Coffee!!!

thoughts on coffee/tea? For the first and most of the second trimester I almost completely gave it up. Now I find myself occasionally have a cup in the morning.

Re: Coffee!!!

  • I never gave it up. I've had one cup of coffee every day since my morning sickness went away. In the first trimester, it made me sick so that was an easy to way to avoid it. I even have to admit, my favourite way to drink it is with a scoop of hot chocolate in it instead of sugar. Mmmmm.... My unhealthy crutch.  And for the record, baby and I are both still very healthy despite our daily coffee. I wouldn't worry too much about having a cup.

I think there may have been a few threads about this early on? That might help you get some answers, too. :)

  • I never gave it up, jut reduced slightly. I was never one of those people that needed cups and cups of coffee a day, but would occasionally have an extra cup or 2. My doctor gave me the ok to stay under 200mg and that is what I have been doing!
  • My doctor said one caffeinated beverage a day is fine. I usually save it for a treat once in awhile. :-)
  • I drink a cup every morning and have my whole pregnancy!
  • I drink iced coffee every day, and hot coffee when it is cooler. About 16 oz. The last time I went to the doc I told her that I was very fatigued....and she told me to drink more coffee. So there you go. It's not as bad as everyone says it is. I was honest about the amount I already drink, too. Caffeine has never had much of an effect on me, but of course everyone reacts differently.
  • I drink a cup or two almost every day. I only stopped when I developed an aversion to it during my morning sickness phase. If I can't have my wine, I'm drinking my coffee, goshdurnit.
  • Everything in moderation.  Love my coffee.

  • I gave it up completely in the 1st trimester and most of the 2nd.  Now I'm back to 1 cup a day and I'm loving it!

  • Moderation. That is all. I'm a pot-a-day-er over here so I think I would have murdered someone (probably my husband) by now if I couldn't have a cup or two. I personally do half-decaf so that I can also have some black or green tea in the late morning and early afternoon! Also my morning coffee is Dunkin Donuts which has less cafine than most other brands to begin with.
  • There was a poll about this a while back (unless I'm thinking of somewhere else?) Either way, I've read that up to 200 mg per day is considered safe, so I drink one cup made using my french press every morning and I don't feel guilty about it. I did slow down 1st trimester because it didn't taste good, but I enjoy it fully now! Also, I plan to BF, and would rather have the baby used to a little caffeine than to have to wait until done BFing to have my morning coffee again.
  • I set up rules for myself. So if I have coffee in the morning I don't drink sodas during the day, just to be safe. A typical cup of coffee is about 100 mg of caffeine. My Ob said as long as I stay in the 200 range per day I should be fine.
  • I never gave it up, I switched to decaffeinated instead. I only have it on occasion anyways!
  • I try to only have one caffeinated beverage a day, mainly because I crave chocolate (but try not to indulge too much) and my OB said to stay under 200 mg. If I want a Coke with lunch (another craving), then no coffee or caffeinated tea in the morning. Everything in moderation!

I'll have a soda most days, which is less than coffee. it's my go to craving! or else if I crave a coffee I'll have one instead of a soda! 200 mg is okay!

I have never really taken in much caffeine... Simply because it makes me irritable and I am prone to breakouts whenever I have too much. Therefore, I prefer to avoid it all together. I managed to get through my entire first and second trimester with very little to no caffeine. HOWEVER... now that I am entering the third trimester, I am finding it incredibly difficult to stay awake during the day and nearly impossible to sleep at night! I talked to my doctor about it and she recommended taking in just a small amount of caffeine early in the morning, drinking plenty of water and discontinuing any liquids after 7pm. Wow! I am still sleepy but no where near as tired as I was during the day and I can now manage to sleep through the night without getting up every 20 minutes to pee!

