Blood Test/gender

Re: Blood Test/gender

  • Yes I am getting the DS test but they cannot tell you the gender with this test... they do a blood test and ultrasound but I have to wait for 18 weeks it's still way to early.

Yes I am 10 weeks today and I will be going on Tuesday from my blood drawn.. she said it would take up to 2-5 days for my results but they usually come in 2 days. I am a bit nerves. But I don't have anything to worry about becuz on my husbands side they're all healthy and on my side we are all healthy so my doctor said we should be fine. We are extremely anxious to find out the babies gender so we can go shopping!!! (: G' luck!

I am curious how you even got an order for the testing if you and H are healthy with a clear history. Shopping purposes is not a reason to have the test run. And to say so on a board where people have actual concerns about the health of their LO seems insensitive.
    Edit spelling
Becuz it offered to everyone and anyone! (: not just becuz of history. I was given three choices and that test was one of them so I picked it. Yes this is my first baby and I was not gonna wait til week 17-25 to find out the gender. Also this is not a language arts class that I have to have CORRECT spelling.

Um what? It says "Edit Spelling" Because she edited HER own post to fix her OWN spelling issue.
    LOL

Yea just came back to this. That was just wow. Thanks for the laugh!

  • Just a FYI - if you are trying to talk to your insurance company to find out if it is covered, the CPT code for Materniti21 from Sequenom Laboratories is 81420.

Question, I am a FTM and confused about all these tests. My appointment is next week for 12 weeks & bloodwork. What's the difference between the Chorionic Villi Sampling, Nuchal Tranlucency and this Harmony test? I also got pamphlets for an Afp4 test. I know the harmony test seems to be way more in depth, but are the CVS and NT test the same thing? My dr just sent me home with paper work and it's kinda confusing.

The CVS they take an internal sample of the CV of the uterus. It would give you a full chromosomal work up like and amniocentesis. It is considered an invasive procedure bit very accurate. The NT scan is a combo u/s and blood work that is supposed to give you odds for some chromosomal issues as well as neural tube defects. The harmony and tests like it are "free cell DNA" test. They are a non invasive blood test that is supposed to be 99% accurate in determining the trisomy chromosome defects.

I'm kind of shocked about how cruel users are to one another on these boards. It's really disappointing. :/ Why does it matter so much to a stranger if another woman makes a spelling error or wants to know the baby's sex to buy outfits for her child? This judgmental bs is pathetic..

Future moms should be supportive of one another, not constantly bashing each other for fun.

One, no one said anything about people's spelling errors. If you read the comments you would have saw that the poster was correcting her OWN spelling error.

Secondly, I think the issue that some people have is the fact that these tests are not done for the purpose of figuring out the sex of the baby and should not be taken lightly. Some people have some very serious decisions to make after receiving the results of these tests.

  • Is it okay not to have the test done? My doctor request all women complete it between 10-12 weeks but since there is nothing to be done (medicine) after we find out the results, I don't see the point in having it done. I want to have the baby regardless of what it could possibly have. My doctor also mentioned an ultrasound to check for Down syndrome but I'm not sure how any of that works. I'm a FTM and all these tests and procedures is a little scary. I don't know what is mandatory and needed!
  • We just got our results back today. It was a huge weight lifted to here them say the baby was healthy! As for the gender. I am very impatiently waiting for my husband to get home from work so we can open the envelope together!

What was the test called that you had done?

Personally, I am not having the test done. I am not considered "Advanced maternal age" at 30/31 and I do not have a family history of any disorders in my family. If I wanted too, I could have it done even though I am not high risk. (Just FYI since some have stated you can't have it done if your not high risk) Its a personal decision that we have made and are on the same page with our OB. Even though its not as accurate they will take measurements and look at all that during the 20 weeks ultrasound… though I am not sure exactly what they can tell from there, they can tell if there may be any abnormalities. Good luck making the right decision for you… but make sure you talk to your OB about it!

You do not need to have it done, completely optional. Many women like to know to help plan for the birth, should there be issues, but you absolutely do not have to do it. Plenty of people don't.
  • I was on the fence about this test. I went in with the mind set that I did not want to know because I thought it would just make me more nervous. My doctor recommends it to everyone, whether you are high risk or not, and here is the reasoning he gave me:

Not only are they testing for chromosomal defects but they are also testing your blood for different levels of hormones and DNA. There is something they test for in the blood that can actually determine your risks for delivering a premature baby. They recently had a patient who levels came back low so they watched her like a hawk through her pregnancy. She ended up delivering her baby when he was 2 lbs but because they watched her so closely and where prepared he had no need for any interventions. My husband and I then decided that we wanted our doctors to be fully prepared for anything they find with the testing and if we end up having to worry about something for the next few months then it will be worth it in the end. This is a personal decision but I really liked how my doctor broke it down for me. It is an added bonus to find out the sex earlier but was not a decision maker for us.

