Diaper genie -- worth it?

Any second time mamas out there.... Are diaper genies worth it? Or just throw the diapers away outside each day?

Re: Diaper genie -- worth it?

  • We use cloth now but with our first we just threw them out. It wasn't a huge deal and I didn't want something else in the room and to have to buy refills because I'm lazy (plus it seemed like kinda a waste).
Some people swear by them though!

  • We got a hand-me-down diaper genie from my sister-in-law. I don't know if I would have bought one on my own or not. We have a two story house and honestly it was pretty useful in the beginning when baby would poop a lot (we only use it for poopy diapers) so we weren't constantly taking poo bags out to the trash. Now that our daughter's older (13.5 months), she doesn't often wake up dirty so most of her poop changes happen downstairs once she's up for the day anyway. We'll move it into new baby's room and it'll probably be useful for awhile there. Plus it's nice not to have stinky diapers sitting in the trash can outside in the dead of summer, and I guess nice not to have to take them out there when it's freezing cold every day in winter too. Is it a necessity? Absolutely not, but did it help us some? Yep.
  • I hated mine.. If you didn't keep on it and make sure to clean it regularly, and change it when it's close to full, it would make the whole room stink.

This time I'll be taking them out every day. Cause seriously. Nothings worse than a three day old, smelly poop diaper.

I like ours. We have one in our daughters room now, when baby comes we will have one downstairs too. It's convenient and def keeps the smells at bay. To each their own tho.
  • I skipped it the first time but think I'm going to get one this time around.
I have a 2 story house and can't always run the diaper out right away. Now that DD eats real food her diapers are awful :( Breastmilk poo doesn't smell so bad so when we were buying the rest of the things we needed that we didn't get at showers I didn't think we needed it.

Never got one. We just tossed it in the trash outside

  • We have one but honestly with the number of diapers we went through each day we were having to empty it every 36 hours anyway. Plus, the refill reloads are expensive and do not last long. Between the extra cost and the fact that we were having to empty every day anyway, it's become an unused item in our house.
  • Yes worth every penny of it if you are doing disposable diapers

  • I'm glad we have it. Our garbage can is in the garage. It gets hot in there and I'm not interested in smelling warmed up toddler shit every time I go out. It does smell a bit when the lid opens for a second but it certainly doesn't stink up the room. We are probably going to get another one because plastic absorbs smells that won't go away even after cleaning with bleach. So figure replacing at 2 years or get a stainless steel one. But no matter what, it needs to have a foot pedal. Trust me. Your welcome.

    Anniversary

  • Love ours! Never had a problem with it stinking and hate walking all the way to the outside trash every poopy diaper.
  • We put the poopy diapers in our kitchen trash can and don't have a problem with it stinking up the house. I'm so glad we didn't buy a diaper genie!

I like it. Totally helpful especially in the beginning when you go through a ton of diapers. Now that dd is older and poops are obnoxious smelling, we only use it for #1s and take the #2s outside ASAP.

Edit: mine was a hand me down as some pp said too.

Hmm tricky one - i'd say yes and no. As people said in the beginning it's a godsend but now my daughters older (13 months) it fills up so quickly and I am so lazy / busy that sometimes it sits with a couple of nappies next to it for a day or two (grose I know) but I think the alternative if having to go to the bin outside every time would be far worse. IMO putting poopy nappies in our kitchen bin didn't work (worst idea of mine ever) the kitchen constantly stank of something horrendous - not nice when preparing food! So yes I'd probably get one :)
  • FTM and we are getting one. Our trash is put out once a week, but we don't have a bin for garbage here. All of our trash is put out on the curb in large black trash bags. We would probably fill 2 a week with diapers and we don't have a bin, so they have to sit in the house, or the garage. I'm hoping it helps alleviate the smell just a little. In my situation I feel it's a necessity.
  • Eh I would only get one for an area that would be a pain to take the trash out every day. For example, we mainly changed DS downstairs and put diapers in regular trash and took it out when it was full. But on occasion I would take diapers off upstairs in his nursery. So it was nice to have a diaper genie up there so I didn't have to run downstairs or worry about taking it out all the time. Hth.
  • It really depends. My sister never used hers because she never used her changing table, she just changed the kids on the floor in the living room (she just used a portable changing pad/ diaper caddy). If you do that, then there is no use for a diaper genie. I got her diaper genie and we use it all the time. The way we save on refills is that we only put poopy diapers in there and put the pee ones in regular trash. Once my daughter got a little older she thought it was a fun game to throw away her "pee pee" diapers in the garbage like a big girl. I will say that now that she is older the diapers can't be in there as long, they get stinkier a lot faster. Overall, I like it but it really depends on the person.
  • Just a little tid bit for y'all. You actually dont have to buy the bag refills, keep the blue ring and use regular trash bags. It saves a ton of money in the long run, the bag refills are expensive.