A small amount of caffeine is okay. I just don't recommend ordering a double shot of espresso anytime soon. A small cup of coffee, or even a large 1/2 decaf once a day would be fine.
  • I had coffee for the first time last Friday and it wasn't too bad. Baby still doesn't really approve of the taste and it actually gave me a bit of a headache (ugh amateur). I'm going to try a latte this friday (its my weekly treat for a torturous week at work).
  • I only avoid it when i can't stand the smell. So first trimester was hell. Now i drink it in moderation. I'm usually a caffeine addict.
  • Never stopped drinking it, never will. No reason to stop. \:D/
  • If I stopped drinking coffee I would be an unemployed wreck. And one cup of day has been good for me, except for those very few times where I would have gone done hard without a second cup. I don't know how you caffeine addicts are able to give it up. I can't live without it!

My husband drinks his coffee black OR if he's feeling festive, he'll put hot chocolate in it. He swears by it when he needs an extra kick. I tried it once and I was shaking like a leaf. LOL

J/k, I'm a 'one cup a day' gal... Before this I was 3-4 cups a day so I have cut back
  • I can't remember who was talking about Iced Coffee on some old thread, but I've become addicted to it! I've never liked Iced Coffee until pregnancy.

I prefer my coffee hot and black, but I can do iced on a summer day. My comment also just reminded me of this:

  • I gave it up thee first trimester because of morning sickness, just smelling it made me feel sick. Once that subsided I started drinking decaf, then I started drinking half caff and when I ran out of that and discovered a big box of regular coffee in my pantry (DH bought me a box and Costco and forgot to tell me) I started drinking that. I look forward to it every morning :)
  • I just finished my daily cup of coffee. I tried giving it up at first but once the MS subsided, I realized I was just making myself miserable by avoiding it.
  • I had to give it up the first trimester because of morning sickness. It was horrible, because I wanted it, but couldn't drink it without getting sick. As soon as that passed I was right back to my morning coffee. i do half caf so that I can have more than one cup and stay under my limit. I told DH that all I want when this baby comes out is a giant pumpkin spice latte. Hopefully, they will have started serving them by the time he comes!
  • I never, ever thought I'd live without coffee but first trimester proved that wrong! I drink a cup every morning...its required in order for me to remain a productive and pleasant member of society.
  • @BrooklynBroussard that would be me, I love iced coffee!! I rarely drink hot coffee unless it's freezing cold at work or outside.  Someone else had said they loved it as well, but I can't remember who.  Glad you're enjoying it.
  • i have cut back a lot but still have one medium-sized cup of coffee a day in the morning. i have it at home (mostly) to avoid the judgement of co-workers and strangers. a co-worker once seriously asked me while i was making a cup of coffee at work if that was a "healthy choice." i wanted to punch her. i miss my iced coffees in the afternoon but i am not a morning person and really rely on my morning cup :) for a treat in the afternoons sometimes i get a decaf iced latte.

I love iced coffee. It's too hot most days for hot coffee, but come winter that's all I drink.
  • Mmmmm I look forward to my cup of coffee each morning! My sister in law mailed me some coffee from Ann Arbor that I'm now obsessed with (Roos Roast if anyone is in that area!) and I keep having her send it to me. Thank goodness my husband is heading up that way this weekend so he can bring a few bags back :)
  • Only reason I would go to McDonald's for breakfast would be to get a large sugar free vanilla iced coffee!  Haven't had one since pregnant though....haven't bothered asking if they can make one decaf.....

O'15 September Siggy Challenge -- Third Trimester Woes
  • Today (actually at this second) I am having my first real coffee! (have been doing decaf up until today) 29 weeks on Sat.
  • I bought my favorite on Friday and have been enjoying a cup here and there. I really didn't drink coffee this pregnancy until lately, and I can definitely feel the caffeine after gong for a while without it. I missed sitting and having a cup on the weekends though!

I stopped coffee completely since I found out.

    Then I decided last week that I could have one...so I got a Starbucks iced cappuccino..it was DELISH..but...then I was awake until 3 am so I haven't dared to have one since. Damn. I was so looking forward to it. 8-}
