Adult beverages

My apologies if this has already been discussed, but I am curious as to what all of you ladies use as a philosophy for alcohol. My pediatrician told me that I would need to pump and dump four hours after having a drink. Personally, I don't really want to pump and dump so I simply have not had a drink. However, a girlfriend told me that she was told consuming as much as you would to be able to legally operate a car is safe for breast milk. Thoughts?? Cuz this mama would enjoy the heck out of a margarita...

Go get yourself a margarita!!! The AAP advises that if you are okay to drive you are okay to breastfeed. I've had 1-2 drinks and still fed.

I heard the able to drive able to feed theory too. I have one drink right after I nurse, it's been a beer or one of those bud light Rita things.

  • You don't ever have to pump & dump unless you feel engorged and have to pump. Just waiting until the alcohol is out of your system is fine. I personally waited two hours after having a glass of wine or a beer. Both times I pumped and tested my milk with one of those alcohol test strips and it came back fine.
  • Same here. Have paced myself when drinking and if I'll indulged too much I've waited until the alcohol passed and used the little strips (get those, great for peace of mind)
  • I wanted to have a glass of wine a few weeks ago but DH was very nervous and uncomfortable with it. In the end I just had a sip and honestly felt less anxious about nursing DS. My only hesitation is with how young he is. I've read that it's no problem to have a glass of wine and no need to pump and dump. However most of what I've read was referring to babies over 3 months. For my own comfort level I think I will reassess my decision once DS is a bit older.
  • My pediatrician gave the "if you can drive, you can feed" advice to me.

Same here, but he just mentioned beer or wine.. Nothing about liquor. I also would LOVE a margarita but still am hesitant about liquor. I'm happy enough with my IPAs for now.

  • Once DS is down for the night, this mama enjoys a beer or two. I've only done this three times since DS has been born. I've never had more than 2 beers. He usually wakes around 3-4am to nurse and I felt comfortable drinking a beer at 8:30pm and nursing at 4am.
  • I've been doing the 2 hour for every glass of wine rule and using my test strips!!
