How much to wash...

So I just had my shower this past week and did some extra shopping for clothes this weekend since I didn't feel we had enough for the first few months ( only had like 12 outfits total up to 3 months and 5 were newborn ). Anyways...asking for moms who have been here before, how much do I wash before my son comes? I don't want to wash it all and then he doesn't wear half of it but this is my first and I could use again later if we have another boy. Can't decide and don't want to over prepare if that's possible. Help please?!

I've only washed my newborn clothes, blankets, hats, socks and towels
  • I washed everything. I plan on putting all of the clothes in a tote for possible future daughter #2.
  • I washed everything and didn't regret it. I know some people leave the tags on some stuff in case you want to exchange it for a bigger size and that makes sense but DD wore everything at least once.
  • I washed all the new stuff. I don't have a lot of newborn stuff and if it doesn't fit him I will take it to the shelter and donate it. I've a ton of hand me downs that have been washed too so even if he only wears it once, I am okay with it.

  • I won't wash before 39 weeks so the clothes don't get dusty or pick up food smells. After that I will only wash newborn size. Did this with my others and it worked just fine. Plenty of time to wash clothes when the sleepy baby comes!

  • I'm washing it all, but I have also bought very little myself. I didn't get gift receipts and while I know I could probably try to do some detective work for exchanges, knowing me I won't get around to it.
  • I've washed everything it seems everyother day my mil has bought him something or orther, it made no sense to leave tags on things...then again were moving so the faster I could wash it and vacuum pack the bags the better in our situation. Plus it's all so cute I just can't help myself!
  • I washed all the newborn and 0-3 month stuff for DD1 and she ended up in newborn UNTIL she was 3 mos old.  This time I am only washing newborn and 1 or 2 0-3 month things in case she turns out to be a BIG baby.

  • I only washed the hand me downs that friends gave me. I'll wash something new for her to wear home, but otherwise I'll wait until I get her home. My first was so thin he had to wear preemie clothes (without feet because he was really long). I'm afraid she is going to be smaller than he was.
  • I washed everything around 36w with #1. We had a ton of hand me downs, and the new clothes we were mostly given bigger sizes, so we used everything.

  • I removed tags and washed everything like some of the pp's. I understand some people are apprehensive about that but tbh I only got like 6 or 7 newborn size outfits and unless kid is born at 10lbs he'll get to wear them at least once. And I know once he outgrows things I'll be able to sell everything as a lot on some of my Facebook yard sale pages no problem.

  • hmm. I washed the used stuff I got. I'll also wash probably some of the newborn (anything that doesnt have tags to start) and some 0-3 just for like the first week, but I'm keeping the tags on as much as possible. Anything that doesn't have a tag (like that was a gift or something) will definitely get washed. I'd hate to not use an outfit but if it really doesn't fit or we just don't get to it, I'm sure I could find something else cute in the right size to replace it.

  • I've gotten all my clothes from goodwill so they're definitely washed. All my newborn & 0-3 is washed and folded and sorted by type (onsies, pants, sleepers) and the bigger clothes are in boxes since we're moving. I just had my shower and no one got me clothes so I dodged that bullet but I would probably be in the camp of detagging and washing, just because I know these clothes are going to turn into hand me downs (I have two friends actively TTC and two more who are planning on TTC in the next twelve months)
  • I washed all newborn, 0-3 months, 3 months and 3-6 months size clothes, everything larger than 6 months still has tags and is just waiting until we need that size. I would love to wash it all but I figured that when he starts wearing size 3 months then I'll wash the larger clothes. But I have washed all sheets, towels, blankets, pnp sheets, changing pad covers, hats, socks and bibs, because you never know when you will need those items.
  • I washed everything that we got used since it can't be returned anyways. We lucked out and only got a couple of new things and they were all in the larger sizes, so I'm waiting on those. I figure I will make a decision on any clothes that come after baby gets here and exchange anything that we don't need unless I absolutely love it since we have plenty of 3-6 month clothes and my friend is lending us a tote full of 0-3 month stuff just in case she is really tiny.
  • I'm so nervous so I haven't washed anything or taken any tags off. I haven't opened a single baby item yet and won't until he's safely here. I am planning to wash the take home outfit, a couple of receiving blankets, a crib sheet and another couple of outfits. Everything else can wait. It doesn't take long to do laundry and I'd rather it be freshly washed anyhow.
