Postpartum workout/diet?

Any mamas planning a workout plan or "diet" after baby is here? I have definitely not been a thoughtful eater throughout my pregnancy and I been have giving into every craving I have (usually chocolate, ice cream, or chick-fil-a). I have put on a lot more weight than I anticipated and would love to shed this baby weight (or at least try) ASAP!
I'm going to let my body recover from birth first of course, but I am way too excited to not have cravings anymore (I have never been someone to like sugary/junk food) and I plan on doing lots of squats, going on walks/runs with my jogger stroller and I've heard that breast feeding helps with the weight loss as well, which I plan on trying, but we'll see how it goes.

Heard great things about the paleo/caveman/primal diet and it seems to work with BF.

What are you planning on doing? I need some motivation as I am someone who HATES working out.

STMs- what worked best for you postpartum?

  • I have heard great things about the paleo diet too, but not sure if it is for me. My mom and I did the Digest Diet (it's a book) before I got pregnant and I dropped 23 lbs really quick and it is very healthy. The first few days were torture because my body still wanted to eat junk, but after a few days I stopped craving sugar and all of the junk. It is basically just healthy eating, but they make it easier for people like me who need guidance. I have also done Jenny Craig very successfully in the past and I keep my membership there so that I can go back whenever I want. Weight Watchers is good for lots of people, for me it is a lot of work (I don't like to have to think and count when I first start out). I want to get back on the treadmill and my spin bike in a bad sort of way and then I will start to incorporate weights. I did not lose all of my baby weight with DS, this time I will be damned if I don't.
  • I really love my bump but I also really miss my pre- pregnancy body. At the hospital I'm having sushi and champagne but as soon as we get home, DH and I are doing a whole30. I'm also immediately putting on a bellefit corset to help pull my abs back together. I'll have to start going on walks again really soon otherwise my dog will eat my furniture (yes, DH can take him but I'm using it as motivation). Once I'm cleared to workout I'll start running again and taking barre classes. I'm hoping to fit back into my clothes by thanksgiving.
  • I lost 65 lbs on Weight Watchers before I got pregnant. I might do the program again or I may try Advocare. WW was steady weight loss for me and an "at my pace" kinda diet. I did minimal working out, ie. walking, swimming, etc. I believe Advocare is strict but has great results. I think as long as a program fits with your lifestlye and you stick with it- it will be a win.
  • I'll be doing Advocare 24 day challenge!! I love Advocare!! Will definitely be needing their spark which helps with energy and mental focus having two newborns and two other children as well!! Lots of my friends call it happy mamma juice!!
  • I'll be back on my isagenix lifestyle. Lost al of my baby weight doing it and loved it! Most of the products are BF safe so that's a plus. For me, I loved how much energy I had and the sleep was amazing! Can't wait to lose this weight and feel overall better.

Of course my workout plan will be rigorous once I'm cleared. I plan to mix up strength training and cardio. So, gym days and T25.

  • @CaliforniaDream87 Do I have to find a rep in my area for Isagenix? I have heard amazing things about the program.
  • I'll Be Doing weight watchers, it was awesome pre pregnancy and I lost 20 pounds with it so that's what I'll be doing again. If it ain't broke don't fix it!

Yep. You can generally sign up with anyone who uses the program. Believe me, I've tried tons of programs that first year after DS. Fell into a deep depression because the fucking weight just wouldn't come off. 2 months on isagenix.....worked miracles for me and my health. I can go on and on. But I'll spare you :)

I do Isa as well. I've been having drinking the shakes during pregnancy- I crave them! I'm looking forward to the BF plan when baby arrives. Isa is awesome.
  • I plan on following the principles of Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle. It's the only plan where I've been able to stick to the nutrition principles for a long time not feeling deprived or swinging off the bandwagon. Before getting pregnant I spent 3 months dropping 5% body fat and was really able to tone up, feeling amazing.

This program also encourages weight lifting 2-3x a week and cardio based on your goals and body type. I'll probably take closer to 6 months to reach my goals slowly since I plan on exclusively BF and not sure how that will play in.

I don't plan to do anything extra special besides get back to my regular workout regimen and eating better. It took some time, but worked like a charm after DD1
  • I usually wait 6wks before dieting after my babies to establish a good Breast milk supply. I will start walking as soon as I feel up to it which is usually 2-3 wks postpartum. I had good success after DS with MFP to track calories and p90x workouts.

  • DH and I went paleo about 2 years ago and thats when I really leaned out. We also followed an 80/20 rule. Spot on at least 80% of the time and give in here and there no more than 20%. Helps to not go on binges. Ive stayed on most of pregnancy with the exceptiom of giving in to sugary treats a little more and letting myself have whole grains. Going back strict as soon as baby is here. I have loved paleo diet and there are paleo approved sweets that are awesome as well to help get past cravings.
  • I'm about 38 weeks - gained 30 lbs so far....and I have no idea what will work after baby ....eek! What normally works for me is portion control and no sugars (well, a lot less sugar) only because I know I will fail a restrictive diet....guaranteed. But I'm totally not prepared for shedding weight. I'm over here taking notes from everyone. And I REALLY want to have more energy after baby is born!!!
  • In gonna do 21 day fix. Done it in the past. I don't do shakeo. Hate that stuff

I'm interested in doing the 21 day fix. Did you like the workouts? Seemed like a good option with a newborn- 30 minute video. Pre-pregnancy i was in decent shape, but really slacked lately.
  • I gained a LOT of weight when I was in my 20's and ended up losing it all by following weight watchers and never really gained a pound back.  I think it was a total of 130 lbs gained and then lost.  I've gained about 35 lbs this pregnancy SO FAR and i have about 4 weeks until my due date so I'll be needing some extra help I'm sure to lose the baby weight... I'm planning to start WW again with a light workout routine (I really liked T-25 - but i'm not sure if I will be able to jump right into that again).

