I have nothing against people who have done their research and decided not to vaccinate. I have simply decided not to take that path, although I agree the vaccines could do without many of the additives. Which is why we have chosen a delayed vaccine schedule with no hep B at birth and as many single vaccines given as possible. In the case of a reaction I feel this will help isolate the cause. For us we have decided the risks are worth the benefits. To each their own and I hope people do what they feel is best for their families, as long as research is done and the decision is looked at from both sides.
@MacMommy88 Yes, preventable diseases are less common in developed countries. While poor sanitation and nutrition do contribute to disease prevalence, the greatest cause of this is a lack of access to vaccinations. I have been part of outreach efforts in undeveloped nations and it is heartbreaking to see children sick and dying because their parents could not afford a $1 vaccine.
Reading on the internet does not constitute research. Vaccines are created and evaluated for safety by scientists that are experts in their fields. I have taken microbiology, pathophysiology, and pharmacology at a major university and I recognize that my understanding of diseases and medicines is still negligible in comparison to the knowledge of these individuals that have doctoral degrees. I trust their judgement much more than that of someone making a documentary or an irate parent that is desperately looking for any possible correlation for their child's cognitive disorder. These doctors don't just add in components for funsies- they serve a specific function, such as maintaining the vaccine's effectiveness until it can be given to a patient. We have come a long way since Jenner injecting people with cowpox scabs and I think that's a good thing.
Your argument about Hep B for newborns makes sense, but what point do have them get the vaccination? "Hey sweetie, let me know before you become sexually active so we can give you a hep B vaccine!" While the diagnosis of cognitive, social, and emotional disorders has risen in recent years, it can be attributed to the fact that we largely don't have to worry about preventable deadly diseases and the medical community can focus on these less understood disorders. Also, anyone that still thinks that autism is in any way linked to
vaccines has not looked at the legitimate scientific research that has
been done since Wakefield's fraudulent article. See adorable infographic
Again, it goes back to herd immunity. As we have recently seen in communities where there are higher percentages of people that are antivaccination, there will be dangerous outbreaks of preventable diseases like pertussis and measles. It's tragic if your own child becomes miserably sick or dies because of your decision not to vaccinate. It's infuriating when your choice puts others at risk.

@macmommy88 I actually know of someone who got hep b FROM an unvaccinated (ETA I think? admit not totally sure) toddler. I work in a daycare and a child scraped her leg. The woman working with her forgot to put a glove on before cleaning the scrape (she didn't know the child was positive for hep b). She had a tiny cut on her finger. She's been in and out of the hospital since.
Its not being uneducated that causes people to choose not to vaccinate its research. Some people chose to vaccinate because its all they know and they have been told all their life that its what is protecting us when really the decline of all major disease follows economic/industrial upswing there cleanliness and food were more plentiful.
and in the past 25 years the vaccine schedule has gone from an average of 13 to 36+ vaccines many in the same day. How does it make sense to give a fragile immune system of a children multiple virus in a day. Within these 25 years we also no have 1 in 6 children with cognitive disorder (epilepsy, autism, dyslexia, ADD, sleep disorders, anxiety, intellectual disabilities etc) and some of these issues are even lists as side effects of these vaccines.
I get it that yes vaccines have done some good for society I just don't think they should be presented as a single sided coin. They are a DRUG, often full of un-needed metals and additives and given without urgency.
There is NO reason for a newborn to be given a Hep B vaccine. The creates admitted the reason the population gets it is because they are unable to reach the few thousand that get it. Only way to get Hep B is by sharing needles, sex and exposure to blood of infected person. So meanwhile children are being damaged for their entire lives though they were never at risk of getting the disease.
I will go about selectively vaccinating my child. No Thimerasol, Alumminum or other junk. and no needles for virus they are not at risk for.
I'm not trying to start a debate here just throwing a different perspective out there... Maybe the reason that we have seen a rise over the last 25 years in the disorders you listed is because we are becoming better at discovering them in people. The amount of knowledge that we have now on said disorders is way larger than what we had even 15 years ago. With knowledge comes better understanding and with better understanding comes easier ways to diagnose people. Just a thought. Like I said not trying to disagree or start a debate (because I think there has been enough of that) but really just putting a different perspective out there.
It may have changed since but in2002 and 2003 thermosine was in one of the combination vaccines. (My ped. confirmed) I had to request thermosine free and they were given separately for both of my older kiddos. We live in the US. I haven't researched since but will definitely avoid it.
thats around the time the FDA reduced and removed thimerasol from a few vaccines but not all. while all along they were saying that its not harmful, hah they why take it out.
Always get a list of ingredients of the vaccine....its disturbing but better to know than not
You know what can cause permanent disabilities and cognitive impairment according to actual evidence? A life threatening illness at under a year old.
and mercury poisioning
Thimerosal is not used in any vaccines on the childhood vaccination schedule. The only vaccine it is currently in is multi dose vials of the flu vaccine. Thimerosal is a totally different compound from the Mercury that you find in fish that accumulates in your body and causes Mercury poisoning.
About hep b, people don't always know they have it so I wouldn't risk my kid. My boyfriend's grandfather had hep b from a blood transfusion for FIFTEEN YEARS without knowing at all. When his liver shut down and he needed a complete transplant, that's when he found out he had it. He no longer has it, but shit who knows who can have it and not know. Normal people don't get tested for it often.
Thanks for fighting the good fight, @Jenichael1217. It's sisyphean I know, and this world needs more of you (and more of your brilliant info graphics!)
My folks (2 cardiologists, a pediatrician, a public health expert and a head of pharmaceutical research) are pushing that rock right alongside you.
But until yesterday, when I 'met' my perfect little son at our anatomy scan, I didn't really understand what keeps them getting out of bed each day to educate and fight all the misinformation.
@amw2133 --Absolutely! The diagnostic criteria for cognitive impairments in the numerous DSM revisions (if you have time, check it out, it's fascinating), as well coverage requirements for insurance companies and government programs has DRASTICALLY changed in the past 30 years. We as a society are also much more educated about mental health and developmental disorders.
Also, as a FTM who probably fits more of a crunchy/diy/eco friendly lifestyle, I really resent that this has come to include pseudoscience and "woo" practices. But, I also resent the existence and perception of categories themselves as they remove nuance and complexity.

