoh mOmma bottle but it's still a battle in the beginning of the feeding. I just wish they had the bottle in a gender neutral color...it has a purple collar.

My LO does worse the more hungry. I started BFing a little then taking her off and giving the bottle leaving her in roughly the same position. Now she will take it fine. A lot of people have someone else give the bottle and the female stays far away but im not sure if it works I never tested it
