Night Pump EBF Mamas

I will be going back to work next week and I'm trying to figure out how not to be exhausted - ha! My LO goes to bed by 10pm and usually sleeps straight through until 4-5am. I typically wake up to pump at 2:30 or 3:30am to keep my supply up and not get to engorged and then wake up to feed her on demand. If I skip the night pump, will it mess with my supply? Am I crazy to wake up to pump? Help! I'm so exhausted every morning. I can't imagine going to work!

Re: Night Pump EBF Mamas

  • I went back to work Monday and dropped my night pump and my supply took a dive. So if you can I would still do it until you have a large frezzer stash built up.

How far along postpartum are you? I used to pump at 9:30pm, 2:30, and 6pm. I shifted it to 11pm, 5am, and 7am. I saw an increase in supply.
  • @idmw I'm 13 weeks postpartum.
  • I have to wake up around two am and pump too. Even though my lo sleeps through the night now.
  • My lo sleeps till between 4:30 and 6 am so I sleep that time with her. After I feed her, I pump the opposite side because I just can't take it anymore. Im already back to work but my supply hasn't dropped. I think my body is getting used to waiting that long now. I'm still engorged but its not as terrible as it was when she started sleeping longer.
  • @tvgirl102 thanks for the response! Do you pump right before bed? If so, what time?
  • I stopped pumping at night then my supply dropped way down then stopped completely. We became EFF within 2 weeks. Everyone is different so I'm not saying you will but that's my story. Good luck!!
  • I've been feeding on demand so my nights have been gradually getting longer, I never pumped at night. I can go about 8 hours at night before I'm waking baby up to eat. Maybe do it gradually?
  • After she feeds last for the night, usually around 10, I pump the opposite side she eats from (she block feeds)
That's just her routine, to go to bed around 10:30
    :)
  • I'm EPing, and now that DS sleeps through the night, I don't pump in the middle of the night, and I haven't seen my supply drop at all.  I make up for it with other pumps throughout the day.  For the first few nights I got really engorged, but then my body adjusted, and I'm fine to go all night.
  • I EP and did the moving my last pump to 11pm trick and it helped a lot- I still usually wake up to pump around 3-4am (my body naturally wakes me up when I get really engorged) but I can go until 7 or 8 if I'm really tired (and baby doesn't wake up) and I've noticed my supply is ok when I do this.
  • I couldn't imagine waking up when dd is asleep just to pump! Good for you!

But i read that your supply adjusts, so if your lo doesn't feed at certain hours everyday your production slows down during that time and picks up at feeding times, i think you will be engorged for a few days though so maybe start pumping half the amount and then stop?
