Amniotic band *update*

I had my anatomy scan on Friday and they just called and said I may have an amniotic band. They are referring me to a high risk specialist for a look with a higher resolution ultrasound. For those who don't know, they can restrict the baby and cause loss of limbs or other scarring to baby's body.

On the phone I was pretty calm because my mom had previously told me she had an amniotic band scare with my sister and she was totally fine. Then, DH asked if it was hereditary so I googled and saw some pretty scary pictures. Anybody else had any experiences with amniotic bands?

Eta: Nurse said the ultrasound tech noted that her movement did not seem to be restricted at all.

Re: Amniotic band *update*

  • Just a quick google search, but it sounds like amniotic bands are pretty rare - perhaps it was a sheet (which seems to be much less serious)? https://www.babycentre.co.uk/x559349/the-sonographer-found-an-amniotic-band-during-my-scan-what-does-this-mean

  • Hmm. She for sure said "band" but it sounded like they didn't have a high enough resolution to get a good look. The link you found sounds like they usually have something to do with scar tissue in the uterus? My mom had a csection with me before my sister, but this is my first pregnancy. I hope I didn't over exert myself and cause some damage :/

My researching found a bunch of ladies with amniotic bands that went on to have no issues. It sounds like the bands can correct themselves as long as they don't attach to baby?

Yes, I have experience with amniotic banding. My first son was born a congenital amputee, and to this day the doctors (we have seen many) are not 100% sure if it was in fact banding (no band was detected)or just some other kind of fluke accident in the womb. And no, ABS is not hereditary it too occurs randomly.

So sorry you got this news, I know it is so scary. But it sounds like your baby is doing well, especially if they did not detect any limb loss or restriction. In my experience that is great news!! I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers as you wait for your high risk appointment. I'm know the wait can be horrible, it was for me. Once you go in for that higher resolution ultrasound you will get all your questions answered.

Just to hopefully give you more piece of mind, In my situation the damage had already been done by the time I had my anatomy scan so there was nothing anybody could have done. Since your baby appears to be unaffected there is a better chance that he/she will stay that way and they can keep a close eye on things! :)

Oh and my son was born perfectly healthy otherwise, and he is one of the most intelligent, amazing, sweet little boys you will ever meet! Although I was pretty devastated after that anatomy scan, today I wouldn't change him for the world!

Sorry if I jumped all over the place, I hope it made sense. And if you have any more questions just let me know.
    :)

  • From what you said, the fact that they weren't sure, and that the movement was normal, the news do sound encouraging. I'm sorry you're going through this scare. I know it must be terrifying. I'll pray it all turns out ok for you and your baby.
  • Hugs and prayers for a good visit with your specialist.
  • Hang in there. Hopefully it won't affect your baby and everything will turn out fine. Praying for you and your little one!
  • Praying that the band will disappear before the next ultrasound and that it causes your LO no issues! Sending lots of love and hugs your way. The fact that there's no restriction sounds like good news (I have no experience with it). Please let us know how any further appointments and ultrasounds go!

  • One of my close friends has a daughter who was affected by amniotic band and it wasn't detected in ultrasounds. She is missing the bottom half of her left arm. When I tell you she is the most gorgeous, kind, popular, and happy little 2 year old. She already has a prosthetic and it hasn't slowed any development like crawling, playing or eating. Kids adapt and although the best case is that nothing is "wrong" - please know that it seems scary but kids born with disabilities are natural fighters. Sending prayers ♡
  • Just wanted to let you know that thoughts and prayers are heading in your direction.
  • We have our appointment with the high risk specialist this afternoon. I'll update when we have more answers!
  • Good luck today! I'll be thinking about you
  • Good luck! good thoughts headed your way!

So happy to hear the good news!
  • Yay! That's great news!!

  • Amazing news!
  • High risk specialist said it was NOT an amniotic band! Needless to say, we were beyond thankful to see ten little fingers and ten little toes!

I was diagnosed with a circumvellate placenta, which is basically where the outer half of the placenta is significantly larger than the inner half so it ends up curling inward like a bowl. There are still risks associated with this, but they are much lower. The doctor sounded like he was not too concerned, but I will be going back once a month to monitor her growth to make sure she is getting proper nutrition.

Baby girl was blissfully lounging away during all of our worrying. You can see her leaned back with her ankles crossed and her hands behind her head :)

Such great news!!!!! I'm so happy for y'all!!
