March 2016 Moms

Frustrated by EDD

just having a little rant on here becuase DH thinks im just being silly. LMP was 30th may which put my EDD at 6th march. Had a scan becuase of bleeding a few days later and they pushed me out to 9th march and i had the followup scan yesterday (everything is fine) but they have pushed me out to 16th march! Dont get me wrong i am very happy that baby is fine but i am counting down to get to 12 weeks (bleeding scare made me really paranoid) and every time i go to docs they are like sorry! You arent as pregnant as you thought! I would have been nearly 9.5 weeks but alas im only 7. Also im not actually wishing away my pregnancy, i would just feel so relaxed to finally get to 12 weeks! Dont know if anyone in the same boat as me but it is frustrating!

Re: Frustrated by EDD

  • Unfortunately that's very common and frustrating! Just got to wait, wait, wait. You most likely ovulated later than the "average" CD 14 which they initially base your original EDD.

Sounds frustrating, but if you haven't seen it yet you should check out the thread "chances of NOT having a mc" which I would post the link to if I knew how to on mobile!!

Anyways at 7 weeks you are already down to a 4% or so chance of mc as opposed to 2% at 9.5, so things are looking good for you overall even if 12 weeks is far away!

Thanks ladies, yeah i know that its not the end of the world, its just a small frustration. Also it means the secret keeping is forever becuase i will have known im pregnant for 13-14 weeks before actually make it to the 12 week safezone! @mb0112 that chart is amazing! Has got me through many a panic attack!

It's not quite the same but I had thought I was 8 weeks and went in for my first apt to find I was only 7.... Finally I'm just now 9 weeks... Hang in there. I'm longing for the 12 week mark too.
  • @jrv28 i know! In my head i know its not a big deal but when you are so excited about baby development (and to tell everyone) it does make it feel that much longer. Thank god my midwife has told me that my latest scan wad at the most accurate time so it wont change again. I can just look forward to moving ahead!
  • I had my lmp May 10th! And for some reason I'm now due March 7th. Meaning I ovulated almost a month late. Which is crazy since I had a bfp on June 27th. For some reason every time I get a scan they put me a week behind. But there's a heartbeat. That's all I ask for.
  • @lashachris it seems wierd to me. According to development it means i ovulated 2 weeks later then i thought i did. I got a positive OPK on day 18 (of a 32 day cycle) so lets say i ovulated on day 20, i get that i could have randomly ovulated much later, except that i got a positive HPT on day 32! So they say , oh you must have ovulated much later but they say minimum positive on HPT is about 10 dpo which surprise surprise takes me back to day 21! So if i did ovulate way later there is no way i should have got a positive so early! Can anyone shed some light on this?
  • @clairewalker were you charting/temping? That and US are the only way to know when you actually ovulated. You can have multiple hormone surges in a month without actually ovulating. You may have ovulated later than you thought.

It sounds silly but I'm actually hoping my due date gets pushed into the next week when I finally get my first appt on 8/17. It will work out better for my maternity leave timing (work in a school and want to stay out the rest of the school year) and if I did ovulate late, I don't want them telling me my baby is late and start inducing based on an earlier due date.
  • I think the number of days that implantation takes can vary. Once the baby traveled to your uterus, it could could have implanted right away instead of hanging out a few days waiting to find a good spot.
  • You ladies are great! @SparkE82 i was temping but i got really sick that month so my chart is a mess! @mb0112 you have a good point there! I would hate to be induced when baby just isnt ready!
  • If I went by my estimated due date based on last period, I would be due at the end of JANUARY. I didn't ovulate until cd45, and my first scan at 4 weeks, the sac measured at 4w5d. That was too early to be accurate so at my second scan, it was adjusted back 4 days. It felt like I was never getting out of the blueberry stage. I was frustrated at first but I try to keep it in perspective. A few days or weeks is nothing.

  • I will always happily take as late a guess date as i can get! I don't want people (like the ob/midwife) getting impatient at the end of my pregnancy, and it's nicer when antsy people start asking you "how much longer" to not have them thinking you're "overdue" :)

  • And you know what?  Right now these babies are so tiny it's very hard to get a good reading.  It's going to be a lot more accurate at the 20w anatomy scan when dates can change.  Ultrasounds are not 100% accurate.

Alas, that's just not true. In early pregnancy the rate of growth is much less variable and therefore first trimester ultrasounds are considered accurate for determining EDD (a variation of five days is recommended prior to nine weeks and seven days between 9-14 weeks). ACOG does not recommend changing a woman's EDD on the basis of a second or third trimester ultrasound.

But a 16w head is much different than a 20w head (I know that's a giant spread, just saying that sometimes 7w is hard to get a good measurement).

  • My big puzzlement is not that i ovulated later, but rather that if thats true then how come i got a BFP so early then? I get that sometimes ovulation sometimes happens much later but we didnt BD after day 19 and i got my BFP on day 32! So doc is pretty much saying i ovd around the time i got my BFP! And an egg wouldnt have fertalised after that becuase hubby went away so no sperm!

While it's true that a 7 week old embryo is tiny and there's some variability in measurements, the research has consistently shown that there is less variability in growth in the first tri than later in pregnancy. My son measured within days of EDD in the first tri, by the anatomy scan he was measuring a week ahead, and by third tri he was something like 10 days. Because the first tri ultrasounds were within the margin of error for EDD, that's the date that stuck. At my ultrasound on Monday the tech took three crown-to-rump length measurements and the measurements were averaged. There are technical specifications and standards which is why the first tri dating scan is MORE accurate than the anatomy scan.

OP, has your doctor scheduled another ultrasound to check growth?
  • My apologies, I recant

  • @jess9802 that was the followup scan. The first one was to confirm viabilty (due to bleeding) but all they could see was a sac. The one i had just this monday was the followup and did show growth (now heartbeat) so my next scan will be 12 weeks. Dont get my wrong im happy my pregnancy seems to be progressing i just hate it when docs cant answer your questions. Ive got an appointment withy midwife on the 10th so im going to ask her
  • @clairemwalker thank you for posting this! I'm in the exact same boat as you are. Lmp was May 24 but I'm breastfeeding so I've been told that's not accurate. Any ways I got my very faint positive preg test on June 24. Since then it's been 3 ultrasounds and multiple Hcg test. My levels are going up like they are supposed to but my ultrasounds are showing I'm not nearly as far along as I thought. I have another ultrasound on Friday to hopefully see some progress last 2 have seen the sac and its growing but no baby! Told I'm just not far enough along yet! So stressful! Guess I'm with you just found out wayyyyy early!

My BFP came on June 28th. Based on LMP I'd be due March 3. Based on 1st ultrasound, I'd be due March 7th too. My OB sticks with LMP for the estimated due date, unless the ultrasound varies by a week, or you know your date of conception, which I thought was really interesting. I thought for sure they'd go by the ultrasound date!

  • Yeah thats interesting! Here its pretty standard to go by ultrasound, they dont care about LMP

  • My edd based on my period was Feb 27th. They moved out to march 8th based on my ultrasound. Based on when I got a positive pregnancy test my due date can't possibly be that late. So I've just been telling people early march. It's all guess work.
