Moms working in retail

I'm almost 18 weeks and started a full time retail job last week and I'm really struggling. It's pretty much 99% cleaning the store so I more feel like I have a full time cleaning job where I'm on my feet and bending and stretching all day which is not what I was expecting to sign up for.

Anyone else working/worked in retail while pregnant and how are/did you handling it?

Re: Moms working in retail

  • I do not work in retail, but I do work 4, 12 hour shifts a week as a PCA at my hospital. I spend the majority of that time on my feet, bending, lifting, pulling patients up in bed, pushing them in their beds or wheelchairs to testing, etc. Its pretty strenuous work. I just try my best to stay hydrated to avoid muscle cramps, eat solid, nutrient dense foods for energy and take breaks whenever I can even they are just for a few minutes to prop my feet up and rest my back. Ask if your employer offers light duty if you end up needing it medically or if the work is too rough on you later.

  • I would in retail and I feel your pain! If I'm not cleaning I'm standing on my feet serving customers or stacking shelves! It gets too much my legs get easily tired now and I get fed up! Even lighter duties tire me out- working in retail isn't easy.
I'd try explain to your boss that it's a bit too much because you're pregnant- maybe you can comprise and still do some cleaning but other lighter duties that help take the strain off things?
    hope all goes well!
  • If the lifting and bending becomes too much ask about working the register. You will still be standing all day but it might be a nice break. Make sure as pp said that you stay hydrated and rest up.
  • I've worked retail 8 years and when I found out I was pregnant I asked to be moved to a "slower" department. I'm having a hard time not doing things now. I'm sure soon I'll be thankful for it but it sucks right now for me.

Like some have said, ask them to accommodate your needs. If this is the first time you've worked retail though, what you're doing comes with the territory unfortunately so if it's not something you're used to it'll take time to adjust.

    Congrats on your baby
