Good toys for babies?

So I have enough clothes to get by, and I still need big items like crib, car seat etc, but my baby doesn't have any toys. Any recommendations as far as teething toys, developmental toys and just plain old things baby would enjoy? Ill get her some things for Xmas :)

  • When my son was around 3-4 months old, he loved anything that he could grasp and put in his mouth. So, basically any teething toy. He had this one toy which was a star shape, terry cloth on the outside, crinkle material on the inside, with different textured plastic at each "point." The crinkling fascinated him.

Sophie the Giraffe is also a great teething toy, and if the price seems too much, I've seen less expensive versions at Target or Walmart

Also, tactile books like Pat the Bunny, or cloth books with crinkly pages.

Really babies that age don't need much for toys, but I understand wanting to get some Christmas gifts. So any kind of simple, tactile toy would do. No need for anything pricey. Maybe set up an Amazon list with some ideas? I'm sure the grandparents will want to buy things for baby's first XMas as well.

@Cupcakesandquilts, my son is 2 and his favorite "toy" is any sock he finds lying around, which he likes to twirl and call it a helicopter. And this kiddo has no shortage of actual toys given to him by his grandparents!

  • I found this list of "smart" toys per age:
    https://incredibleinfant.com/sweet-stuff/baby-toys-2014/

Obviously newborns don't play with much, but I did get him or her a play gym, one of those sensory toys that you hang on the stroller/car seat, the NogginStick and an OBall. (And Sophie the Giraffe, not on the list).
  • For Christmas, we're going to get a few things that I think are too expensive to spend regular money (non-gift money) on.
Target.com has these boo-boo bunnies that you put in the freezer. They come in 2-packs for $20. It's super expensive for a little ice cube with a bunny wrap, but one of the bunnies in the yellow set looks just like the one that I had as a child (he STILL lives in my mom's freezer). Come to find out, DH had the same exact one as a child, too. So that's on my baby-Christmas-list.
We also decided to get him a play gym and a personalized ornament.

@VioletandRose thank you for the link :) To everyone else, I'm not planning on going crazy but I do want some developmental toys and chew toys for Xmas and I don't think there is anything wrong with that at all, Xmas or not. But thank you for your comments.

  • @NocturnalPandie are you soliciting your stuff in every possible forum in every possible month?
  • I have been pinning ideas on Pinterest for things for baby. My husband thinks I'm crazy. I feel like the earlier you start with your baby the better and why not start with toys that will help them develop and learn along the way.
  • @KLopez33, that looks to be the case. I've been reporting each one as spam. Hopefully they go away. SO ANNOYING. Even if I wanted your Etsy art, there's not a chance I'd click on it now just on principle. Go away.
  • Peekaboo Forest by Lamaze is the SHIT.  You're welcome.
  • Lol @Nukke thanks lady. Thanks everyone else :)@KLopez33 that's exactly how I feel. I honesty know I could just go get any toys I like but I really want something good for development which is why I asked hoping for some pointers :)

  • Another mom whose kids have LOVED Sophie the giraffe! If you you are having a shower I would definetly add to your registry bc they are like $25-30. Mine have also really liked oballs with rattles in them, soft stuffed animals that play music, any teethers you freeze but still stay squishy not the ones filled with water.

@Knottie16832459 I'm pretty sure nobody needs to be told to interact with their child. This is about toys for Christmas and suggestions for those toys. I'm a book reader myself and my baby already has a small library in her room. I am not looking for developmental help However I am going to buy her a few toys period & Im going to make sure they are good developmental toys. I'm not sure where you gathered that I was looking for toys or electronics to do the fundamental work, but I have been trying to have this baby for almost 10 years and did 4 IVF cycles out of pocket to conceive her. The last thing I will be doing is passing off the joys of helping her development to an object. But thanks for your opinion anyways! Just curious, does your child not have a single toy? More power to you if that's the case, but I personally do want to get my baby a few things and I don't see it as a problem.

  • Books! :) and try not to get anything with batteries. Those are for gifts for children annoying parents. Lol nothing is worse than a rogue toy making noise all night.

    No, I'm sorry. I'm a grinch, admittedly. I don't do toys.

Just kidding. I haven't really given it much thought, but I do have a little Peter Rabbit stuffed bunny + teething ring. They came with a collection of Beatrix Potter books that DH bought, which I thought was cool.

