GTKY- Why is your city/state AWESOMe?

Hi All,
I have been following my whole pregnancy, but the Bump app finally let me post today! After many deletions and signing in and out, I feel very excited to finally get to participate.

I am a STM with a 1.5 year old daughter. I am due January 13 with this little one. I work as a Speech-Language Pathologist in the schools and can't wait for my mid year baby snuggle break!

Anyways I thought it would be fun to do a regional GTNY. Specifically what makes your city/state great? Is it the food, attractions, weather? I want to know!

I am from Wisconsin and I am going to go with the old stand by: CHEESE. You can't beat squeaky cheese curds straight off the production line, as well as any variety of Monterey Jack you can think of... Spinach artichoke, dill, ranch, buffalo, olive... The list could go on forever.

  • Ann Arbor, Michigan! (originally from san diego - came here for pharmacy school and then met my husband here so I stayed).  My husband sends me the reasons michigan is the best state ever all the time!

I'm learning to love it. The best thing about ann arbor, michigan is the FOOTBALL! :)  my DH and I got married on the 50 yard line of the Big House (the university of michigan football stadium).

I'm originally from WI, but have been living in MN since college and recently introduced DD to cheese curds (the non-deep fried version) and she fell in love, just like her momma. We will definitely be making a stop our next time in WI.

  • Welcome, great Intro! Love the Question.

I am from Ontario and when I am not pregnant I love our Ontario wines! Especially the whites! I'm a big supporter of supporting local! We have some amazing food counties in Ontario, represented at some Amazing Farmers Markets but my biggest pleasure is the wine!

Vinelands Estates, Fielding, Ravine, Rosewood, Chateau de Charmes.... I could go on and on.

I live in Northern New Jersey...

The best part of where I live is that I'm 45 minutes from New York City, yet also only an hour and 15 minutes from the jersey shore! We just spent the day at the beach yesterday. :)

And since my life revolves around food right now: bagels, pizza, and DISCO FRIES!!!

...Pure Michigan :) I grew up in Northern Wisconsin so I have been the the UP a bunch but I have never ventured to the lower.
  • Well, New York. There's so many many things. My favorite, and what I miss most when I go anywhere else, is that you can get ANYTHING pretty much 24/7. Can't fuck with that. Also, I really love love love going to world class muscial performances, ballet, and opera. I did not grow up going but I have grown to love it as an adult. For my birthday this year we will finally go the Nutcracker, I'm so excited!

I LOVE the theater! I am huge big city chicken and always think I'm going to get lost or killed (thanks law and order) but I would love to go to New York to see some of the shows. All we get her is the traveling Broadway but I doubt it is the same.
  • @missperky Alaska! Some people want the sand and sun vacations, but I'm dying to go to Alaska! That looks so beautiful!

  • @alandaim NY is NOTHING to fear! Hopstop (app) is your best friend and will get you anywhere, I've been going into the city alone and in groups since I was 14 and have spent many nights walking the street at 4/5 am, never had a problem! As long as you have common sense you'll have a blast! For what it's worth, the shows are top notch. Especially the high end stuff. Worth it.
  • I went on a cruise to Alaska when I was a teenager and I LOVED it! So beautiful. I would sneak off by myself in the port towns and pretend I was rich at the jewelry stores and get to try on all these crazy rainbow-colored gemstones. Seems like it would be a neat place to raise kids.

Fun! I haven't been super active in non-PGAL threads myself but I wanna branch out and get to know new people too - thanks for starting this!

I'm in Massachusetts and I love my state/New England in general. We're first in education AND fried clams (other NE ladies can fight me on the second one, but the first one's a fact). I love that I can drive in any direction and it won't take too long to get to the beach, the mountains, lakes, cities, or a whole other state.

More specifically I currently live in Somerville, birthplace of Marshmallow Fluff. If you're into that. :D
We took a family trip to New England when I was younger and my favorite was Massachusetts! My husband received a job offer to move out to the Boston subs, and I must say it was tempting. I would love to be close to the mountains and ocean (Mmm seafood)!
  • I'm originally from NYC, so all the yes to pizza, bagels etc. Now I live in California though, so I'll say having the beach, the mountains, and the redwoods all within 10 minutes is awesome. There's so many good outdoorsy things to do here! But now that I'm having a LO I'm actually getting really homesick! I want to be closer to my siblings and their kiddos.

  • I'm from Ontario...I just got home from watching the gold medal men's soccer game for the PanAm games! It was an awesome experience that was just a few blocks from my house!

