OP, look up the DisneyLand issues that just happened this year. I think it was around 60 or so kids were infected with a preventable disease all because of people choosing to not vaccinate their kid. Many of those infected were due to the kids being too young to be vaccinated.

Assumptions. I can't figure out why you are assuming that I have zero respect for the immunocompromised population. I have Multiple Sclerosis. Why are you assuming this about me? I don't get it. I am insanely passionate about vaccines, so I do feel the need to say something. But I am going to try to keep this as short and sweet as my conscience will allow, because I could literally go on for days.

There is absolutely, positively NO scientifically backed reason what-so-ever to delaying vaccines. Vaccines have been proven time and time again to be safe and the current vaccination schedule recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics is based on hard scientific evidence. Vaccines are recommended when they are recommended not only to provide protection when it is needed, but also to ensure that vaccines are given when the body is able to build the appropriate immune response to them (for example, we don't give a newborn baby all of their vaccines right away because they do not mount the appropriate response to them when they are that small, NOT because it would hurt them/be unsafe for them to receive them).

Delaying vaccines ONLY leaves your children susceptible to diseases longer. And that, is dangerous. Especially given that many of the vaccine preventable diseases are MORE dangerous when a child is younger (i.e. pertussis, varicella, etc.).

There are plenty of people who have contracted certain vaccine preventable disease and have survived and gone on to not have serious complications. HOWEVER, there are many that do not. I cannot understand why anyone would ever take the chance. Could your child get the measles and be fine? Yes. Could they get the measles and die of pneumonia? Yes. Could they get the measles, survive, and then get subacute sclerosing panencephalitis years later and die? Yes.

Not to mention that maybe your child gets the measles or varicella and does fine, but what about their classmate who has leukemia that is immunocompromised? Before your kid even knows they have the measles, they have spread it to that child, and now that child dies because of a decision that someone else's parent made for them.

Herd immunity is INSANELY important and we take vaccines for granted because we have not seen many of these diseases in our lifetime. A little boy in Spain died of diphtheria recently. DIPHTHERIA! That is insane and completely preventable. They had to have the antitoxin flown in from Russia because they haven't seen diphtheria in Spain in almost 30 years. And despite that, they couldn't save him.

How many babies do we need to see die of pertussis before we realize how fortunate we are to have access to vaccines? How many measles outbreaks? Do children need to start contracting polio and becoming paralyzed for something to change?

I mean this in the nicest way possible, herd immunity is fairly common knowledge. It's hard to believe someone who works in health care, and from what info you have given interacts with patients besides at some sort of front desk wouldn't know what herd immunity is.

I don't understand all of the uproar. I have not said anything rude to anyone so how have I created drama?

I have MS and Colitis so I know all about having a compromised immune system. I thought I was clear that I was trying to learn about a controversial topic, but apparently I wasn't clear enough.

I have never given vaccines much thought since I cannot get them myself and I've only recently started thinking about it since I am new to TTC. I thought women here would understand that and be respectful about my willingness and open mind to learn about something.

I don't want any trouble. Sorry I ever answered the questionnaire. Sorry that I upset so many people.

This was a multi-hour thread with a ton of people providing LOTS of good information to her (because she "doesn't know anything about this topic" and is clearly too damn lazy to Google this shit for herself) and her simply responding that people are making assumptions. So predictable.

I call BS. She's one of those who gets backed into her hole and can't get out, and her only defense mechanism is to pretend like everyone else is the problem, like she's the "calm, honest one here trying to have an adult conversation".

If you were so truly concerned and interested about this topic, you would have spent the last couple hours Googling it like everyone had to do FOR YOU instead of engaging in a ridiculous, defensive AW thread here. Hell, if you wanted your daily dose of drama so terribly, you could have visited ANY of the BMBs because this is a hot topic on every month!

Man, I only come back to see the drama on TTGP and it seems that 99% of it involves you. You should just stop. I'm being absolutely serious when I say this, but you are completely embarrassing yourself and it sounds like you don't realize it. I hope you do now.

I'll throw in my 2 cents. 1- the "doctor" that claimed vaccinations cause autism was disproven, had his medical liscense revoked, and went to jail for that nonsense. It has only been "proven" once by said doctor, but disproven a hundred times over. 2. I'm a special Ed teacher. I have a student in my class who has autism and, shocker, is unvaccinated. Hmmmm. 3. If an outbreak occurs at a school of an infectious disease that has a vaccine, all unvaccinated students must stay home from school for 21 days from the last confirmed case. 4. My students and many others are medically fragile and therefore are on very delayed shot schedules. Every time an unvaccinated kid gets the measles or another illness, my students must also stay home for 21 days. How fair is that to my kiddos? They have to miss valuable school time because some parent read some very shitty and incurred research? Bull. 5. Vaccination only works if it's done in the collective. Vaccinations are still working in the greater sense because the majority of people continue to get the vaccines. The more people that joint this stupid no vaccine band wagon, the more people will be at risk and since eradicated illness will come back and come back big.

Long story short... Read all the research. Not just the "articles" that fall in your side of the argument.

I think the biggest issue people took with your comments is that you did not even know the basics....herd immunity, HIPAA practices, vaccination scheduling, etc. I understand that you have not investigated this topic very much, if any, BUT almost everyone that I know in healthcare field at least knows the basics because it is so critical to our profession. Communicable diseases and public health issues are always hot topics in our field, and ones that we get tons of training over....I think we're all just a bit confused. Not doubting your in the healthcare setting at all, but if you are, maybe it's time to delve into this topic. It is actually quite interesting...

Also, I did post some links and good information on page 2 of this thread. It got a little buried.

I also have a compromise immune system, which is why I learn as much about vaccines and to educate myself about whats going on wight he debate. Because people, like yourself, and others who are waiting to vaccine their kids/ won't at all put the general public at risk. Which is why to me, not being inform already is mind boggling since you are immune compromised. It is ESPECIALLY important for you that people get their kids vaccinated. More so since you work in the health care system.

I am a Certified Nurse Assistant. I just graduated training at the Red Cross in January so I am very new to healthcare. We never learned anything about vaccines and I've never learned anything about them in school prior to that. I don't know why I never learned anything about vaccines except that I've never done the research. Yes, that's my fault but certainly not a deal breaker. I am learning about it now. It's no different from my just having learned about temping. Also, I'm not from California.

Look guys, I just thought I would follow in my Mom's footsteps but it wasn't set in stone. I didn't even know it was an issue until the first poster said something about it. I don't even have an argument about it. I'm really trying here to explain myself and to see through my hurt emotions (brush them off). If that means I'm embarrassing myself, then so be it if it helps you to understand who I am.

I've received a lot of helpful information here. Thank you.
