I had my anatomy scan on Friday and they just called and said I may have an amniotic band. They are referring me to a high risk specialist for a look with a higher resolution ultrasound. For those who don't know, they can restrict the baby and cause loss of limbs or other scarring to baby's body.
On the phone I was pretty calm because my mom had previously told me she had an amniotic band scare with my sister and she was totally fine. Then, DH asked if it was hereditary so I googled and saw some pretty scary pictures. Anybody else had any experiences with amniotic bands?
Eta: Nurse said the ultrasound tech noted that her movement did not seem to be restricted at all.
Re: Amniotic band *update*
My nephew was born with amniotic band syndrome (I guess that's what they call it?) My sister's amniotic fluid leaked and it wrapped around his fingers and legs separately. It looked like rubber bands were tightly wrapped around them. He had multiple surgeries before the age of 1 and probably some afterwards. These were all done at the Children's Hospital in Dallas.
On his left hand, his first two fingers are nubs. This did not keep him from being in the percussion section in school and being the Percussion Section Leader in high school
The surgeries on his legs left his thighs with scars that kind of look like the pattern on Charlie Brown's t-shirt.
He is almost 21 years old now and hasn't had any really bad issues with it as far as his life has been. It's good that they are able to catch all of this with your ultrasounds now. My sister didn't have any ultrasounds with him 20 years ago and so they only found out about it when he was born. I hope that they can follow it closely to make sure that it's not wrapping around anything vital (such as head vs a finger - don't mean to scare you with that, but if it's a finger, it's not going to harm your baby as far as function like being around the head would).
Please feel free to ask me any further questions either on here or PM. If I don't know the answers, I can ask my sister or nephew.

ETA: As far as I know, this is not something genetic. It is a fluke that can happen with some pregnancies. My niece was born 6 years later with no abnormalities whatsoever.

My researching found a bunch of ladies with amniotic bands that went on to have no issues. It sounds like the bands can correct themselves as long as they don't attach to baby?

I read more about it and apparently about 70% of the time the amniotic bands have disappeared by the repeat ultrasound. If it is still there, hopefully it will be an "innocent amniotic band" and won't be attached to her at all. The fact that she didn't seem to be restricted is very promising!

All I can do at this point is pray and have peace in the knowledge that He cares for her no matter what the outcome!

I was diagnosed with a circumvellate placenta, which is basically where the outer half of the placenta is significantly larger than the inner half so it ends up curling inward like a bowl. There are still risks associated with this, but they are much lower. The doctor sounded like he was not too concerned, but I will be going back once a month to monitor her growth to make sure she is getting proper nutrition.
Baby girl was blissfully lounging away during all of our worrying. You can see her leaned back with her ankles crossed and her hands behind her head
