Testing positive for strep B

I was told around 30 weeks I had traces of strep B in my urine. (Currentntly 35 weeks) The doctors told me it's nothing serious but they'll have extra IV's hooked up to me when I go into labor. I didn't know exactly what it was so I looked it up and now have freaked myself out because it says how my son could have multiple things wrong but the worse of all was I could end up losing him. Have any mothers had strep B before. I

I have strep b as well. The doctor assured me it is ok as long as I am on the necessary antibiotics. Try not to worry about it, that's why they will put you on antibiotics as soon as you are in labor.

  • It is really not a big deal. If you get the correct amount of antibiotics while in labor your baby will be fine. My sis just had her baby and was positive for it but is allergic to penicillin so they had to treat her with an alternative antibiotic. Baby is fine. The hospital wanted to do an extra day of monitoring but that was the only thing that was done differently. Don't stress about it, it is actually very common.
  • Dr. Google will convince you that a stubbed toe is a death sentence. It's really not that big of a deal and way more common than you think. You will get antibiotics every 4 hours during labour and are considered suitably treated after 2 doses of the meds. If you don't get enough of the meds before delivery then the hospital may keep you an extra 24 hours to monitor the baby. Typically there are no issues and everyone is fine. In rare cases the baby could end up with serious side effects but the same can be said for many illnesses that you wouldn't worry at all about.
  • I tested positive this time around - I didn't with my other two. Of course I googled and was not thrilled with what I found. Stupid internet. I knew what it was and knew that it wasn't a huge deal, but that didn't stop me!

My biggest concern this time around is a fast labor and not being able to receive any or the adequate amount of antibiotics. I was at the hospital less than two hours before my second child was born. Had no idea I was in active labor. With this one, I dreamed of another med-free delivery (thus no IVs to worry about) where I went in a little late and had her quickly like I did with my second. So this throws a wrench in things, but after logging off google I told myself I will listen to my body and go when I need to, and that it should more than likely work out just fine. I should know by now not to make a plan. ;)
  • I tested positive for GBS with my first. I got antibiotics during labor and everything was just fine. DD is a happy and healthy 2 year old :)

DItto, only a now 3 year old! It is very common and NBD as long as it is diagnosed and you receive antibiotics during delivery.
  • I'm delivering at a birth center and also tested positive for it. They need me to get to the birth center a little earlier than they'd normally want me there but I just get the antibiotics, I am not going to worry about it. There is nothing I could do to prevent a positive test and I know everything will work out fine.
