Baby wearing.

I tried to see if there was a group already created, but didn't see one. Is anyone here a baby wearer or plans on baby wearing? We are thinking this will be ideal for our new little one, but I would love to hear what others think. Some things I would like to know, which is your favorite carrier, do you find breast feeding in them doable, is your partner on board, how old/heavy can you carry for?

Re: Baby wearing.

  • I'm planning on wearing but know nothing about it yet lol so I'm following this thread

  • I have a Boba 3G (soft structured carrier) I got when my son was a newborn (dec '12). He's now 30lbs and my husband can still carry him in it. He's too heavy for me though now. I used to carry him in it for Target trips and such. I never nursed him in it though. My husband would carry him for longer trips like going to the zoo. I have some back problems and would get too tired if I wore him on long trips.

  • I'm planning to baby wear too, especially since I love being outdoors and baby wearing is so much more practical than a buggy on rougher ground.

I've had friends advise not to buy the fabric wrap baby carriers as they are just pieces of very overpriced fabric you could make yourself, so I may give that a try (with advice on technique from friends) but was also planning to get a more structured carrier for when baby is a bit bigger or longer walks.

I think it's a lovely way to keep baby close and cozy!
  • I don't know if you can search but there was a post a while ago where there's a lot of good recommendations. I just can't find it.

I'm planning on carrying and have an ergo.
  • We baby wear with out two other babies (2 and 1). We love our Tula, but we also love our ring sling. Tula works better for longer trips, while I think a RS works better for shorter trips. If you're in Facebook, look to see if there's a local Facebook group for your area. We have one in my area and they're awesome. They hold regular meetings where moms can go and try out different carriers to see what works best for them before buying their own and so on. Definitely recommend looking for one!
  • We love baby wearing!! We started out with the Moby Wrap, which is a long long piece of think fabric that you wrap and tie around yourself... Watch a video on it and practice once or twice.. Easy peasy. We have a ergo that I personally don't care much for but I'm in love with my Sakurra Bloom ring sling and can not wait to put baby in it... I still carry my 24 pound toddler in it! A friend of mine swears by her Tula, though I don't have one.

  • Okay I can't find the other posts so I will retype.

For newborns In love ring slings and stretchy wraps (the moby or boba wrap).

For older babies and toddlers. I like the ERGO but not as much as I like the Lillebaby or Tula. I'm also a fan of woven wraps but the learning curve is crazy.

Make sure to try to get a very specific fabric recommendation from them. I've tried to sew two. My first was so thick once it was on that it was too hot, hard to tie, and impractical. My second was too stretchy and couldn't hold up even my 8 pound newborn without sagging. And in the fabric store, I could see very little difference between the two.

I love my lillebaby for baby wearing.

Definitely going to baby wear. I did with my daughter but I only had a very generic, basic carrier and a ring sling. It was so nice because she could breast feed whenever she wanted and I always had both hands free. She used to fall asleep to the vacuum all the time while I was wearing her and cleaning. Now that I have a rambunctious toddler running around, having both hands free is a must and of course, anything to make breastfeeding easier, I'm all for it lol. I'm looking at much nicer wraps this time. I think they'll be a lot more comfortable than what I had last time. I'd love to try the mobi and the tula. They seem to be more what I'm looking for. My daughter never liked the ring sling for some reason. But I still have it just in case this one does.
  • I have a moby and a beco. DS1 tolerated the moby but DS2 hated it. I really like the beco, it distributes the weight very evenly on my hips and is very comfortable. I could never breast feed with them in the wrap but I think its because I have large breasts and they just never seemed to line up right. With the beco I used it for DS 1 as a backpack carrier when he was around 30 lbs and it was great, he loved it too for when his little legs were getting tired.
  • We are a big Tula family here (and own several), they are so comfortable and useful! And cute :) I am very excited to get into wrapping with this next baby. I was a bit intimidated by it with DS for the longest time and now he's big and squirmy and the wraps we've done with him haven't been great. A soft, stretchy wrap for a newborn is super useful, I also plan to use my wovens with the new baby too.