I agree with PP when not preo our Ontario wines are devine. I also love all of our fresh Ontario grown produce. The fact rhat I can drive an hour and be in Toronto (provinces capital and most known city in Canada), drive six hours and be in the Nations capitol (Ottawa) or just drive three hours north and be in beautiful cottage country. Also I'm only 45 mins from the Buffalo boarder.

As for all you Wisconsin folk, have you tried poutine yet? Fries, beef gravy (brown gravy) and cheese curds? You'll never go back to just regular fries and gravy. Deeelicious!

I live in a small town a couple hours north of Seattle (and who doesn't love Seattle??). The weather is wonderful year round. Not to hot, not too cold. We have everything you could want to do! Cliff jumping, hiking, skiing and snowboarding, shopping, casinos, you name it! Plus it's beautiful and living on an island means there's always water wherever you look!

ETA: also we have tons of trees! It doesn't rain a lot like the rest of Washington because our island is projected by the Olympic mountain range.

    What are disco fries??

This is making me want to do a tour of USA just for the food.

My husband and I just had an argument the other day on the proper way to say pountine, we googled it and I guess we were both wrong. I thought you said it like "pon" ( sounds like the pon in pond ) and "teen" as in a teenager. Either way I love fries and gravy but the thought of that plus cheese curds makes me want to explode with joy!

Edit: not specific, sounded like I loved something I had never had... Although it could happen :)

Welcome! I live in Alaska about 30 miles outside of Anchorage.
Alaska is absolutely gorgeous and full of wildlife. This picture was taken Friday about 75 degrees out. I work at a day camp in the summer. The kiddos were playing in the mud and then washing off in a glacier water lake.

I loooove Alaska!! So jealous! I went to ninilchik on a mission trip once and I'm dying to go back.

I live in Cincinnati and it is only getting more and more awesome. I can't mention Cincinnati though without mentioning Goetta. Nothing like some Goetta and maple syrup, mmmm.
  • @BrieJolly I've wanted to try poutine for years! I've yet to see them on a menu, though... Maybe I'll just need to take a trip up to Canada sometime this pregnancy, just for poutine!

I'm from MN so I'll say the obvious, Mall of America, tax free shopping on clothes, can't beat that. I also love the northern part of the state (the North Shore), it's absolutely gorgeous.

  • @alandaim I pronounce it Poo - teen in Quebec (French speaking province) Poo-tin

@vvitchhazel it's worth the trip! Only if you are close to the boarder though :-p your cheese is probably better at home than some places here. Some places cheap out and just use shredded cheese. Not the same!

I'm originally from a suburban town about 45 minutes east of San Francisco. We have delicious sourdough bread, the Golden Gate, Alcatraz, Fisherman's Wharf, cable cars, etc

It's also reaaaalllly easy to make. The toughest part is finding the cheese curds. But once you do, just deep fry some fries, put lots of cheese on top, and then smother it in gravy. Voila! There's a place in my town that has vegetarian poutine that's soooo good that nobody even realizes it's vegetarian...

I live in British Columbia and my province is awesome because it's beautiful! I live by the ocean, surrounded by trees and mountains. Plus, my town has a really relaxed, easy-going lifestyle, where people can wear and do whatever they want without being (too) judged about it. Who wears suits and heels to work? Not this town!

DH is from Cincy (we live in Cbus). I'd never heard of goetta until I met him. I would have preferred to keep it that way

I went to school in the Bay Area and I also think it seems like such a great place to have kids. And I weirdly love Alcatraz - did you ever see Eddie Izzard's Alcatraz video?

"It's got a big thing at the back that looks like a monster but no... IT'S ALCATRAZ."

I've never been to Cincinnati, but one of our favorite family meals growing up was Cincinnati chili. My dad special orders seasoning packs and everything. From the look on my DH's face the first and only time he ate it, I can tell it is an acquired taste. Mr. Google tells me Goetta is a sausage and I would be all over that!

@katharinerisk I lived in the Dayton area for a few years! DH tried Goetta, but I never did.

  • I'm from Upstate NY.  I love the fact that I live in a state where we get to experience Fall weather.  Apple picking, the leaves turning, and the cool weather is perfect.  The Adirondacks (gorgeous hiking and mountain trails) are about 1 hour 1/2 away and it's beautiful to go up there any time of year.  As cold as our winters can be, I don't think I'd trade the snowy winters during the holiday season for anything. We are not really famous for anything in my city for anything in particular, expect we have some pretty die hard, dedicated, college sports fans here.
