Cord banking vs delayed cord cutting

Ok, I'm torn and wondering what others are thinking. We have planned on cord banking and already have the kit ready to take with us to the hospital. Today, I talked to my Dr about delayed cord cutting, which I've read all sorts of good things about. Unfortunately, she said it's very difficult to do both... that if she waits there often isn't enough blood left in the cord for banking. Anyone else struggling with the decision of which to prioritize? Or has anyone been successful balancing for both? She said she can wait about a minute and then cut, and there MAY be enough left for banking.

Re: Cord banking vs delayed cord cutting

  • We have decided on delayed cord cutting. It's actually what our hospital does no matter what unless you want to do cord banking.

  • My dr said we could do delayed and we are sending for donation, not banking for baby. She said if there is enough they will take it. If not, they will dispose of it. Would your doc be open to trying to see of there is enough after a delay for you to still bank? I would do the delay if I had to choose, I guess, but I hadn't thought about banking.

She's flexible to our wishes. I am thinking we'll wait about 1 - 1.5 minutes so baby gets most of those benefits, and hope there is enough for banking left over. Fingers crossed! :-)
  • I just looked into this. You can do both! Check out the CBR website where there is a great PowerPoint. Plus I just had a labor and delivery class with a very experienced l&d nurse of 30 years and she also said both can happen and often does at the hospital I plan on delivering at. They do consider delayed cord clamping as 1-3 minutes after with most of the benefits to baby in first minute. Sampling is easy. It's just a syringe put into the cord for a sample. DCC and saving cord blood can happen together. Hope that helps!! Good luck to all with your deliveries. My doctor also said that there is no problem!!
  • I just had a conversation with my dr about delayed cord cutting and he told me that there is no significant help when that is done unless the baby is born premature. He said baby's born full term healthy can be at risk of other issues like jaundice if done. He said he will do it but if the baby is healthy there is no real need.
  • Rachelsbaby - Yes, sorry to say that your Doctor is WAY, WAY behind the times on current medical research.  His view is the old school belief before they did studies that proved what Growingapepper says.  Plus they also found that it is that blood etc... from the placenta after the baby is born that stimulates the breathing reflex and the jaundice angle is just totally wrong.  Please consider doing some research into the subject on your own.

Additionally I have recently looked into cord blood banking and the information I found said that it's almost pointless and in almost every situation will not help your child.  I was not very encouraging.  I suggest others do their owner research into it as well.

  • Delayed cord clamping has immediate benefit and will be for sure used and costs nothing. Cord blood banking is expensive and may never be used/needed. It also may not be beneficial or work if/when you need it. I would delay cord clamping for sure.

Do some research because they have now come out and said that it only slightly(less then 1%) increases chances of jaundice. It benefits all babies term and premature.
  • Ditto what @growingapepper, @npierce19, and @nursekatie47 said. We're doing delayed cord clamping.

  • Cord blood and tissue banking isn't for everyone. I discussed it with my doctor and he thinks it's a good idea for my situation. He said he wishes he did it when he had kids. My husband and I are both in the medical field and we are not fools. I had a father die of lymphoma and a brother die as an infant of leukemia. I look at cord blood and tissue banking as an insurance policy nothing more. It's 280 bucks a year to store with an initial first year fee of 1250 bucks. That first fee includes collection, transport, processing and storage for the first year. The 280/year won't be charged until your child's first birthday and then yearly after that. The storage price is locked in for 18 years. If you look at it like an insurance policy, for me it doesn't seem too expensive to me especially in the light of my family history. There are breakthroughs everyday. This science is fascinating. Plus by saving tissue as well you have a lot of different cell lines that can be possibly used. There are a ton of areas they can be used for. Yes there is always a chance something could go wrong. Yes there are no guarantees in this world ever. Sometimes you get insurance and it still doesn't help you when you need it. I have peace of mind that I tried to be proactive and prepared for the worst in light of my family history. Not everyone has a family history like mine and it may not make sense for everyone to do it. These are just my opinions. I will be doing delayed cord clamping and cord blood and tissue banking. It's the right decision for me and my baby.

My OB had the same thoughts on cord banking. She said that it benefits if you have another child but rarely does it help your child it came from.
