Should I start being concerned ??

edited July 2015 in January 2016 Moms
So I was going to post this yesterday but I've been pretty relaxed surprisingly with this pregnancy. Ignore my obnoxious ticker, I should be 17 weeks Tuesday (my date changed a lot during first tri). I'm considered high risk for previous miscarriages, none of them I saw the heart beat, with this pregnancy I've been on baby aspirin. Yesterday I had what I thought might be Braxton hicks? I couldn't tell if it was coming and going but regardless my uterus felt hard for a good 15 minutes, I chugged some water and laid down and it went away. I had an orgasm and of course got the rock hard uterus and it went away, now again I'm doing dishes and still rock hard for about 10 min now? I know no one can tell me what's going on with my body, but it seems early to get these? There's really no pain at all just hard uterus. I know if they get rythemaric I should call the doctor/ go to er, but what if my uterus is staying hard for about 10 min sometimes? Thoughts? I'm finding mixed answers online!

Eta: I called my doctor and they weren't concerned. They said if there's any pain that I should then go to ER or if they become frequent. At first the receptionist said go to the ER and I though God no. Thankfully everything is good, need to start drinking more water!

Re: Should I start being concerned ??

  • Obviously ask your doctor for their opinion, but it does sound like how my BH contractions were with DD. I can't remember when I started noticing them but they were frequent and lasted for a while when they happened.

  • I'm going to call her tomorrow, I just wondered what others experiences were because I haven't read much first time moms noticing it this early and them lasting that long.
  • I've been getting them a lot this week too! (Almost 16 weeks) After orgasm, and the last few nights before bed. I'm a FTM and had no idea what was going on until I posted a symptom here and someone told me it was most likely Braxton Hicks. Looks like you've researched some yourself, but my takeaways from my googling were that:
    1. Everyone gets them, but not everyone feels them. Most don't feel them until much later in pregnancy, but it's not uncommon to feel them as early as 12 weeks.
    2. They are not harmful to baby, and *usually* painless to mom.
    3. You should not be worried unless they increase in frequency, occur on a faster time frame, or if they are associated with bleeding.

Hope this helps, but of course call your doc line if you are still really concerned! I've only had it happen maybe 5-6 times total, and they last anywhere from 10-30 minutes. So far, I haven't been worried, but your peace of mind is important so call if that will help ease your mind!
  • I think if you're really attuned to your body you notice things that other people might not realize are happening. There was a lady in the symptoms post the other day who posted with similar symptoms @ only 16 wks.
I think I first started noticing with DD around the time of her A/S @ 18 wks.
They will probably happen all the way up til the end, but if they become really bothersome try sitting or lying on your left side and just relaxing for a bit, drink some water or take deep breaths.
  • @StephPegasus @kemerson531 thanks for the input guys! I don't have pain so maybe I'm just noticing it more because I'm more attuned like you said, I just had no idea they could last that long. Thanks for some peace of mind!
  • No problem, that's what we're here for. Keep us posted if you do call your doc!
  • @StephPegasus I'm pretty sure you were the one who clued me in to mine in another thread! After much internet study, pretty sure you were totally right. Thanks so much! :)
  • Ha you're welcome! I couldn't remember who it was but I knew someone else had similar symptoms... Then I saw your comment up there and wondered. :)
  • I read too some women are just naturally going to contract more and *most* of the time it doesn't do anything to change the cervix but I'll call tomorrow and see what she says. Thanks guys for being my piece of mind!

You have BH from about 8 weeks but usually don't feel them until later. I would not be concerned but would make sure to mention it to my doctor.