I definitely second the recommendation to find a local baby wearing group. The one on my area meets once a month and has a huge lending library that you can check carriers out from for a month at a time before buying your own. And if you attend meetings they'll teach you to BW and help you troubleshoot any problems.

  • I am planning on wearing. I did some with my youngest and it was great! Super helpful at the store and whatnot. I'm keeping my eye out for discounted Tulas or similar.

  • I've found from my informal survey that if you plan on baby wearing for leisurely strolls and light activity then the baby wraps are ok. Personally I've never seen an older infant (6mon+) in a fabric carrier because they are bigger and wiggling. I wouldn't recommend them because it isn't a good "all around" carrier.

I think if you are planning on being very active i.e. Hiking, running after a toddler, always on your feet, then the Ergo Baby is the one to use. It is by far the most popular one in my community.

For a first time user, some tips:
*Practice before putting your baby in it.
*dont expect your baby to necessarily love it off the bat. It's best to put the baby in and go - start moving, etc

    1. Lots of people wear even bigger toddlers in woven wraps. They're very sturdy and woven specifically to be able to hold that much weight. So that's false. Lots of people prefer wrapping to SSCs and do use them as their main carriers, though not everyone does (SSCs are generally easier to use for newbies).

    2. Ergo Baby is
one great option, but not the only one. There are also Tulas, Becos, Lenny Lambs, MGGs, and others are all great.

  • I used the beco Gemini carrier and will for this lo too. I never breastfed in it, so I can't answer that. But it really grows with your kid. I could probably still put my toddler in it if he would sit still and enjoy it as a backpack carrier.
  • Can you use a lillebaby with a newborn - it looks like the site says from 7lbs up but is that realistic ?
  • I love baby wearing, makes life so much easier. We had the mei tai. We didn't want to start too pricey in case it didn't work out. We only did it for about 9 months, after that DS, didn't enjoy it, he would cry and try to wiggle off. Breastfeeding was a breeze did I had a good shirt. Def baby wearing this time around again. :)

  • I used and loved both the Boba Wrap and the Ergo with my first. The Boba was great when she was newborn-6months. Then I switched to the Ergo because it was easier when shopping.(I know there are a lot of people who use the wraps into toddlerhood). I personally didn't baby wear past 18months because I have buldging disks in my back but I wish I could of done it longer. It was so great to just carry DD and she would nap and just be content. I breastfed in the Boba but not the Ergo.
  • I am a baby wearing momma.
I own a Ergo ( I will need to buy an infant insert)
I also have a diy Mai Tai (I can never remember the correct spelling)
I also have a Toddler Tula and I want to buy a standard size tula.

Id like to look into wraps for this baby, but Im not sure if I will get in to that.

I have a ring sling which I really love. It's up to 35 lbs too so I still use it when going out with my daughter instead of dealing with the stroller in crowds. Pretty sure you can bf w it but I never did it, I always sat down and took baby out.

I'm sure you probably could but I preferred to wrap my son when he was a newborn. It's kind of like swaddling them. Last time I used a sleepy wrap which is basically like a moby and it worked great. This time I'm going to try some woven wraps.

Also I was able to breastfeed my son in his wrap but it was tricky so I didn't do it very often.

  • Toddler in a fabric wrap aka woven very comfortable.

It's possible and do able, I however don't find it comfortable for the newborn.
  • I want to baby wear, but my SO said he that's what he has arms for and he thinks it's lazy. This is his first, obviously. I'm clueless to all the methods and brands so thanks to all PPs.

  • I'm planning on going with carriers. I want to get a beco gemini but I also want to try the boba wrap. All moms should read this article, I think, when making a choice about carrier. I found it when one of my best friends was pregnant and it made a huge impact on my decision of what kind of carrier to register for.
  • Ask him how he will chop food with only one hand. Haha I love my husband, and he said the same thing, until we were babysitting for a friend and the only way the little wouldn't cry was if they were being held. They had an ergo and I strapped it in him. And then I had to run to the store to grab something. Now he is all for carries like that but is still hesitant about wraps and slings.

