What do you drive?

We opted to get another Acura MDX when we started trying for #3. The back row is very tight and can fit our 4 year old with her booster and that's about it. I can't fathom driving something bigger and we test drove many vehicles before getting this. I just love my ride! DH has a TSX which could never fit 3 kids. We'll likely trade it in next summer when it's paid off and get something bigger. Curious what you families with multiple kids drive and what you're happy with. I'm not the minivan type but eager to hear all your feedback. Thanks!

Right now we just have DH's pickup truck. We will be getting a used Expedition soon. There are only so many 8-passenger vehicles in our price range. Used to drive my brother's Expedition and I loved it.

  • I have a Chevy traverse, seats 8.
  • I never in a million years thought I would drive a minivan. But guess what I bought one and absolutely love it. I am having my 4th so extra room is a must. I didnt want my kid climbing over a seat to get to the back thats why I opted for the mini van also.
  • I know you said you're not the minivan type and I never thought I was either but DH talked me into getting one and I absolutely love it! I have a Chrysler town & country. It's got 2 bucket seats in the middle and a bench seat in back. It's very roomy and has a DVD player with a screen in each row of seats that the kids love! It's great on gas mileage, too :)
  • My husband and I have a Ford edge sport and a Honda accord. He got the accord for me last year before I got pregnant and it's only a 2 door, the edge is our "family vehicle." We love them both.

  • I have an F150 and DH has an F250. I love them both but DH really wants a Tahoe. We are on baby number two and this will probably be our last. Our trucks will work great with two kids.
  • I currently have a Toyota Avalon (it's actually the car my parents bought me in high school!). DH has a Hyundai Sonata. As soon as we can, I'm going to get a Hyundai Santa Fe. We're having #2 and will be done after that, so the cars will work but I really want something bigger.

I have an 08' VW Rabbit. I've had it since HS. It's my first baby so it will do for now but we are definitely saving up for a bigger vehicle. We are leaning towards a Ford Edge or a VW Toureg.
  • I have a Dodge Journey. We bought it for our first and before we even started trying for 2 I realized we should have got a mini van. I do love my journey though.
  • My journey is 5 seats and then 2 morr that fold down into the trunk.
  • I too have the journey and find that it currently fits both a diono and an infant seat with two dogs and dh and still have space the third row seating is awesome because it folds completely down and you have in floor storage which is a life saver.... my dh doesn't know it has storage...I hide candy in there from him around the holidays!
  • We have a BMW 328i. We are thinking about getting VW Jetta. We drove one as a rental, and fell in love.
  • I drive a chrysler 200 that I bought when it first joined the market in 2011 which isn't a suitable car for a baby but it will do. And hubby, after the accident 2 weeks ago ending in our f250 getting totaled got an explorer yesterday. I'm hoping it's reliable, I love how big it is for our 2 dogs, ourselves, and LO.
  • I have a Dodge Durango which seats 7. I'm on baby number two but have loved having the extra space even before we had kids. Husband has a Honda Accord which obviously gets better gas mileage for long distance trips. Otherwise we take my car.

My parents had a Jetta and loved it. So did I! Awesome car and I'm not even a huge fan of vw's.

  • 32 weeks with our first child right now I drive a Mitsubishi Outlander but will be getting a new vehicle this week. My fiancée drives a Dodge Dart and we also have a pick up truck.
  • I never thought I'd want a minivan but we got a Honda odyssey when I had #2 and I freaking love it! Now with #4 on the way, it's a neccessity but I think even once the kids are older and I could downsize I'll stick with a van. Having the extra space, the features, etc. I can't imagine going back to something smaller- it actually drives really well too! I've had quite a few single guy friends randomly drive my van for one reason or another and they always comment how amazed they are at how nicely it drives and how much "get up and go" it has. You may want to test drive one, you might surprise yourself!

  • I have a 2013 Nissan Altima, trunk space is amazing!
  • Any chance you can get some narrower car seats? I've seen techs work wonders with 3 across in small cars. We're only on #2, but we've got an 80lb dog, so we traded my Honda Civic in for a Hyundai Santa Fe. I'm loving the extra space, and I can fit a 3rd car seat or thin big kid. A 3rd adult would be a stretch...

  • We just bought a Chevy Traverse last month and love it! I wasn't sure if I wanted bucket seats but we brought our car seats with us to test drive cars and there was more room with the bucket seats than three across the middle row.

  • I just got the Chevy Equinox this weekend and was impressed with how well two rear-facing car seats fit into the back. Also the cargo space in the back is larger than I expected. I know you're on #3, but how many car seats do you need to accommodate? I echo what @ForeverEverAfter asked, can you get narrower car seats? If you want to avoid a larger vehicle, you could potentially find a better combination of seats to fit your kids in any vehicle. You should check out carseatsforthelittles on Instagram, they may be able help you determine what would best meet your needs.

