Re: Feeding check in and support 7/13 to 7/19

  • I am stopping breastfeeding. :( I've been really emotional and guilty about it but it was killing me. Also I think both of us have thrush but have to wait until Monday for an appointment. Ughhh

  • Okay. I am terrified of getting mastasis. The mom who posted about her fever has brought it back up. I'm trying to make sure I'm emptying every feeding & checking for plugged ducts. A few weeks ago I mentioned my fear to a friend & she said I would be able to tell ASAP if I even had a plugged duct, not to worry so much. Someone that's had it please tell me I should be able to catch it early...
  • What kind of beer will help increase my milk supply? I'm on the verge of giving up on BF : (

Blocked ducts are painful and usually a lump is easily felt. I caught my second one earlier than my first. With my first blocked duct I wasn't sure if the pain was normal or what...... Lovely breastfeeding!
    @krystleshel
  • @krystleshel My dr told me mastitis is not always caused by blocked ducts. I got a raging case without any blocked ducts. Mine was from fatigue + cracks in nipples. See my post in the new medical thread for more info regarding prevention. I know what you mean about living in fear of it, I'm the same way with fear about Thrush!
  • My issue with mastitis was due to fatigue, too. I've had some plugged ducts, but the pain wasn't even comparable. It took a week to get over, but now DH makes me take sleep breaks every night now so I can't complain too much. It sucked, but now that it's gone I feel like I can handle anything else breastfeeding throws at me.
  • Thank you @klkonwi , @hgilmore11 (I read your other post too), & @bethanne09 ! It's good to know fatigue is a causing factor. I'm checking for plugged ducts in the shower & thankfully this week my nipples have toughened up (no more cracks!). & for another 2-3 weeks I get to sleep in with LO. She eats around 6-7 & I put her in bed with me on the boppy lounger until 9-10 & go back to sleep together. When school starts back-who knows how much sleep I'll get.
  • curious if anyone can help me with this.
Today LO threw up/spat up(not sure what to call it but it was quite a bit) and it kinda shot forwards while he was in his carseat after a doctors visit. any idea why he threw up? its the first time for him. the dr is a 20 minute drive and i had fed him for 20 minutes right until we had to leave. could it have been the drive that did it? (I personally get motion sickness pretty badly)
he hasnt done it again today either.
  • How can you tell when he is comfort nursing and when is it OK to take him off? If he is plainly asleep or he pops off the boob I can tell he is done. But he tends to stay on a really long time if I let him.

My LO had this in week 2, he just seemed to drink a little too fast, chugged and choked and when he was done he would projectile vomit. I learned to try to pace him, take him off and burp often, and the problem has now resolved itself. I had a pretty forceful letdown, but I think that has been corrected now, and LO is more competent now at breastfeeding as well.

I try to listen for when mine stops swallowing. If he does, I take him off and burp him. If he still seems hungry, I usually give him the other boob.

Right, swallowing is a good indicator. Also if my LO fusses and gets aggressive at the boob, it's usually a sign.

But if you have the time and the will, let them comfort nurse! It makes them feel better, bonds you to them, and, at least in the beginning, helps your milk produce/regulate.
  • i was burping LO after a feeding and he started spitting up :O
he is not one to spit up except for today and yesterday after his appointment. im wonder if todays is because he ate too much. (he had fed for 20 minutes an hour before this one)
    my poor baby.
  • For those mamas exclusively pumping, is there a time in the middle of the night that you find it really hard to wake up to do it? No complaints but because dd sleeps usually 5 hrs the 1st shift of the night I can't get motivated to get up when I am supposed to. I set an alarm but I don't wake up on my own.
  • So I'm at a friend's engagement party, & there's young kids here, so I feel awkward BFing with my cover around them, so I'm inside in a comfy chair. Normally I don't care though. I just don't know (personally) what I would say to 3-7 year olds after, "I'm feeding my baby..." You never know how parents are....

We have good friends who have two teenage boys. I find it weird to do in front of them too. Other times in public I couldn't care less.
  • My LO suddenly only eats two ounces at a time. It doesn't matter if I nurse him before or not. It bothers me because I know that's not enough for a 6 week old. IDK if its because he has been pooping less or what???
  • @devyns2nd mine has been doing the same. She eats more often during the day so not extremely worried about it. As long as lo is growing try not to be concerned.
  • this has been the feeding schedule for today. not determined by me.

The most telling statistic in this screenshot? "Slept - 0 time"

  • @JessHeppell same here! She turned three weeks and all she did was gnaw on my boob and only sleep for minutes between feedings. I was losing it yesterday. She managed to sleep three hours this morning between feedings so I feel ok at the moment.

oh i dont use it to track sleep or diapers anymore :P somehow LO slept 6 hours last night and he isnt even 2 weeks old. (unless i was just so tired that i put a boob in his mouth and didnt log it)
  • @JessHeppell I figured you didn't use it to track sleep - I don't on mine, either - but somehow seeing it printed there, in all its stark bleakness... It struck a chord with me.

    Sleep. Zero time.

    Yes. Yes. ;)

Ugh ugh ugh I have been hysterical all weekend because every time I feed LO she spits up (not new) but now it seems to upset her. She writhes in pain and I can't do anything, I feel so helpless. She is too uncomfortable to sleep during the day, she will be fine one minute and red and screaming the next. I was feeling traumatized every time I went to feed her.

I called the doc and we are trying anti-Colic formula. I'm hoping it helps because I can't stand to see LO in such pain.

I'm ignoring the fact the formula will run us $375 a month...

I'm sure we all feel this way, but I wish I could take on her pain on her behalf!
  • I just leaned over to wipe up spit up while pumping and spilled my pumped breast milk. So. Feeling like dying now..
TTC: 1/2014 BFP: 9/24 EDD: 6/8/2015 Sorry for the poor man's siggy...ticker won't load regardless of how many tips I read.

    That's a bummer @dancegurl1118 I'm so sorry !!!!!!!
@hoodoll82 I'm sorry you are going through that. Seeing them in pain is the absolute worst.

So, last Monday, a nurse told me I have thrush, and so I went to see my doctor. He convinced me I didn't and that the pain was normal, which I knew wasn't true, but I also tried a new nipple cream which helped a little so I started second guessing myself and tried to give it a little time. And then I figured since I'm having pain there must still be a problem with my latch even though we seemed to have previously fixed it. And so I went to see a LC today and surprise... She says I definitely have thrush and you can't diagnose by sight and my doctor shouldn't have done that and so my poor baby has been having painful feeds for like 2 weeks now and I have had painful boobs and I'm just so MAD!
  • @lwyz that sucks. Good you know now though and they can help you correct it. How is it that BF'ing has been around since the dawn of time and professionals don't have it figured out better????

@janit368 Right? So frustrating. Oh well, we'll be fine. I just did the first treatment and he was just gulping and ate forever. :D

I cried a little inside for you. Totally been there.
  • We switched to expensive hypoallergenic formula on Sunday to deal with LO's screaming and writhing after feeds plus crazy spit up and reflux. It immediately made a difference and gave me a happy, smiling baby. Then today, 3/4 days in, we start to regress - not as bad as what we had before, but a few dramatic spit ups and angry baby time. I think I'll be devastated if this doesn't work. I just made DH do a feed since I'm on the hook for the next 5-6 given the hours... PLEASE send me good vibes!