I'll totally have to check that out after work. I completely agree. I've been in the early education field for 8 years now and it's amazing how much our thought process has changed (with regards to early diagnosis and such) even since I have started in the field. I was raised by an extremely crunchy mom. I was breast fed until I was almost 3, never had store bought baby food, and didn't eat meat until I was 11 among other things. But I have all my vaccinations (except one MMR but I was tested years ago and the anti bodies are all there so the doctor said I didn't need a 3rd). It makes me sad because I totally identify with the "crunchy crowd" but some people have taken it to an extreme.

News flash: Your child is at risk for ALL VIRUSES.
I didn't start this thread to debate and divide, I respect everyone right to live according to their beliefs. As we can all understand when we see or hear something that we believe may be harming someone especially a child we feel the need to speak up.
I mean no disrespect to any of you be expressing my views, only mean to share what I have come across and hold to be true.
In the end we will all do what we feel is best for our child. It gets so hard with doctors, family and society chirping in our ears.
The best thing anyone can do is educate themselves on an issue, don't just take your doctors word, make your own choice for your family.
I am all for parents coming together and agreeing to disagree. I've seen that video many times and it is beautiful to see sahm and working moms, crunchy, formula and bf, etc. However, none of those choices could literally kill another person's child!
I do believe you truly want the best for your child. Videos like the one you posted a few days ago paint a very scary picture. I think part of the issue is that while we all know someone that has cognitive disorders, most people have never actually seen a child suffering from or dying of measles or pertussis. It is much easier to fear something you have actually encountered.
Unfortunately, it seems as though more people will be getting a chance to see these diseases up close and personal if the anti vaccine propaganda continues spreading. I don't know if you looked at the info graphic I posted, but since more people started choosing to not vaccinate, the number of cases of pertussis in the us has risen from 2,900 to 50,000. This is a disease the literally causes the child to cough so hard that they burst blood vessels in their face, eyes, and brain. I noticed a large portion of the people in the documentary were French and I'm assuming that they also have more people choosing not to vaccinate. Did you know that France recently had a massive outbreak of measles that affected 22,000 people? Measles was actually declared eradicated until people became more afraid of the vaccine than the deadly disease!
There are some people that have bad reactions to vaccines. However, there are also people that experience bad reactions after eating peanuts, strawberries, milk, eggs, or wheat. Do you refuse to give your child any of those foods because they might go into anaphylactic shock?
Im pretty crunchy lol I give birth in a tub Still nurse almost 2 year old. And even if i couldn't nurse i would never use commercial formula Baby (toddler)wear Bed share Delay vaccines Clean eating My boys will remain whole I walk or ride bikes instead of driving

Genuinely curious, what other options would there be if you couldn't nurse and wouldn't use formula?

Just as an aside, a personal anecdote, if you will, my entire family got pertussis earlier this year, being vaccinated didn't seem to make a difference. Toddler took it like a champ, was sick the least amount of time, husband was a big baby but got through it and still managed to work after the contagious stage, I was a total pregnant mess for three weeks on the couch. Holy F did it suck, kind of like a super-sucky flu with a cough that wouldn't give up. That being said, pertussis doesn't really scare me like it used to, though we did quarantine ourselves because I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

I hear what your are saying and that's why when the time comes for my child to get various vaccines I want to see the actual ingredients in that exact vaccine the doctor is proposing to inject my child with.
Im not 100% against vaccines i understand they have helped us get to where we are today. But I push for neuro-toxin free vaccines spread over over time, not 3+ in one day.
Just as you said about child may have allergies I won't give them all those foods in one day, then I don't know what caused the reaction and it gives their body a chance to cope. Also egg proteins (along with various disturbing animal cells) are used in many vaccines, should the child be allergic, another chance for reaction. Some variation of vaccines are available egg free, I know.
So this is why is pays off to research and make your own choice. I know the severity of whooping cough and measles, therefore I will practice selective/delayed vaccination.