I can't recommend weight watchers enough.  I've never been a healthy eater and that diet is all about portion control and just paying close attention to every food/beverage you put in your body.  I was still able to enjoy all the crappy foods I love - just in much more reasonable portions.  Also - I don't care what ANYONE says...the cheat day is a LIE!!!

    Good luck to you ladies!
  • Not a specific fad, but I will be in the gym about 4 weeks after I have him, when the hubby gets home from work. I'm slightly looking forward to it, but only slightly lol
  • I'm all about milk supply and its crucial to me to not eat/drink synthetic things like so many protein products. I'm getting back to the weights ASAP and also using a waist trainer. I haven't been eating very much while pregnant and I'm prepared to actually INCREASE my intake of everything. I agree with the other lady who said the first 6 weeks is establishing breastfeeding habits. It took 6 months to gain this fluff, it will take at least that long to get off!
  • I'm a fan of My Fitness Pal - I've actually still been logging my food during pregnancy to ensure that I gain a healthy amount of weight but don't go overboard. After breastfeeding I'll cut calories a bit but I don't want to punish myself. Being a mum to a newborn seems challenging!

I already have an elliptical that I purchased when I found out I was pregnant but have been unable to use it because of my fibroids. After I give birth I will use it, lift weights, walk around the neighborhood and eat clean 80% of the time. I've been enjoying eating pretty much whatever I want but I know I won't be able to do it after our little Ava arrives.
  • I'll be going back on weight watches immediately after birth, and then will transition to using Tracy Anderson's post-pregnancy DVDS. I've been using her pregnancy DVDs 5x per week throughout all of this - her method is awesome!

I'll be lifting weights and hopefully my disgust over chicken, fish, pork and other protein will go away (I've been very disgusted with meat and meat products during pregnancy) I haven't gained a crazy amount of weight but, my muscular legs have turned to mush. My arms are jiggly. Not happy about it =(
  • I did the 21 day fix pre pregnancy and loved it. It teaches you portion control and healthy eating. Plus the workouts are only 30 mins which are totally doable. Pre pregnancy I did that plus jogging and I never felt better.
  • I generally use My Fitness Pal to track calorie intake and do Spin 3 times a week. I had to give up Spin after my 1st Trimester so I look forward to doing that again & eventually cutting back on calories after my breast milk is established.
  • A friend gave me a jogging stroller, and I can't wait to start using it. Soon as I'm cleared for walking and jogging it's on. Then just eat healthy, lofts of veggies, lean protien, complex carbs... I'm sure it is much harder than it sounds, but I figure I'm gonna try keeping it simple.
  • I had a really difficult time getting back into working out last time because every time I worked out my milk supply would rank.

I'm hoping I can get back into it sooner this time without having supply issues. I still do Zumba 2x a week but when I come back I want to add in weights. I'll probably do the Whole30 again, which we did as a family a few months ago and we felt so good. Hubby lost 20lbs in a month. I have had great results having Shakeology for breakfast in the past, but I don't think that will be enough calories when I'm nursing.

Definitely Weight Watchers. I lost all my baby weight - and more - on WW after my first baby. The beauty is that if you're breastfeeding, you get 14 extra points per day to indulge upon. I'm a person who needs "rules" to keep me in check. If you are someone who needs boundaries and needs help weighing what is or isn't a healthy choice, WW is the way to go.

Call your insurance company and see if they have discounted rates for WW. Many do.
  • @Wering had no idea that some insurances helped with discounts on WW, thanks for the tip! From all the responses on here WW seems to work pretty well for most ladies!
  • Am I the only pregnant woman who hasn't thought about weightloss?? I honestly don't know what I have gained. Dr hasn't complained, so I haven't been concerned. The constant worry people have over their bodies saddens me. ( I fully expect backlash from this comment. I know I should simply keep my mouth shut since I don't have a useful opinion. For not doing that, I apologize)

I've considered losing the baby weight - primarily because I did it before. But to be honest, it is NOT going to be a priority after baby is born. Establishing milk supply is difficult if you are watching calories or burning them off doing too much exercise rather than producing milk. I think it's important to have a plan in place if you're like me and just looking at cake puts 10 pounds on. But no, it's not going to be my 100% priority. You're not alone.

So....because I plan to get healthy AND lose my baby weight makes me "constantly worried" about my weight? Wow. A little over dramatic I'll say. My doctor hasn't said anything to me about my weight gain. I've actually only gained the recommended amount however what's wrong with wanting to lose excess weight and become the healthier version of you? Nothing. Meh, I would side eye anyone who isn't concerned about their health after having a baby.

  • I didn't think about postpartum weight loss at all as a FTM but I really regretted not taking better care of myself postpartum last time and it took me almost two years to lose the baby weight. Once I did, though, it made keeping up with a toddler as well as this pregnancy easier.
  • I heard Weight watchers is a great way esp if you are breastfeeding - you can easily adjust points. T25 gave me an amazing shape pre preg so I'll continue with that after a while. With my first however- whenever I tired to diet my milk supply dwindled so honestly I just ate a lot of soups, made healthy choices for the most part and walked. Lost 45 lbs in 4-5 months. One of my girlfriends swears by purium but I can't handle shakes only esp after baby sleep deprived & hormonal. No thanks :)
  • I'm not really a plan or diet type person. Eat clean and keep active. I try to follow the 80/20 rule and get my butt to the gym 5-6 days a week. It's not about losing weight or fitting into size whatever jeans, it just makes me feel good.