This is exactly what I do! So much cheaper!!!
  • Anyone have another system that works? Like a separate can just for diapers?

FTM - My mom had one but she never used it. So, I'm just curious.
  • I like it for early on when you end up changing 2-3 diapers in the middle of the night. Who wants to run outside with poopy diapers at night? You could probably go with a regular garbage can instead though
  • Thanks ladies! You all hit on the pros and cons of why I was debating if it would be worth it or not. The genie itself isn't too expensive, but seems like the refills would really add up. My friends all had mixed opinions on it too - for some it was a must have & for others they didn't use it. Guess ill go ahead & register for one :)
  • Isn't there a different brand that you use your own bags?

  • We have an ubbi which uses regular trash bags and it's so much better. My sister has a diaper genie and the nursery always smells like a shitty diaper (maybe she just doesn't take the trash out often?)
  • I was told to register for an ubbi as well. All my friends with kids advised against the diaper genie.
  • Never used ours. It was kind of a pain.

  • Not a STM+ BUT I nannied for a long time and am still in childcare. Diaper Genie was awesome after I finally figured out how to unload it and stuff. I also nannied for a family who did not have genie and it was honestly annoying because of how many diapers this kid went through and if it's not trash day you're just laying bags of feces out to bake in the sun or wherever you put them. I live in Texas so anywhere outside is no Bueno.
  • I used it for my first and we had to clean it once a month because the smell was so bad and was just absorbed into the can. I trashed it before he was potty trained. For DS2 I used the arm and hammer diaper bags where you put each poopy diaper in a bag and put that in your regular trash can. This was so much better, the house never smelled. Plus I also had them on hand so when I went to someones house and he pooped. But, last week I was at the dollar store and they have there own poop bags. I bought two boxes and they seem to be working great, and they are only $1.00 for 75 bags. Anyone who uses arm and hammer knows this is a amazing deal.

  • For me it's a must have!! I love love love it! Ours never smells, or anything and is easy to use. My dd's poop smells so so bad (I know all poop stinks but hers, eww!) and if I didn't have the diaper genie I would be taking each individual diaper out to the trash. No thank you! Each bag probably lasts 4-7days, but you can get a box of 25 for like 15 bucks. That lasts like 4+ months... So I think it's worth it.
  • Great in the beginning. Wouldn't suggest once they start solids!
  • I registered for the Dekor Plus bc you can use it with or without the refills...also the top is larger to fit bigger diapers in. I had a long conversation with the sales person at BBB. Has anyone used the Dekor Plus before? Hopefully it works well otherwise I'm not opposed to switching to another brand.
  • I have a diper genie that I will reuse, once the baby poop starts stinking the diper genie goes outside, we just take dirty dipers out everytime.
  • Oh and I use the cheap 13 gallon trash bags in stead of buying refills, saves a lot of money.
  • I honestly have never heard of someone not liking their diaper genie! This I news to me! (Except my MIL. she has no idea how to use it... Open, put diaper in, close... How is this hard?!).
  • Absolutely worth it!  I have one downstairs and upstairs.  I've been using them for over 5 years now and contains the smell great!  You don't want to have to go to the garbage constantly and have your home smell of poo all day long.

I wouldn't buy one (again - I bought one with my first baby). If your baby is breastfed, their poop really doesn't smell. I probably could've thrown it into a regular garbage can every time. If you take your garbage out every other day or so they won't smell up your house. Then we used cloth diapers once he was big enough to fit them well (before he started solids), and theres a whole different system for those!
  • No!
Unless you cant smell. I refused to buy one bc I've visited homes that used it & you could smell it. Yuck!
  • We like ours so much we bought a second one to put in the garage for the dog baggies after our walks. We live in a warm climate so putting stinky stuff in the garage would otherwise get very smelly.

Agree! We used it for the first few months once the baby slowed down with the pooping lol. Once they became more regular, only going a couple times per day, we put it away.
