Who was right?

Re: Who was right?

  • Time out in a car while I go back into the store? Uh no. Not at any age. She should had just sat in the car with the child and waited for the grandparents.

What the hell kind of time out practice is that?!

Eh, I leave my 15 year old in the car. There definitely is an age where you can leave them alone.

Yeah but it isn't time out. It's "I'm running in be right back." - completely different. My mom would leave my brother and I in the car in the 90s when I was about 8/9 and she always said to do that high pitch scream I had if someone approached. She usually parked right in front of the door and it was never like a Target or Walmart. More like a gas station.

Edit to add: I was more astonished that she was using it as a "time out" and that's why I said not at any age.

But probably not for time out. I agree that it is not an acceptable time out practice to drop your small child in the car and return to the store.

Of course there is an age when you can leave you child in the car. But you need to trust that they will be safe in the car, and should something happen, like it gets to hot or some other emergency arises where they would need your help, that they would be able to get themselves out of the car, safely navigate a parking lot and seek help. Three is too young for that! Probably any age where you are still using time out for discipline is also too young.
  • @SummerOH I know you wouldn't leave a three year old in the car by themselves. But if you left the 15 year old with a younger child I think that's fine but thats my own opinion. hehe. 15 year olds can react better in a crisis situation than a five year old or even a 10 year old.
