Has anyone started buying maternity clothes?

I gave away the majority of my maternity clothes after DS3 was born because he was going to be our last, so I'm basically starting from scratch with maternity clothes.  I know it's early, my regular clothes still fit, but I'm finding it hard to resist the sales on fall/winter clothing at A Pea in the Pod.  Especially the buy one get on free designer outlet sale.  Anyone else stocking up yet??

  • The lovely bloat that makes me FEEL 5months pregnant has spawned the purchase of a few pants and dresses from the maternity section- H+M is wonderful, just make sure to think a season or two ahead so you can still wear them when you actually need them!
  • Yes! I have been buying stuff on sale and clearance and I probably won't need much more than I have now. With my first I didn't wear maternity pants until around six months (just regular jeans with a belly band) but this time I can't wait too experience the comfort of stretchy jeans and pants!!

  • Yes! Had to break down and buy 2 pairs of shorts (DS was born in the winter, so I didn't have any from last time). Thanks to bloat AND this being my second I couldn't zip anything. Haven't bought any new tops though, I'm waiting till the fall lines come out

Have you seen the inset panel jeans they have now??  It's only been 19 months since I've been pregnant but apparently these are new or I just didn't notice them last time but they look amazing!!

  • Yes. I haven't bought any yet but they def didn't have those last time I was pregnant. I love the comfort of the full belly panel so not sure if I would like those but they would def look less like maternity jeans!

I've been watching for sales on basics. Last one was born in October so I have a mostly summer maternity wardrobe. I'll need some long sleeved shirt and a new batch of maternity tanks since I ruined my last batch by wearing while nursing. But I'm still fitting into my non-maternity jeans, though the ones I'm wearing today may have to get put away soon cause they're a bit tight in the tummy area already.

I saved all my clothes from pregnancy #1 but did buy a cute shirt on sale on Saturday.
  • I've bought some stuff and will probably be wearing it soon.

  • I will have to go find maternity shorts before they are out of the stores. I am going to Hawaii in November and don't want to be wearing jeans the whole time. Since I had a January baby last time, shorts were not a necessary purchase.
  • I have also. I bought a bunch of cowl neck sweaters on clearance and yoga pants at destination maternity. I know once the fall hits I won't fit in my pants!
  • I have bought a batch of clothes from Old Navy and Gap (like 5 dresses, 1 skirt, 1 pants, and too many tops to count, probably like 10 - which include nursing shirts and tanks) - amazing sales!!  Then, I just bought another dress, shirt, and pants over the weekend.  I can't imagine needing too many more things - although @aeh8810 just reminded me that we are hoping to do a baby moon in November so I should probably get some shorts too while they are still around.  Although, worst case scenario, I have two with elastic waste bands now and plenty of stretchy summer dresses.  Bring on the stretchy pants!!

  • Yep! The Loft had maternity pants for like $7 over the weekend, I ordered a few pair. I'll probably buy stuff more as I catch sales, but not too much until I really need it & see what works best.
  • Guilty! Zulily had winter jackets on sale and I snagged one along with a few other things like tunics and a sweater. I'm trying to space out the baby-related purchases, and I know once we get to the point of knowing the gender, there will be no stopping me!

  • With all this bloat my regular clothes dont fit or are just plain uncomfortable. I bought Maternity clothing and I feel so much more comfortable in them!
  • Yes I broke out mine from last pregnancy and then went to motherhood and got some sweaters for winter for like 5$ each ;)
  • I haven't had to break mine out yet, but I'm close. I love the comfort of the maternity pants but since I'm still trying to keep it a secret, I don't want the high waisted belly band line to give me away..... Or the hiking up the slipping elastic pant dance. I do have a wedding to go to in a couple of weeks and then another at the end of summer so I think I will cave and get a maternity dress to wear comfortably to both.
  • I am a FTM and have no idea how to shop for maternity clothes. I would love to get in on some of the early sales on fall styles, but how do I know what size I'll need?

  • @zephyrlt The manager at Motherhood Maternity advised me that when the time comes, you just select the clothing based on the size you normally wear. So if you normally wear a 10 (like I do), then you would just buy maternity size 10. As a FTM, I don't know how accurate that is though. On another note, if DH "suggests" I go buy maternity clothes "soon" one more time I'm going to punch him in the nut sack. I was doing just fine with a waist extender and then all of a sudden the bloat magically disappeared! This week I totally fit in my normal clothes just fine, and then he suggested it again today. I'm excited to show and really feel pregnant, but come on! I'm only 8 weeks dude.

  • only been shopping the sales... at 7weeks I had already grown a cup and band size to a 40E so many of my dresses/tops didn't fit.  I also just bought leggings one size up and granny panties to hold in the blump for now.

