I'm in canada where we get 52 weeks (1 year off) mat leave...when are you mommas planning to start your leave?? I'm 27 weeks & have a high stress job that's really getting to me...not sure when I should start my leave?
I'm in Canada too - I will be going off at the end of August/beginning of September. Many of my coworkers have gone until the last minute (literally gone into labour in the office) but we have decided to go off a bit early and have time to do all the nesting type things that my job doesn't allow me time to do when I'm working (I travel a lot for work).
I have 6 weeks unpaid, I plan on working until I pop unfortunately :-(
This exactly. Sadly in the U.S. Maternity leave doesn't have to be paid for. We only get up to 12 weeks of leave where you can't be fired for being on medical leave for yourself or an immediate family member. I can use my sick days for part of it which I will be doing but by my best calculations I will only have about half of that paid for if I'm lucky.
I'm planning on working all the way until the last minute, only because my daughter was a few days late many years ago. I will only be getting paid for 6 weeks of maternity leave (if I'm lucky with all these doctors appointments eating my vacation time). I'm praying we can afford for me to take at least 12 weeks but so far its not looking that way.
Another U.S. citizen here with very little precious time to spend on maternity leave. I'll work up until I go into labor, and I hope to not have a baby in the car on the way to the hospital (or in my classroom or on the volleyball court...). I am hoping to have every bit of maternity leave to spend getting to know our newest addition!
Due date is 10/31 - last day is 10/30. I would stay until I went into labor if it were up to me (more days at home with baby), but if I go late I'm out of luck because my maternity leave substitute has to be contracted.
I'm in Canada but am still hoping to work up to the end. I would like to hopefully go back after the babies first birthday. I may use sick days for a week or so before hand if I don't feel great but then I don't now what I will do if I end up two weeks late.
I am nervous about my water breaking at work though!
I live in a border city to the us, crazy to think we can live 10 minutes apart & things are so different! I hope you guys enjoy the few weeks you have!!
I was thinking of going of sept 30, due oct 27 to allow myself to get ready & same boat I don't want to be commuting on the highway & have my water break!!

It really is how crazy a difference it is. It makes me sad that the US doesn't put more emphasis or value on moms taking maternity leave to bond with their children.
I too will be working up until my due date. I travel a lot to family homes so I hope my water doesn't break or something crazy while I'm at a meeting in a family home! Hoping to take 6 weeks off for maternity leave, depending on DH's work situation. The whole 12 would be nice, but unsure if our finances will allow it. None of my leave will be paid except for whatever PTO I have accrued at that point.
I am due October 12 and am going on maternity leave Sept 30. I'm on my feet all day and have Braxton hicks everytime I'm working. I only get six weeks paid, but am hoping to get 16-20 weeks total. My work told me I only get six weeks total, but that is not an option for me. I need to be home longer.
Apparently I need to move to Canada! I've only got 6 weeks unpaid, luckily I work from home but would still love to have a whole year to spend with my new babe
I'll start my leave on October 15 and have him on the 16th. I get 12 weeks paid and two weeks off at Christmas so Im hoping to not go back until the first of the year. Luckily I get to bring him to work with me since I work with family.
My due date is Oct. 3 and I haven't really decided yet. I will probably decide as it gets a little closer. I was planning on working all the way up to my due date but my doc has already told me she will sign me off 4 weeks before my due date because I have a high stress job. Of course, I wouldn't be getting full pay so I don't know if I will take it. I'm thinking I will probably take at least 2 weeks before baby.
Also a U.S. mama. I'm planning on staying at work until I go into labor. Like @LiveNLove44, I'm hoping to not go into labor in my classroom. I want as much time home with Baby as possible before I go back to work. I wish I didn't have to go back, but we've got bills to pay. I hope I feel stir crazy by the time going back comes around.
@livenlove44 and @gograce I am also a teacher. A few years back another teacher's water broke super early on Back to School Night (basically like open house night when all the parents come to meet you). Yikes! If that were me I would only be like 30 weeks, so I think that is very unlikely, but still a scary thought!
