  • Good morning ladies! My next OB appointment isn't for another couple of weeks, but I thought of a few VBAC specific questions I'm planning to ask. What VBAC questions have you/will you ask your provider?

I'm pretty sure I know the answer to these questions, but I want to hear it from my OB. :)

    1. If a uterine rupture is detected, how quickly can a c/s be performed?

    2. Will there be an OR open and available the entire time I am in the hospital in labor? ** This is important to me to discuss because when I had my c/s with DS I had to wait a couple hours for an OR to open up. Granted, he wasn't in distress so there was no specific urgency (just his 10lb 100%+ percentile head wouldn't fit out of my you know where lol). I'm sure in an emergency an OR would be available STAT, but I want to talk about it now.

    3. Will the provider that is on call physically be at the hospital the entire time I am in labor?

And a question for you ladies - is anyone considering an HBAC (homebirth VBAC)? Please say no! <3

It's scary to think about and talk about uterine rupture, but I would rather talk about it ahead of time and be prepared, and (most likely) absolutely nothing will happen.

  • Those are great questions @RunnerMeg! I'm sure your OB will be able those questions to your satisfaction.

My questions at my first appointment were mostly concerned with ACOG recommendations and my own preferences for TOLAC. But she did talk about hospital procedures for when I go into labor. Especially that time of year here in New England a snowstorm or blizzard is a likely possibility so if they know they have a TOLAC mama in labor they don't let their providers/anesthesiologists leave the hospital. Given the scope of our conversation I am completely comfortable with a hospital VBAC attempt. :)

Due to the severity of the potential emergencies a vbac presents, no way am I comfortable with the idea of an HBAC. If something goes wrong I want medical solutions right at hand. It is a little grisly to think about uterine rupture but I'd imagine it can't be any less scary than any other emergency that causes a C/S. I think I'd rather it was me than an emergency with the baby :(

  • I agree with both of you about not having a hbac. The thought of uterine rupture scares me to no end. I feel like you @StephPegasus , I wish the danger was more to me. It is the one reason I consider a csection, because id rather there be more risk to myself than baby. Although of course sections come with their own risks, but anyway.

I had some problems with my kaiser and am switching to another kaiser. My first appt is Friday and I'm super excited. The nurse told me the doctor I'm seeing is one of the most requested, and I know as a whole kaiser is vbac supportive. I haven't gotten to ask anyone about the procedures for vbac, since my first two appointments were with doctors who don't even work in the hospital anymore (wtf), so I didn't bother asking questions. I'm mostly concerned with how they'd detect and handle rupture, and what policies there are for a mama wanting to tolac (I.e. Continuous efm, mandatory iv or epidural, etc). Another bonus is I'll get an ultrasound, so can hopefully find out the sex of this little one!
