Pets acting differently now than I'm pregnant. Anyone else?

Hey guys,

I did a search and browsed through the March 2016 Moms to see if there was already a pet post, but I couldn't find one, so I apologize if this is a duplicate thread.

I am 5 weeks pregnant today, but ever since yesterday (when we got a positive on the pee stick) the dogs have been following me around more than usual and trying to be more lovey. I know that they are pretty in tune with how I am feeling, but I just found it interesting. Every time I get up, even if it's just to go to the bathroom, they follow right behind me.

My cat has also been complaining more--as if I'm not giving her enough attention.

I am curious if the kiddos (pets) also know I'm pregnant. *shrugs* Just a thought to throw out there. Anyone else notice their animals behaving differently?

  • Our cats want nothing to do with me now that I'm pregnant.  I'm always looking for them wondering if they are okay.  So distant.

  • My dog and cat are being extremely clingy but only to me. My DH is starting to get jealous of all the extra love they have been giving me.
  • That was my first sign that I was pregnant with my second boy - our lab would not leave me alone.  Like I'd be sitting on the couch and he'd be up in my business.  He would stand at the side of the bed and pant in my face while I was sleeping.  Right before I tested he wouldn't let me sleep unless I was on the couch and he was snuggling with me.

  • Yes, we have 4 dogs and 3 cats. They are all constantly with me. My pit bull has been sleeping up on my pillows for about 2 weeks now(she is huge @ 100+lbs), and my chihuahua is chasing my kids away from me. Luckily my kids find it hilarious to act like they're going to sit next to me and then get chased off. But I think some of it is that the chihuahua had puppies a few months ago and has that mommy attitude still. I am literally covered by animals when I sleep.
  • Now I am feeling kind of bummed that my dogs aren't acting differently! One is a little attention wh*re all of the time, so that's no different, but the other two are business as usual.

  • I've got a Jack Russell Terrier. I'm 8 weeks along. She started becoming very protective of me last week. My BF had some friends in from out of town this past weekend that she hadn't been around before she was barking and growling at them if they got close to me but was fine if I wasn't around. She snapped at one friend the other day. She's ok with people that she's around a lot just sticks close to me.
  • I swear my dog knew I was pregnant with my first baby before I even did. He kept putting is head on my lap! He's less interested this go round.
  • I'm 5w +4d and my hand reared cat is even more clingy than normal. He is very bonded to me, I'm worried that that he is going to be miserable when baby comes along!
  • My 2 pups are definitely more clingy than normal, especially my chihuahua. He is normally cranky, but he can't get enough of me lately. I'm loving it!
  • My pups are always super affectionate so I cannot tell but since we are so early and I've miscarried a few times we aren't telling our kids yet. My two daughters and I were playing dr with their Doc mcstuffins kit and my oldest goes oh! You're okay just have a baby human in your belly! Lol!
  • I have ZERO doubt that pets can smell the hormonal change in our bodies.......I don't think that they automatically know that the hormonal change is due to pregnancy.

I also think that they can sense when we aren't feeling the greatest or are very tired.......which for most is the first trimester summed up.

  • We have an Aussie that I know realizes something is up. She has acted so different towards me the last few weeks. Hanging close, protective, etc. It cracks me up how they know!
  • My chihuahua has always been clingy/needy, so no difference there, but our lab has never followed me around like this. She lays by me while I put my makeup on in the morning and on the floor beside me when I'm on the couch, instead of on her bed or chair.  It's sweet.
  • Our German Shepherd will go crazy and bark if I go outside and leave him in, he has to follow me around in his protective stance... Have to admit I love it :)
  • I'm just missing my fur babies. Havn't seen them all week since we are on vacation.

My Pittie and Rottie are both shadow dogs so I generally don't get to leave the room without them. This unfortunately means I can't tell if they sense anything different or not. I do know they sense when my levels are dropping (type 1 diabetic) so I feel a little confident they can sense a change now. There's just no behavior change for them as they're already cling wrapped to me all the time.
  • Oh my gosh I'm so happy to hear these stories. I thought I was imagining things!
My dog (a yorkie that was 5 months old when husband and I started dating) always needs my attention so it's no different with her.
My husband's dog (a pitt that was 1 year when we started dating) is suddenly attached to my hip. He lays next to me on the couch, will follow me to my bedroom when I take a nap, even in the bathroom to take a shower!
My husband and I have been together for 8 years and now since getting my BFP his dog is all of a sudden my little shadow. Not complaining... love my fur babies!
  • My doggies know something is up. I have 3 and they are my shadows anyways, but the past couple weeks they check in with me more. Like "hey mom are you ok?" I imagine them thinking
  • I thought it was just my little spoiled brat...he always wants to be with mommy...whether I'm using the bathroom, taking a shower or working..,he's right there...wants to sit in my lap. He has become EXTRA whiny and needs attention at all times. But the cutest thing was when I was vomiting one morning, he ran in the bathroom and kept patting my back.
  • Mines behavior has changed he seems more needy and agitated.

My two woofers have been glued to me! It's so adorable! It makes me feel safe and warm and fuzzy!
  • My shar-pei and 2 cats have been fighting for my love and affection. It doesn't matter where I am in the house, they are all 3 trying to one up the others by being the sweetest/cutest/most snuggly. I can't get any sleep while being smothered with affection, purring, and tail wagging. If I shut myself in a room, they literally beat the door down until I let them in. My SO's cat hated me with a passion, but until this pregnancy. Now the SO is pretty jealous that Haya is attached to my hip all the time.
  • We have a German Shepherd and she's already pretty protective. However, for the past week or so, she's been very clingy. Whenever I do anything around the house, she has to be at my feet. She also walks right in front of me before I can get through any doors in the house. When we're sitting on the couch, she has to sit right next me, which basically feels like she's on top of my leg. But I LOVE that's she's been a lot more cuddly lately :)
  • My little spaz (cocker spaniel/jack Russell mix) is actually way more cuddly in the last couple days. She's also developed an attention problem where I think she knows that I don't feel good and won't enforce the rules so much right now :/ little bugger. She's a good girl though. My cats don't want anything to do with me unless I open the fridge, but that's not totally unusual ;) My one cat, the week I found out, wouldn't leave me alone and had to be right on my belly if I was laying on the couch.

  • We have 4 cats that are generally all over me anyways but my cat Molly who will be 11 in Aug (and that I've known since she was 2 weeks old, and have had since she was 9 weeks) has been insisting on sitting on my lap (she's not a lap cat-generally she lays beside me). She's been purring and licking my shirts-very cute and I can guess she knows something is up. My Dad's dog who generally is his shadow is glued to me when I'm over there and won't let his cat sit on me at all.

  • My golden retriever will not leave my side.. She would usually sleep in her bed at night which is on the floor at the end of our bed, now she sleeps on the floor right next to my side.. Instead of sleeping in with DH she now follows me into the bathroom when I get ready in the morning.. Always by my side. The cat has become much more lovey too... I can't complain tho! I love my fur babies and all the sweet attention
  • I have two Aussies and they definitely know something is up. Such smart dogs and lots of love. One keeps licking me and the other wont leave my side.
  • One of my cats now guards the bedroom door all night long, being extra affectionate every time I go out to the bathroom (where she clearly needs to follow me). The other cat has no hoots to give.
  • Hi all, yup my two lab mixes have been extra attentive especially if I'm not feeling well. It's said some breeds can smell cancer it makes sense they would know.
