What will LO call grandparents?

Re: What will LO call grandparents?

  • I'm Romanian, and in my culture it's very common for the kids to come up with special nicknames for the grandparents- I did that with both sets, and to this day that's what my 5 siblings and all my cousins still call them. So we will wait and see what sort of things he or she comes up with :)

  • My mom will be LeeLee (her name is Lisa), and my dad will be PopPop. DH's parent's haven't decided what they want to be called yet. And my grandparents will be Bama and Poppa, same as I still call them :)

Love Booma! I have always called my grandma "Bama" and so will the baby. People think it's so weird, glad to see something similar.

  • We have Nana and PopPop on one side and grandma and grandpa "fuzz" (a shortening of their last name) on the other side, to distinguish from grandma's husband and DD's biological grandpa.

Not me, but my brother's new in-laws insist that their grandchildren call them by their first names; Frank and Lorraine. I don't know why but it cracks me up to imagine a toddler referring to these very straight-laced upper class by the names Frank and Lorraine.
  • My parents are: bachie (polish nickname) and grandpa

DH'S parents are: Nana and grandad

  • Sometimes it's great to let them start talking and decide what they will call them. My parents are nana and papa because of other nieces, but on my husbands side my oldest boy was the first grandchild. When he would do things with my FIL he (FIL) would say " come on buddy" "let's do this buddy" well as soon as my son could talk he calls my MIL grandma but my FIL is Buddy! My other children call him buddy too! One year our middle child looked at him and said "Buddy you are just like a grandpa" we still laugh about it!

  • Wow, you guys are creative and have some great ideas... I half expected this post to be filled with something along the lines of, "grandma and grandpa- duh!"

(Which is what we'll be calling ours grandma and grandpa when talking to them grandma first name, grandpa first name when talking about them - to clarify)
  • My daughter calls my mom 'me' lol I think short for Grammy and my dad papa. She calls my husbands mom gaga and his dad boppa. We will see if this one follows suit

My parents want Grandma (first name) and Grandpa (last name). My dad said he never thought it was right we called his mom Grandma [first name]. They will probably just be grandma and grandpa since my in-laws want different names. My FIL likes PaPa. My MIL keeps changing her mind. Last month it was Glamma. This weekend she told us she wants to be GoGo. No idea why, but her sister said "well, you do walk fast". My mom said "then I guess I'm StopStop".
They also joked my mom would be Big Grandma and his mom will be Little Grandma (lapband).

  • My mom is Grammy, my daddy is Grumpa (he's a huge Grumpy the dwarf fan) and my MIL hasn't decided yet.
  • My parents are Elmo and Papa and my in laws are grandma and grandpa. My nephew named my parents when he was little and it stuck
  • My nephews and niece call my parents mima and grandpa Dave. I think adding the Dave to grandpa is kind of cute! That's what I'm going to have my child call them too!

My dad is going by Grandpa. My mother passed away last year but she was Granny to the dogs so I figured Granny for her. My MIL is Nana and my FIL is Papa. I spoke with my DH's grandpa and he wants to Poppy since he was Poppy to my DH. Not sure what his grandma wants to be called.
  • We already had nieces and nephews on both sides, so we just complied with what all the other kids did. I hated when my cousins didn't call my grandparents the same thing as I did when growing up. We used to argue about it.

My mom didn't want to be a "grandma" (and I would taunt her with Southernisms like Meemaw and Granny) so she's YaYa and my dad is Papa. No, we're not Greek, she just liked the name.

FIL is Gramps and MIL is Grizzlie (that was a convergence of Grandma Lizzie that everyone thought was cute).

  • My parents will be grandma and grandpa and my boyfriend and his parents are from Germany so they will be oma and opa.
  • Same as my son I'm sure. My parents are Nana and Papa and my inlaws are Grandma and Grandpa.

I make no promises for anyone else lol

  • My 17 month old son was the first grandchild on both sides so there was a lot of debate as to names. DH parents go by grandma and grandpa. My parents wanted to be different, so they they go by Nana and G-Pa. I think G-Pa is weird but it stuck.
  • My side, Dai Dai and Poppa. I have a niece who just came up with Dai Dai for my mom out of no where and it stuck. For hubs, I think we'll let LO come up with something. On his side there's a step-granddad so there will be three. I love that Ava personalized my mom's name, so I think I'm leaning that route.
  • My parents decided (somewhat bizarrely) on Pinkie and Paulie when my DS was born.  I think they weren't ready to think of themselves as grandparents or something!  DH and I call them the Gangster Grandparents since i think it sort of sounds like Bonnie and Clyde :)

DH's parents are Grandma and Grandpa.  So we've got both extremes.  At least our kids won't get mixed up! :)