I LOVE the Peter Rabbit and Benjamin Button books! I still have mine from when I was a child and they are in excellent condition. I'm so excited to read to my baby. I hope she grows to be a book lover like myself. I don't have a television and don't plan on buying one so I hope that turns out to be the case.

Same here. Beatrix Potter was my favorite growing up, and still is. I love the illustrations. :)

  • Ahh yes I love books. One of my baby showers has a book theme, I can't wait to read to him. reading is awesome.
  • Besides tethers, nesting cups are a good baby toy. So far I have gotten those, Sophie, a crinkle rattle, and a wooden teether with a lovie attached. A shape sorter is a good toy too.

Me too.! My whole house is book shelfs. I am the type of aunt that gives books and educational gifts for holidays and birthdays. The kids in my immediate family get 2-5 Xmas gifts total from everyone and they are so grateful <3 When looking in my nursery I noticed my baby only has books and not a single toy lol. That's why when I read the comments about "reliance on expensive toys" and the "ultimate development" I was like wtf. Asking about teething toys and developmental toys means I'm going to overlook my part in her development I guess. Due to my husbands job, we will be living in the outback of Australia and the bush of African countries and my daughter will be playing with kids that don't even know what tv is, have never seen a camera, have never tasted candy etc for the first 5/6 years of her life. A few toys will not mean she is neglected.

And you said you were specifically looking for toys that helped with development, so I stated how I thought any interaction could help with development (so as long as you do that, imo, you're doing great with development).

Sigh. Ok. PP was definitely not trying to tell you or anyone how to interact with their child. She's simply stating her opinion and what she plans to do with her own. I don't think there's a need to get so defensive.
Thank you, Mariah. My comment was no indication on whether or not I thought you needed to be told, in fact I literally said its a "duh!" kind of comment to imply that it didn't need to be said. My comment was to say that if you cover those fundamental points, then any toy is a good toy, even the water bottle that I commented on.

If you already knew it didn't need to be said, then why did you say it? I have probably had outright disagreements with like 4 or 5 people in the 8 years I have been on the bump, and I found your comment extremely offensive and rude. Unless it's a case of obvious abuse, abandonment or neglect who are you to criticize choices any parent makes? If a parent wants to spend their money on expensive gadgets that's their choice. You said you will be a working mom, guess what? I'm not. I'm pretty sure my kid will have interests in things other than looking at my face 24/7. The topic of this thread is pretty straight forward and you contributed nothing but a condescending and judemental comment. If I wanted opinions on what fundamental points need to be covered and how to do that, I would have asked for that in my original post. We are not children ourselves here and a lot of these women have children already. It's common sense to interact with your child regularly. Answer me this; does your child not have a single toy? Oh wait, I believe you're a first time mom as well. I'm glad you are here to enlighten us all with your superior knowledge about child rearing.

  • @przemosbabe Bless your heart, I'm so sorry I came off that way to you. First time bio mom, but not my first child, assumption is never a flattering color on someone. I do wish you the best in your search for help from others on this thread and only meant to help reassure you that you already had the best tools for your baby.

@Knottie16832459 I think you were the one who was being presumptuous. I'm pretty sure I saw you say in another thread that you have helped care for many children for years and other things that implied that this is the first child you will be raising with your fiancé. I hate to break it to you but being a baby sitter for others isn't the same as having a child of your own to raise, day in and day out 24/7. I have much experience with children too. I have worked with children for 14 years, most of which live in impoverished countries with parents making less than a dollar a day to feed a family of 4 or more, or children who have lost both their parents to disease and cannot go to school because they need to work to care for their siblings. I am the last person that needs to be lectured about " reliance on expensive toys and new trends" and I am sure no other moms here that have actually raised children need to be either. I don't know about toys, because I never buy toys. As I said I am the aunt/friend that always gives books and educational gifts but you presumed differently. I already know I am the best thing for my baby. Had I been unsure about my ability to be an adequate parent I would not have paid for 4 rounds of IVF. Fortunately for me many ladies here have made awesome recommendations and that's enough so I don't really need to "search" any longer. Good day to you.

  • Again, still not my first child. All of the above is true, and there are more pieces of my life I have not gone into detail about. In the words of Fez, no! I say good day to you! As I continue my day with more of a sense of humor than the tone of conversation.

Clearly you just don't get it. But if you come back im just going to let you have the last word. Thank you for turning a thread about toys into something it didn't need to be.

@leighann1 do you have any ideas to contribute or are you here to stir drama that's already been ended?
