What to expect at first prenatal visit?

Hey everyone! I go on Tuesday, the 28th, for my first appointment! I'm about 6 weeks and 3 days, according to my last period. I'm nervous, excited, happy, scared and everything in between. What should I expect to hear and see at this appointment? What all do they do besides the ultrasound and whatnot?

My appointment is also Tuesday the 28th & I'm 6 weeks & 3 days today according to my LMP. I'm a FTM & asked when I booked the appointment they said they have 4 seperate stages & I'll be meeting everyone through out my pregnancy. First appointment is the "midwife" she will get family history, confirm pregnancy, do a pap & try to find a heart beat if able too (fingers crossed they can). Looking forward to Tuesday!

I had a vaginal ultra sound and did some blood work! My first app was just to confirm so that one didn't really count.

I have already had the pregnancy confirmed and spoken about medication I was previously on. They said this appointment will be quite long, around 45 minutes or so. I hope they can find the heartbeat! That will make me feel so much better about everything. Good luck!

I figured blood work would be on the list and an ultrasound, I'm assuming mine will also be vaginal. I hope there's something to see and hCG levels are okay! Ah, I'm so excited. I can't wait to see little jelly bean!

You may have luck with a transabdominal scan. I had it with my first and they attempted it this time at 6w5d and were successful. I had a full bladder and we were able to see the heart beating and get the needed measurements.

So the trick is to go in with a super full bladder? I'm sure I can manage that! I know every place is different, but will they allow you to request different scans along with whatever one they're doing?

Seems like quite a bit of people have appointments on Tuesday! Expect everything! From what I was told, there will be all sorts of tests ran, blood drawn, all that. I'm more nervous of the outcome. Good luck though!

how did everyone's appointments go today? I was SO disappointed with ours . They didn't even try to see the baby, didn't draw blood, didn't ask symptoms, didn't do anything the pertained to the baby except explain the dangers of different food & did a pap since i was due for one. I did not like the office at all & they didn't schedule me for my next one until almost 12 weeks! so I'm going elsewhere to another doctor down the street. Such a disappointment & not i have to wait until August 17th (9 weeks) to see our baby

but at least it't not 12 weeks

To say I am disappointed with my appointment would be an understatement. I called to schedule my appointment and was told my dr. likes to see people between their first 6-8 weeks. I mentioned I have a history of ectopic pregnancies and the person making my appointment decided they should see me sooner (I'm just over 5 weeks) and I should have an ultrasound to rule out another ectopic. Not for the purpose of seeing a heartbeat, simply to make sure both me and baby are safe. I generally make my appointments on the days my doctor's office is open later so I don't have to miss work, but couldn't this time because of the ultrasound tech's schedule. So my appointment was noon today.

Fast forward to 1:05 when I finally asked someone how much longer it would be (not in my nature to piss the people taking care of me off) and learned that I was merely scheduled to confirm the pregnancy. Oh and the ultrasound tech had just left for the day because whoever made my appointment neglected to put me on the schedule. Upon hearing this news I start BAWLING. Like, full on ugly cry. I am not a very emotional person so I am so embarrassed but I couldn't stop it and don't know if I even want to go back there.

I will say that the nurses (or NAs? lab techs? I never know) were beyond nice and accommodating once I approached one of them (the woman at the front desk that checked me in was at lunch and I suspect she is the one that made my appointment) about my wait. But it still took a full 2 hours just to pee in a cup, meet the NP (oh yeah - my dr is on vacation and no one mentioned that to me when I was making the appointment) and give one vile of blood, so I'm not pleased.

I really like my dr and MOST of the staff, but I have to keep my job and can't do this whole 3 hour lunch thing again, so if my appointment in 2 weeks doesn't go better I am going to switch.

I was given a transvaginal ultrasound and she couldn't find it (probably because my bladder was filling up) but they found the baby with transabdominal. I gave them my health history, went over questions I had, did a pelvic exam (but not pap since I had one at my 6 week pp check last August), did blood testing. It was pretty thorough and I was very pleased with this practice. I'm 7w6d today.