  • We baby wear and love it. I'll be wearing my
17 month old and a newborn come February. One in front and one in back. :-)
Baby wearing 101 on Facebook is A great resource for info.
  • Plan on getting something for 2.0 when he/she's tiny and then we have a standard Tula. Also plan to get another standard and/or a toddler Tula.

Moby, ring sling or a wrap. I've never used a wrap before so idk how to tie it or anything... Makes me a little nervous

I love my Moby wrap for when baby was itty bitty. I switched to a Boba 4G when my son was 6 months old. I have no complaints about either. I am just so excited to wear a squishy newborn in the Moby again. :)

I have been babywearing since 1993.  I got a ring sling from my LLL leader (this was before the internet)  for my now 22 yo.  I personally have or have used about d every type and ethnicity of babywearing stuff out there. (except an Amauti, I really want one, too! specially with a February baby.  Though I do have a Kindercoat that I plan to wear while pregnant.)  Personally I LOVE my woven wraps.  They are just so versatile and lovely and I can carry my 7yo as well as a newborn in them.  And while they are spendy, there are ways to get them cheaper.  My first one I got was an unpopular Girasol I got on ebay for $50.  And yes, you can DIY one out of 5-6 yards of fabric, you can't just use any fabric.  They have to have diagonal stretch and a looser weave.  I have also DIY'ed about every type of babywearing carrier if people want to do a sew along.  I was thinking of making myself an ABC, a ring sling and a SSC this time.  I also have a KK adjustable fleece pouch that my girls got nailpolish on, that I want to replace.  I just need to find some good (not JoAnns) fleece.

  • I want to, but found out I am having twins and wonder if I still can.
  • I think babywearing will be great for me. The ring slings and the tie wraps intimidate me and I know that my husband won't want anything to do with them. I'm really drawn to the idea, but I also know that we will be working on very little sleep lots of "ack! what the heck are we doing?!?" when we bring home a newborn. So with that in mind I'm planning on getting an Ergo with the newborn insert. It's spendy for us but it seems fairly idiot-proof. Also I spoke with a Mom who was larger framed like my husband and I and also had back problems and she loved her 2 Ergos.

You definitely can! I recommend a group on FB called "Tandem Babywearing." You can wear one in front, one in back, or one on each hip in a ring sling... there are tons of options! I have a friend with twins who LOVES here TwinGo carrier, which is a soft structured carrier- she can use one or both and she loves how comfortable it is.

  • FTM interested in baby wearing.

    Three questions:

    1. At what age did you start baby wearing?

    2. If you baby wear, where do you keep the essentials you need (diapers, bottles, whatever)? Or at this point do you just opt for the stroller?

    3. Best carrier under $100, go. I need a new car, I can't break the bank.

    1. I can't remember exactly, but I think 2 or 3 months old in our Tula?

    2. A diaper bag. I like to have the stroller for longer trips like the zoo and such, but I always also had the Tula for when he needed to snuggle and go to sleep. You can't deny how convenient it is to shove all of your stuff into the bottom of the stroller. haha

    3. Join Babywearing On a Budget on FB! It's a buy/sell/trade group for carriers and they have to be $100 or less. It kind of depends on what you want and when you're going to wear. You can get a Moby for $50 or less on Amazon and that's great for wrapping little teeny babies, though there's a learning curve. For something with a little more structure, maybe a Infantino Mei Tai? I'm sure others will have good suggestions too. The Ergo/Beco/Lillebaby SSCs are all around $120 retail, I believe.

Dd was 3 or 4 months we used an infantino carrier then at 6 months or so- we used a mei tai.
We got our first Tula when she turned one- wish I had it way before that

If I need to bring a bunch of stuff I bring a stroller OR h wears a backpack
There are lots of standard carriers you can get like the infantino mei tai which you Can find for 25 on sale