I'm a college professor, so I am going to try and teach classes in-person right up to my due date. I will teach my classes online after that, and not have to go into campus again until mid-January for the spring semester.
I'm in the US and plan on working until I go into labor....I, too, want to spend all of my leave with the baby. Praying that my water doesn't break at work, I will be mortified.
It's sad that this is how it works in our country.
My last day was last Friday but I'll probably go back in January. I'm in the US but DH just started his job today and will be making enough that I wouldn't have to go back if I didn't want to. I'm worried I'll lose all my skills if I wait too long.
I live in California. I wish we got 1 year in the States. But since we don't (haha) I'll be taking mine September 10. My husband is going to use his 4 weeks paternity leave, too, which is great.
If I can I'm planning on waiting until this baby comes. My work is redoing their MAT policy so I dunno how much I will get but I want as much of it as possible to be spent with baby.
Canadian momma here too. I work a physical job in the oilfield which is already becoming a problem. I work for a company that contracts me out and I am already having certain sites say they won't have me in for safety reasons. I have a few that will still take me so I plan to keep working for them as long as possible. With it being such a slow year in the oil and gas industry they don't really have much for me to do in the office either. My plan is to work until 32 weeks (Sept 4) then go on disability up until baby is born as to hopefully take advantage of the full year of maternity, although we haven't decided if I will be going back to work after this babe. We'd like to have #2 on the way by this time next year and if the economy picks up it shouldn't be a problem to live off of one income. Fingers cross my plans work out!

I get 12 weeks paid and 12 unpaid and I'm going at the end of August. I would actually have liked to stay at my job a little longer but its quite demanding physically so I have decided to give my body a rest before baby gets here!
US Momma here too it does stink that other countries have such better maternity options then we do here. What sucks for me is that I work for a company that is owned by a Swedish Company and still only get 6-8 weeks where they get 50 weeks ( I think). I plan on working right up until delivery day as long as I am able and plan on not going back until after New Years. That gives me almost 9 1/2 weeks off only 2 of which will be paid unfortunately. I'm due the 27.
I put in my resignation for my job, and I've been home the last two weeks. I've started watching two younger girls (3, and 4) from my home so I'm here everyday, but it means I'm going from no children, to three children. (Once Avery has made her appearance) it will be an interesting adventure!
Starting October 1, I'm moving to working from home part-time until October 15, when I'll just be waiting for the baby (unless he comes early!!) Then I'll be gone until January 31. Planning to work from home part time starting February 1--pretty much just need to make enough to cover the mortgage and food expenses (which is doable). I'm considering becoming a SAHM, but we'll have to see what my husband and I can afford.
My work doesn't provide any paid leave, but I have Aflac that covers 6 weeks maternity leave.
I am in Canada too, oh my goodness we are so lucky!
I am a teacher and due October 11. I plan on working right up until October 9th (Thanksgiving weekend). I would love to not go back in September.. but we are not paid all summer. We get a pay cheque at the end of June and have to make it last through the summer. I would like to get a few normal pay cheques in September before starting EI, not to mention returning back to work when baby is 12months, rather than 11months.
I'm saving up my PTO and EIB, I'll have 12 weeks of unpaid FMLA. I'm not too worried about my PTO running out because my husband makes enough money. I just wish here in the U.S. They paid for maternity leave, they got crap policies. I plan of working up to labor, I work at the hospital so I'm actually hoping I will be at work when I go into labor. Lol
I was thinking that I'm going to work up until the baby comes, but lately I've been thinking I'll stop at 39 weeks. It'll be nice to have a week (or two, if he is late!) to rest and get everything settled and organized. I want to be fully prepared and ready to go...as much as a FTM can be!
I am a Personal Trainer and in the ANG. I work for myself, so no paid maternity leave. I am due Oct 23rd and I plan on going until I pop. I feel so guilty not being there for my clients as long as possible. I will be off until the new year and then only going back part time. My schedule is way to spread out to do full time and train people.