  • I bought two pairs of work pants because I was tired of zipping and unzipping them every time I got up. They're incredibly comfortable and I'll probably buy more once I'm further along. No tops yet because all my tops fit okay for now.
  • @zephyrit I agree with the PP, just get your pre pregnancy size.  That will last you a while at least.  If you stay in the 'recommended' 24-35lbs you should be good through most of the pregnancy.  Also for me, I needed maternity pants before I needed maternity shirts, but basically my non-maternity size was good until the bitter end. Then basically nothing covered the entire bump and I was not willing to buy more!  It was a classy look as you can imagine!

The only thing you may have to experiment with is what type of 'belly' you like.  I personally like the demi panel, but a lot of people like the full belly panel, but even though you may have a preference or a favorite, they pretty much all work.

  • Had to give in and get some pants for work! Got a pair of capris that unsnap unto full length pants - so those will work double duty into the fall.
Wearing my first pair today. I know I'll be pulling my shirt down all day to cover the waistband! But It'll be better than having to unbutton my pants.
I do not like how Motherhood brand is sized Small Medium Large instead of numbers. Made me feel like I was buying pj's or something instead of actual pants

I can't stand the demi.  I hate how it pushes up my belly and almost deforms it.  Full panel all the way.

  • I eyed them at Target the other day, but ultimately just purchased some shorts two sizes bigger than what I'm currently wearing to get me through the rest of the summer. When buying maternity clothes, how do you try them on? I mean, if you don't have a bump yet, how do you know what size you'll need when you get a bump? Or does that not really matter? I just don't want to wait until the last minute when I have nothing in my closet that fits me for work. lol
  • Not yet. I'm still using a waist extender I bought on amazon for my jeans (but they are starting to get tight). Maurices was carrying various tops that had elastic chincing on the sides so ive bought a few of those tops for my early days of pregnancy. They also carried midi skirts with elastic waistbands so I bought a few of those. I've seen the side panelmaternity jeans and they look way comfy and might be nice as postpartum clothes too.
  • LaLaurie06 maternity stores have a fake belly you can snap on to try the clothes on. Very helpful. I like the full belly panel once I'm showing more but before then I like the ones that are like normal pants and have the elastic on the sides. The Demi panel always seems to hurt my belly. My lower abdome is pretty sensitive from the very beginning of pregnancy. I'd love to hear of some great maternity stores.
  • I also wear a lot of long tanks under shirts (usually layer any ways)... it basically acts like a belly band and has made me feel more comfortable along with the bottoms I choose.

  • I took out all my old maternity clothes from storage and just groaned at all of them. I got so sick of wearing most of that stuff over and over again. And all the flowy tops with string around the waist, blah! I like the form fitting tops to show off the bump much better. Some of the maternity stuff just looks so... matronly...

As for this pregnancy, I lost a bunch of weight after having LO so I have pants ranging in the size I wear now up to 4 sizes bigger still in my closet. I think that'll hold me for a while. Then I'll switch to preg pants. I have noticed my work pants getting tighter around the waist, eek!

  • I had to buy a maternity bathing suit because my regular ones no longer fit even a regular suit in a larger ssize didn't work. I have to make an 8 hour trip to my moms house to pick up my maternity clothes since I let my sister use all of my clothes a year ago when she was pregnant with my niece. So I've tried not buy anything until I get my clothes and see what I have first.

I bought a bunch of non-maternity stretchy shirts and maxi skirts on sale this last summer that have lots of room for belly...planning out my winter and early spring clothing budget now!

  • I'm on my 3rd, last babe just turned 6. I already have the blump at 5w3d. I will definitely need some but have been using the rubber band trick on my shorts for now.

So reading this thread had me curious about the inset panel jeans and I looked it up online - just ordered some from Gap.com bc starting today they have a 40% off promo going on (I think it ends on 8/1)! They had great reviews (and I had a 10 buck reward that needed to be used by Friday) so I grabbed some. But seriously still a good deal with just the 40 off! The promo is "40NOW" listed at the top of the page - I also bought a comfy looking shirt :)

  • Yes! I bought an abundance of things just because I'm feeling incredibly bloated and uncomfortable in my clothes. I bought a bunch of things because there was a huge sale online and figure I'll take a look and decide what to keep once I have it in front of me. I couldn't pass up the good deal!

I went to the maternity store yesterday hoping they'd still have some shorts. They did, but they were huge, and won't work for me. So I then went to Target and just bought elastic waist shorts to help for the next few months.

  • The most I've done is browse, I'm a FTM and maybe a little in denial about how much my body is going to change. I haven't told my mom yet, I'm kinda hoping she saved some stuff. I'm probably going to wait until I can't zip my jeans up anymore :((