After reading some of these posts I believe even more now that it's so important to ask your dr and physicians assistant questions when you're at your appointments. And usually they will have a nurse you can call from home if you forgot a question or something comes up. Don't feel like you're burdening them by asking too many questions. It's really important that you are well informed and comfortable with what's going on. Good luck.
  • We declined the testing after our 2nd appointment and were asked by our Dr again yesterday to make sure our minds hadn't changed. We declined and she agreed with our decision because we felt that since we have no history of chromosomal abnormalities in our family histories, that it wasn't necessary.

Never heard of the blood test. Getting my chromosomal testing done tomorrow does this mean they will be able to tell the gender? What is the blood gender test called?
How far along are you? There are different tests. The one people are referring to the also tells the sex is done in the first trimester. It's very in depth and not usually covered by insurance unless the mom is high risk or older than 35. It checks for all sorts of chromosomal abnormalities and because the testing is so detailed it also happens to tell the sex. The more common test (and what you might be having) is done in the second trimester called the Quad Screen. It checks for hormone levels that might indicate Down's Syndrome, Spina Bifida, and some others. It's paired with an NT scan U/S. Depending on your insurance, this is usually covered so a lot of people have it done, but some opt not to. It does not determine sex of the baby. Either way, I would check with your insurance to make sure what you're having is covered. If not, it can be rather expensive.

  • I want to get this test but I do not know if it will be affordable. My father was adopted and passed away when he was 42 due to a hereditary AV malformation. I know the test won't be able to discover that but I am still terrified of other hereditary conditions that we may not be aware of. My doctor does the Informaseq test and suggested it but we have a high deductible insurance plan and an HSA account that was just opened in January so we have only a limited amount saved up at this point. I was told the test could possibly cost between $700 and $1000 (if they bill insurance) which would wipe out our account and leave us nothing for our other maternity payments. My insurance will cover it at 90% once the deductible has been met but we still have $2200 left to go on that and probably won't reach that this year. Has anyone else had a similar experience? As for gender, my doctor is pretty confident that she will be able to tell the gender at our 13 week ultrasound so we are getting anxious waiting for that!
  • Harmony is what the test was called that I did

My office only offered a "first trimester" scan, i have to go to another city for it. They said blood test and u/s all to test for downs syndrome patau synd and edwards synd. I will be getting it done since we don't know much about our family history, they said nothing about finding out the gender.
  • We did this test 2 weeks ago due to the fact that I am considered a "high risk" pregnancy.  My doctor called me last Friday to tell me that we were cleared and have nothing to worry about which was a huge relief!  We see our OB tomorrow for specifics.

It depends on your plan through your employer, or whoever it is through. I've had BCBS through two different school districts. Both times the 1st tri screening was covered but I've had other variances. It totally depends on the contract. Have you tried calling your insurance directly to see what, if any, screenings they cover? You may need codes your OB's office can provide.

I talked to 3 different people and received 3 different answers on Friday. I had procedure codes and diagnosis codes and they initially said yes, then they said no. I put a call in to a BCBS supervisor today to get clarification. Very frustrating.

My doctor was surprised when I told her they said they would not cover it. She checked with her office manager and they told her that yes it's elective and could cost over $1,000. She was having me do the bloodwork and ultrasound scan due to family history. I'm still waiting to hear back from BCBS from a supervisor with a clear yes or no answer as to whether it's covered or not. The 3 people I talked to had no clue.

After talking to both my doctor and BCBS, it sounds like the blood test and NT scan are covered. That said, I know BCBS has a ton of different insurance policies based on state, etc so it may be different for you. I hope you got an answer!

I don't know which cfDNA bloodwork I am getting done tomorrow (but I will try to remember to ask...) but the OB said that if insurance doesn't cover it, the OOP cost is capped at $100.  I am 46yo so they should cover it, but $100 is worth it for peace of mind for me.  Perhaps you can see if your OB can do whichever test the one is that I am getting (It seems like other mama's mentioned the cap before, so maybe someone can chime in with the name before I go tomorrow.) so even if you have to pay OOP you are only paying $100 instead of thousands.

  • We paid about $700CAD for panorama (similar to harmony). Everything else is free in Canada but should probably see if my insurance covers it.

I think if it's necessary and/or affordable (I'm in Australia so it's only 100 whether you have any family history or not) then why not get it done?...considering it can be used for 2 different things...you get peace of mind and the added bonus of finding out the sex of the baby...obviously it's a little different if it's in the thousands but honestly if it's affordable and doable why make people feel bad for wanting to get it done no matter what the reason...we are all just excited/nervous/hormonal and need news...good bad or other, to stop worries and maybe put a smile on our faces after months of nausea lol
  • wagvanwagvan member
So Panorama is the test I got.  They will bill my insurance.  If insurance wont cover it,  they said we will have to pay a flat $100.  Well worth it for peace of mind.  Now I just have to wait 7-10 days for results.  Waiting is the worst.
