10 weeks and couldn't hear HB on doppler

edited July 2015 in 1st Trimester
According to the date of my LMP I'm 10wks, 2 day. We went this morning for my OB appt and to try to hear the HB on doppler. Dr. had already said we might not be able to hear it yet, but I'm let down because he couldn't find it. I had someone tell me a couple weeks ago that they shouldn't have trouble hearing it because I'm so thin. Dr. was going to just wait the 4 weeks until my next appt to try again, but I have a lot of anxiety (never taken anything for it, but probably need to) and when I told the OB I would probably drive myself nuts, he said I could come in earlier just to check for HB and he'd send me for an U/S if we still can't hear it because we might be off on the dates. We'll go back in 2 1/2 weeks to try again. The earliest possible date of conception would put me at 8 weeks, 5 days. Has anyone else experienced this and can you offer any words of encouragement?

Re: 10 weeks and couldn't hear HB on doppler

  • I was 10 days off my conception date. I had an early ultrasound and thought something was wrong because we couldn't see the baby or hb. Turns out I was only 5w1d. We went back 5 days later and saw/heard HB and all was fine. I would have bet money I was further along than I was, so it can definitely happen.

  • My OB couldn't hear the Hb on a Doppler when I was 12 weeks during my last pregnancy. It wasn't until 14 weeks that he had no trouble finding it.
  • I was only 10 weeks when I heard my 2 child yet 14 1/2 when my first was picked up and besides every pregnancy is unique may jus been your position or maybe the machine wasnt sensitive enough to pick it up either way thats great your dr is going to check again so fingers crossed n wishing you the best of luck!!!
  • It is common not to hear it that early, mostly because it takes a lot of time and patience to be able to find a baby that small, that is bouncing around and being all squirrely in there. I pick up the HB at home weeks before they are able to get it at the office, because I have more time to spend looking for it at home. Try not to worry.

  • Thank you all. I know I was warned beforehand, but being someone who over-worries about everything it's really hard to not see only the bad possibilities. I almost wish he had just waited until the next appt in the first place since it seems to be such a long shot.
  • I went this week at 9 weeks 6 days and they couldn't find the hb. I have panic disorder so I know where your coming from. My doctor tried the same thing told me to come back in 2 weeks and she would try again..I told her I couldn't and wouldn't wait so she scheduled an ultrasound which was today 10 weeks 2 days the baby was there, growing perfect and hb was 188 bpm! I know how hard it is to stay positive when your worried all the time but try to be patient (I wasn't lol) you'll hear it at your next visit we are just to early :)
  • This happened to me at 11 weeks dr. Couldn't find heartbeat. But she said that was pretty common. It showed up in the us though and ds is now 2 years old. Don't worry it is very common so early not to hear.
  • Being thin has nothing to do with it. It has to do the fact that your uterus is still a pelvic organ until 12ish weeks. Who ever said this, ignore them regarding medical advice, that are very wrong and do not understand basic anatomy and pregnancy.
    Thank God for Raid.

  • What does being thin have to do with being able to hear baby's heart beat with a Doppler ? Most time you won't hear it until around 12 weeks when the baby moves up out of your pelvis. With my first I didn't hear his heart beat till around 13 weeks, with this baby I heard his at almost 10 weeks. My dr told me this baby is up further because it's my 2nd pregnancy. It all goes by where your baby is positioned.
  • Being thin does give you a better chance of hearing the baby's heart beat when you are earlier in your pregnancy. My doctor told me that the only reason she was even going to attempt finding the Heartbeat at nine weeks was because I was on the thinner side. I'm assuming it's because there is less fat on the abdomen which makes it easier for the doppler to find the heart beat?
  • Your doctor is right, it is too early. He forewarned you, and that is what happened. You are lucky to be able to go in just for Doppler in 2 1/2 weeks. Most doctor's offices do not even attempt doppler until 12 weeks just for this reason.

    Precisely.

Also, even at 16 weeks both my babies "ran & hid" from the Doppler wand.
