LO gaining too much?

The nutritionist at WIC today said my DD is gaining too much weight and that we're feeding her too much. She sleeps all night and when she's awake, she eats anywhere between 6-8 ounces every 2.5-3.5 hours. The nutritionist says this is too much and we shouldn't formula feed on demand. I'm sorry if it's already been covered but I feel like if the doctor isn't worried, neither should she. Any feedback or personal experience is appreciated. She's 2 weeks away from being 4 months now.

Re: LO gaining too much?

  • What does she weigh and of her length and weight are on the same centile then she's fine you could always try to dilute some of her bottles with cool boiled water

  • Please consult Dr before giving LO water! It can be dangerous in young babies.

@blairdavis99 thank you for saying something about the water. This is a terrible about what can happen when diluting with water.

  • Is the WIC person a doctor/nurse/trained medical professional? If not DO NOT LISTEN TO THEM. Who says not to formula feed on demand? Sounds like that person doesn't know what they are talking about. Listen to your child's pediatrician!!!!!!
  • My son eats just about the same and in the 85%. My dr isn't worried and actually said he's just a big healthy kid. I personally feel that if your dr isn't worried than neither should you. Maybe WIC is saying that bc they want to limit how much they spend on each person?
  • I'm not sure what her training is but this isn't the first time she's given me information contradictory to the doctor. She doesn't even want us feeding her cereal until at least 6 months. We were gonna start introducing it in a few weeks.
  • The latest guidelines say to wait until 6 mos to introduce solids but some doctors sre still suggesting sooner.

  • Them saying not to feed on demand with formula is preposterous in my opinion!

A friend and i had babies a day apart from each other and her baby (breastfed) is about 2 kgs more than my (mostly) formula fed baby. So weight gain can vary either way.

But definitely ask your doctor over them :)
