Where are you registering?

As a first time mom, I'm already thinking about my registry although I'm not going to actually do it until I find out the gender in 4 weeks. I've checked out Babies R Us, Buy Buy Baby, Target and Amazon options plus an adorable local store here in RI. I'm overwhelmed by all the options and wanted to get opinions from those who have already registered. Thanks!

Re: Where are you registering?

  • FTM as well and haven't yet registered. I'm glad you asked this because I'm curious too. I was torn between the same four. I like Amazon for the tech savvy folks who like to order and have it shipped to them and be done with it, but I know there are people who like to see the gift in person at a store. I like that BBB has coupons (you can use bed bath & beyond coupons there too, same company), but the closest one is in the burbs so I don't know if everyone will want to drive there. I feel like target has the best prices so I may have 2 or 3, but I'd love to hear what those that have been through it think.

I registered at Amazon because I have a lot of family that live out of state.  I'll also register at Target or Babies R Us.  Trying to decide which one.

  • We did our registry on Amazon. We do not want a baby shower, and most of our family and friends live out of state, so this was the best option for us. It's great too because you just sit at home and click things and everything is in one registry. Plus, you can do universal registry items from other sites.

I'm using BabyList too so people can buy from wherever and we can shop at any store. I can also put some used items on there, which I also like so people don't have to spend money.

How do you add the used items?
  • We're going with Buy Buy Baby. I prefer the quality of their stuff. We plan on trying for another baby a year after this one and want to make sure we get stuff that will last. My friend manages the one closest to us and can help us with deals. Also, as pp mentioned, you can get 20% off coupons and use the ones from Bed Bath and Beyond as well. We plan to CD and those suckers aren't cheap. Every time we get coupons on our phones we head to the store and buy a couple of diapers. By the time the baby comes we should be all set.
  • Thinking about registering at Target and Babies r Us.
  • We are registering at Buy Buy Baby and Pottery Barn. I did a lot of the big stuff gender neutral at BBB. Now we are at a stand still until we know the sex!
  • Thinking of registering @ diapers.com
  • So far, my mom and I have just popped into Buy Buy Baby and registered for a few things...knowing my friends, most will likely just see something cute while out shopping for themselves and impulsively buy it and never look at the registry, so it's only big things for family members (bedding, stroller, etc.) My mom will be buying the crib for us, which will be the most expensive item, so that didn't factor into it.

I've started my registry at Target. They have a wide selection of the theme we would like for the nursery and there's a target close to where all of my family lives.
  • Target for us for sure.My sister-in-laws have already started a registry me for babies r us and god knows what else lol. This is our first kid and the DH is the only boy in his family so everyone is pretty excited and involved. I'm sure they're already planning the baby shower and everything and our gender reveal. His family already bought us the crib, stroller and a few other main things. I will have to keep an eye out for some of these other places. I haven't heard of diapers.com so thanks for that suggestion as well @dksport03 !! :)

  • I'm actually doing the baby list so that I can just find my favorite items from wherever and add them there. I haven't actually made my registry but I have a Pinterest board where I'm pinning my favorite items that I'll add when I register. My items are all over the place - target, buy buy baby, etsy, Amazon etc. I found it helpful to search things like "minimalist baby registry" and "baby favorites blog" and see what these moms that are like pros suggest from all their experience

STM, but with my first, I registered at Babies R Us and Target. This time, I have a private registry on Amazon for the completion coupon

  • FTM. So far using babies r us.
Won't know if it's a boy or girl for a few more weeks but we have the basics like car seat, stroller, crib, bath stuff, and some gray/white/green clothes. I'm not big on the car seat needing to be pink with flowers if it's a girl or whatever so I just picked the stuff with the best safety rating and reviews from users.
  • Target is a great place to register because there is one near almost everyone. You also get a free kit with coupons and freebies inside when you register in-store.
  • I was leaning towards BBB because of the coupons. But a girlfriend just told me that BRU accepts their coupons too! Plus if you open a credit card, they give an additional 10% off on Thursdays. Ultimately, I think I'll end up registering wherever I find my furniture.

  • I'm doing research before I start registering, because a lot of places offer perks like 5% off whatever wasn't purchased for you off your registry or 10% back on everything that was purchased for you... I plan on registering at two different places, but haven't decided for sure.

