Tooth ache

i am 28 weeks Today and have a horrible tooth ache. Has anyone had to deal with this during pregnancy. Will a dentist touch you without clearance from the gynecologist? Can I use orajel? I'm on pain!

Re: Tooth ache

  • Among all the information and papers and stuff we get at our first visit my obgyn gives us a note to take with us if we go to the dentist during our pregnancy. It kind of informs them I'm pregnant and has a list of medications that can be used. If you didn't get one maybe you can get one from your doctor.

  • I'm in the same boat. It stinks! My gums/ teeth hurt so bad but I don't want to waste my time going to a dentist if they won't help me since I'm pregnant.
  • Generally you will always be advised to take care of dental "emergencies" hen pregnant. Not doing so and leaving a possible infection is far worse than fixing it early on. I have had dental work done when pregnant no issues. Usually I go in and they find out the root of the problem and run it by my OB and then complete the work. Even if they have to do a temporary fix for some reason it's never a good idea to completely put it off.

  • My Obgyn office said all cleaning and routune dental work (fillings, crowns, even X-rays ext) were ok and gave me a list of dental medications that were ok to take. Poor dental hygiene and oral infections can be bad for the baby. I had three fillings done about 2 weeks ago ( at 25 weeks). Every dentist is different on their comfort level and may request permission from your Obgyn before doing any work on you.
  • I just informed my dentist that I am pregnant and he was actually really happy I had kept my 6 month cleaning and check up. He said lots of pregnant women will for go the appointment thinking it is somehow bad to have done while pregnant however the opposite is true. Infections in the mouth and gum disease are huge factors in pre term labor and delivery.

My MFM doctor asks when your last dental exam was. I am assuming this is because they think it is also important.

Back to OP question. I had a tooth that cracked in half while I was pregnant with DD1. I had it fixed while I was pregnant. Then when pregnant with DS2 it broke again (thanks to low iron and obsessive ice chewing). The dentist said that I would need oral surgery to fix it however I should wait until baby was born. He did a temp fix on the tooth and that only lasted a few weeks before I started having a ton of pain. I ended up with an infection and elected to have to tooth pulled as it was the lowest risk for baby. Luckily it was a back molar and not visible. I also took antibiotics that were ok to use during pregnancy. I ended up getting fitted for an implant after DS2 was born. It wasn't horrible and there are a lot of treatments available while you are pregnant. I would suggest getting it taken care of soon rather than later. No reason to be stressed and in pain if the dentist can fix you up and safely for baby! Good luck!
  • I am actually a dental assistant, most dentist if not all just need to talk to your obgyn to make sure you are not a high risk and if they feel it is safe to take an xray (with double layered led aprons)
  • I had to have a root canal. Pain is finally gone.