My daughter was born and vaccinated in France and got measles back in 2007 when she was two! Now i look into building my kids to be at their best with nutrition so they can fight anything off.

You might think vaccination didn't make a difference but being immunized protected you from developing a more severe disease. And the reason pertussis is around again in the first place is because of the anti vaccine trend.
I'm 29, husband is 30 Together since 2006 Married 01.17.15
None? I think everyone parents their own way and shouldn't be put into certain "groups". I plan on doing a little of each.
Edit for spelling
Yeah I'm me. I'm going to do whatever works. Other than vaccinating (because, duh. Come on, that's negligence. What's next, not taking the kid to the dentist? Treating her fever with witch hazel?) I have absolutely no expectations on myself anymore. Anything could happen.
I am really fully into the cloth diaper idea because i hate waste like that but as a family that travels literally more than we're home, I can't guarantee that will work for us. Traveling might mean disposables. Who knows?
I almost died as an infant when some weirdo's unvaccinated kid gave me the measles. I survived it but was weak for a number of years. I was too young for the rubella shot at that time which is how i caught it.
If you bring this upon not only your own kid but other kids, you're a neglectful parent and neglectful human being. To this day, if i ever find out who that moron is, I'm going to do my utmost to give her, like, the plague or something.

Oki-dokie!
But one more thing... science and vaccines eradicated many horrible diseases. Do you know anyone with smallpox?

Ok this has to be the dumbest thing I've read all day.
My daughter was born and vaccinated in France and got measles back in 2007 when she was two! Now i look into building my kids to be at their best with nutrition so they can fight anything off.
That's not really how it works, though...

So ridiculous....so science hasn't cured any diseases? WTAF? You know damn well science cures diseases. Any person with an elementary education knows that.

And if it's not, with all due respect, you truly need to educate yourself further. It is one thing to not want to vaccinate your children and while I absolutely do not agree with that decision in most circumstances, I understand and respect that their are some people whose minds you simply will not change
But to truly believe that your child's DIET is going to protect them from a life threatening or debilitating disease is pure ignorance, that is simply not how it works.
There are 3 macronutrients- carbs, protein, and fat, as well as 3 micronutrients- vitamins, minerals, and water. This is ALL that it comes down to in nutrition. While your micronutrients and a perfect balance of your macros CAN help your immune system to perform at its best in regards to protecting your body from things such as a common cold or influenza (think NK cells and the like...) measles, pertussis, hepatitis etc are all strong enough to bypass these guards...
Actually though, now that I think about it, and I could be wrong, but aren't you the person who said you won't drink the recommended amount of water because it's just "not for you?" Because if that was you, then you can have a perfect diet (which in itself is near impossible) and your immunity will not be protected even from a common cold because your cells cannot function to their best ability when they themselves of fighting for survival, let alone to fight off small illnesses.
If you are that person then I simply can't help you because you obviously would not care or believe anything I could say no matter how much research backs it up...If that wasn't you, then my mistake.
Re: Crunchy, Silky, or Scrunchy
To each their own and I hope people do what they feel is best for their families, as long as research is done and the decision is looked at from both sides.
Also, anyone that still thinks that autism is in any way linked to vaccines has not looked at the legitimate scientific research that has been done since Wakefield's fraudulent article.

@reware - I think I might love you.
Jamie
Maybe the reason that we have seen a rise over the last 25 years in the disorders you listed is because we are becoming better at discovering them in people. The amount of knowledge that we have now on said disorders is way larger than what we had even 15 years ago. With knowledge comes better understanding and with better understanding comes easier ways to diagnose people.
Just a thought. Like I said not trying to disagree or start a debate (because I think there has been enough of that) but really just putting a different perspective out there.
and mercury poisioning
Thimerosal is not used in any vaccines on the childhood vaccination schedule. The only vaccine it is currently in is multi dose vials of the flu vaccine. Thimerosal is a totally different compound from the Mercury that you find in fish that accumulates in your body and causes Mercury poisoning.

So more than ever now, you're a real hero to me.
I'd rather my children not have measles, polio, smallpox, pertussis, diphtheria, etc. so DD has all shots, and so will this new LO.
Jamie

But one more thing... science and vaccines eradicated many horrible diseases. Do you know anyone with smallpox?