  • Wal-Mart and Babies R Us! No one I know really shops at Target that much for some reason. So eh.

  • It's funny I found this today bc yesterday DH said that a LOT of his coworkers are asking him where he is registered at so they can get stuff. I always thought it was too early to register already since I'm only a little over 15 weeks but I decided last night I would start last night. I'm at Babies R Us and Target. My husband thinks I should add walmart to the list but I thought 2 places were enough.

We are right with you on all accounts! Gender neutral big stuff for sure! Now just waiting to finish until we know the sex!

FTM and only registering at Target. We don't have a Babies R Us or Buy Buy Baby near us. And my out of state family of course will all have a Target near them. I don't feel my family or my hubs fam is techy-enough to use one of those universal baby registries either. Even though they're really cool.

I'm also doing my baby registry before we find out the sex. As a FTM we need all of the big essentials, so I don't want a ton of cute outfits that'll be worn once. Even though they're fun. Not knowing the sex myself, will also help me stick to my minimalist list too! 8)
  • @vvitchhazel I was gonna register at those places too to get the discount or cashback, but fine print is terrible. You have to buy your stuff on Amazon a month before your due date (or shower date?) which defeats the purpose of the completion discount to me. BRU was the same, we figured out we were gonna get back like $15 in a year so we just decided eff that let's go for what's easiest...hence Baby list

  • @claireloSC Good call... I'm still doing my investigating before I make any final decisions. And like PP said, I don't know that most of my friends and family would even be able to comprehend something like baby list, much to my chagrin! They want to go to a store, get a print out, and go from there.

  • I only registered at Target for my first baby. But we used a cloth diaper service and added that to the registry list. Many people paid money towards the service instead of a physical gift. It was fantastic as we ended up with nearly a year of the service. DH and I used to work at the same company and the staff (and company) was very generous.

With Amazon you can change your due date to suit when you want to shop. :) just throwing that out there. We used our completion discount to kickstart our cloth diaper collection a month or two after DS was born, worked well for us!

  • Can I hate on target? Or at least offer some advise for anyone who wants to register for target?

    Target is horrible because....
    1. They do not keep anything in stock very long. Maybe some big items, but I found that I would register for something and then a few weeks later I would get notifications that half my registry was out of stock. They also don't usually restock specific items so once it's gone it's gone. So for people like me who wanted to register early and saw things I liked it was a bust. By the time anyone was going to buy me something it was out of stock.

So here is my suggestion, if you want to register at target do it at the last possible minute. That way there is a better chance of the stuff you want actually being there.

    2. They are the worst with taking things off the registry after they are purchased. I can't tell you how many duplicates I got of stuff from target bc it wasn't taken of the registry.

Now with all that said their returns were easy so while I got a lot of duplicates I easily returned for store credit.

I registered at BRU also and didn't have any out of stock problems, granted some of the stuff there is more expensive then target. I did have issues with the delivery of my nursery furniture but I got it eventually, and long before baby got here.

I wish I would have registered at BBB. But since I didn't I can't say much about them at all.
  • @laineylove78 , yes! I've heard so many nightmares about the Target registry. Duplicates due to cashiers not removing things from the registry happens constantly. They will give you store credit, but only to the department the item was from. That's all well and good, but if you received duplicate high ticket items it can be a little frustrating.
  • We are going to register at Target and Babies R Us.  We do not have a BBB where we live.  Target is pretty local and convenient for most family and friends.  Babies R Us isn't an out of the way trip by any means, but it's not as close as Target.  I'm not even that satisfied with Target, but I think it's because I've been through the baby isles so many times at this point, I feel like it's such a small selection to choose from. Most of our stuff will probably get put onto the BRU registry and we will do smaller things like bottles, feeding supplies, etc. from Target.

Samesies. We went to both Target and two BRU and the selection was super limited. I want to register for what I want, not just what Target has in stock. No BBB here either.

  • Buy Buy Baby and Pottery Barn Kids for us!
  • Registered at Buy Buy Baby yesterday. They had a lot more options than BRU also they have the 20% coupons (you can also use bed bath and beyond coupons as well).
  • I've done mine at babies r us and going to make one at target. I only started mine early because my parents have started buying our nursery stuff and with babies r us you get 10% back in like a reward bucks after baby is born to use in the store.
  • FTM here, pretty sure we'll register at Babies R Us and at Target.