That's funny lol the in floor coolers so come in handy for extra clothes and blankets and stuff... I should try hiding things in them!
  • Hubby and I both drive jeep wranglers. He has a two door, and I have the four door. The car seat does fit nicely in the back seat for mine, but it would be insanely difficult to get one in and out of his. the seats in mine fold down flat, and it's super convenient for my dogs. They are our first children and are who we originally bought the larger vehicle for. Haha. I love it.
  • Fellow MDX devotee here.  Gosh I love that car.  However, we are expecting twins, which will be kids #3&4.  I don't want the older two climbing over the carseats in the second row to get to the third row.  And with the third row in use, where would I put the double stroller?!  So...sadly I am saying good bye to my beloved MDX, today, actually, and we'll be getting a Honda Odyssey.  Hubby drives an Infiniti FX35, which we also love, but similar to your RDX, it won't fit the whole family.  But we are going to stick with it and a mini-van and see how that goes.

I have a new Toyota Highlander and we love it! It's probably just a little bigger than the MDX. It can seat 7-8. The middle row has the option of removing the middle part and turning it into two bucket seats, making it a lot easier to get to the back row. (And making it similar to a minivan, but still an SUV). I would say the only negative about it is that if you have the back row up, it takes your storage down to practically nothing. But you do have the option of putting up only half of the back row, and with that you can fit a stroller folded there, but whatever kid is back there won't have a ton of room! I would definitely recommend the Highlander! And it's at a similar price point to the MDX, so that's a plus!

Another plus is that it goes extremely well in the snow! I don't know what part of the country you're in but we live in WV and we have pretty rough winters. Last year we had around 2 ft of snow and my Highlander didn't slip or get stuck a single time. My coworker who drives an MDX was not that lucky!

This! I have a T&C and LOVE it. The sliding doors are super handy, we only use the bucket seats, the third row stays folded down and there's plenty of room for anything. Its also tons of fun to fill it with blankets and go to the drive in movies. Never thought I was a minivan person, but its great!
  • Thanks all for your feedback. Some of these vehicles we test drove recently and didn't love, some I've never heard of and will definitely check out! My older 2 are in boosters now so maybe it's just reconfiguring to make it work. The seats are big enough in the 3rd row but the legroom is minimal. I once sat back there and had to sit sideways.

I think my MDX will work for us for a few more years but definitely will have to start looking for DH's new vehicle.

We are in NJ so we do get a lot of snow. Need something with 4 wheel drive.

    Thanks all!!

  • I have a subaru outback sport... I love it. Seats 5, and we will soon be a family of 5... So it's tight, but will do the job.

Not to be in your business, but if his car will be paid off next year, yall should just keep his car and use your car as the family vehicle. The dealer won't give you anything for a trade in. I just traded in my BMW 128i that I was still financing for a 2015 328i lease. And I am so in love with my new car, but we will only have 2 kids after this baby. Hubby has 2 door Honda Accord.

I have a Nissan Versa and the back seat is huge. My parents had a Mazda 3 and the back seat was actually big enough to fit me (6 ft tall) my sister (5'10) and my brother in his bulky car seat. The Versa's back seat is actually bigger than that. Plus it's $25 to fill up and the tank lasts me 2 weeks with a 30 minute commute to work 4 x a week. Hubbs has a BMW 225i coupe- which is a terrible idea due to the fact that it's a 2 door with 2 very narrow bucket seats in the back. Needless to say, my car will be the primary until we're in a front facing seat.
  • My DH refuses to drive a mini van so we ended up with a Tahoe which we both love- it's basically a "truck" version of a mini van

I have a Ford Flex and it's my favourite vehicle ever. I sometimes wonder if I'll ever be convinced to drive anything else. It also is amazing on winter roads!
  • I have a 2014 Dodge Dart. It has a suprisingly roomy backseat! Purchased this car exactly a year ago today never thinking there will be a car seat in it!!!
  • I have a 2012 GMC Acadia and love it! The third row is bigger than many SUV we looked at. Middle row is two bucket seats. I'm sure we'll move on to a minivan at some point but right now I'm happy with the Acadia.
  • We have an F150 extended cab and it fits all three car seats with room for groceries on the floor in the back. We looked at mini vans and SUVs but we live in an isolated town in Canada and a van won't cut it in terms of where we like to go or what we need. We have 7 months of winter here so being able to get around in snow is a must.

    Another fan of the MDX!

We will have 3 in the back with this LO but only the infant seat, a booster and a super skinny butt on the oldest. I think we are going to be able to do it comfortably because of the skinny butt on the oldest :-)
  • We have a Toyota tacoma quad cab and love it... DD is in a large 5 point seat still (age 4) and there is still plenty of room for baby. If we do upgrade down the road we will go up to a tundra. DH has an acura integra, but is in no way a family car. Its built for fun not family.
  • I drive a Jeep Wrangler Sahara :-)
  • We currently have an Audi A4 but are thinking it might get tight with baby and dog. Looking at the Highlander and Volvo XC 90. Anyone ever have a Volvo? I'm new to that brand.
