Crazy Sh@t your doctors have said...

So I go to see a hematologist earlier this week - whom I've never met before. Immediately I cannot handle his nose hairs. Come on, really. Do I need to look at these hairs?? Okay, that's in my mind and I keep my thoughts to myself. As we discuss my issues, he begins to navigate his computer. I mean maybe - let me give this guy credit - maybe he has access to some top
Medical websites that are wonderful and informative. But hey, I was kind of hoping he'd have the knowledge in his head, you know? Or - if he needed to look up the proper course of action - go inside and ask a colleague or check you computer there. Jeesh! Bottom line was I had already done my research, knew what he was going to prescribe and was there for a prescription. Okay - after all that (which again I'm chuckling about because my OB and I knew what I needed from him) - he asks me my weight. Now, why doesn't this doctor look at my chart? So I have to say my weight out loud. Now it's awful I cannot even share it with you. Numbers I have never seen before and at that point 37.5 weeks prego. So I tell him. Then he looks a me baffled and says, "Oh man, that's gonna be A LOT of liquid IV and will take some time." What!?!?! As I sat on that table staring at his nose hairs and his little computer on his lap, I began to imagine the gigantic barge they would have to have hauled in Filled with IV steroids in order to pump up this fatty! Thank goodness I can laugh about this and thank goodness I had those nose hairs to preoccupy me.

Any stories you can share?

  • Well a couple weeks ago I had an incision check & when I made the appointment I told them I wanted to see my doctor. Well I get there and am waiting & this crazy quack a doodle doc comes in & immediately starts going off about how he doesn't think they took my uterus out during my hysterectomy because people who have a hysterectomy start having sex like there on there honeymoon & if they took my whole uterus out and i have sex where is the sperm gonna go.. to my kidneys?! & what if your bowels come out. I literally sat there horrified & left in tears calling my doctor I was supposed to see saying what the f**k did I just walk into. ~X(

^^^^ exactly. I wasn't even asking about sex or talking when he came in & started saying all that crazy sh*t. :-S
  • Not stupid but funny. Before getting KU with my first I had to meet with the high risk practice just to go over things and get some tests done so we knew exactly where we were starting from and know what type of additional treatment I might need once I finally got pregnant. A few short months later we were pregnant and had our first appointment. It just so happened to be with the same Dr we originally met with. She walks into the room, looks at us, smiles and says, "well I know what you two have been doing!"

Okay so he might have long nose hairs and a terrible bedside manner and the comment about needing a lot of iv whatever because liquid iv doesn't make any sense. but with electronic medical records we all do our admission paperwork on computers. Like I couldn't even do and inpatient admission without a computer he prob was not surfing the Internet. And I also always have the patient give me their weight because often times when the patient comes up and gets weighed it's not put in the system right away. And I need it for the paperwork. Keep in mind when you go to hospital there will be computers and the doctors and nurses may even ask the same question over and over. It makes our job a lot easier if you just answer the question. Most of the time it's not be rude or make you feel bad about your self.

When I first took the pregnancy test I made an appointment to see my Family doctor.

So Doctor R comes in and says what can I do for you today? I told him I peed on a stick and it told me I was pregnant... He said well I am a family doctor I cant help you with talking sticks!!!!!

Award goes to Doc R for best respons ever!!!!!

    Love that lol!
  • The OB I had with my first told me I needed an induction because she was going on vacation for a week and "you do NOT want to be 41 weeks pregnant." Which is how far along I would be when she got back. Like she's the only one who could deliver my baby -.-
  • I asked my OB about vaccinations because she had never mentioned it before to me and I'm getting pretty far along in the pregnancy. She was clearly in a hurry to get out of there so at the end of the appt she gets up to leave without asking me if I had any questions or concerns. I mentioned I had a question while she was scrambling to get out of there, and awkwardly mentioned that a lot of people on a pregnancy forum (lol I know) mentioned getting a tdap... and essentially if she could tell me a little about that. She squinted her eyes at me like it was literally the most irrelevant or dumbest question she has ever heard. So then she said "oh they will give that to you at the time of birth". Then I was so embarrassed I just left it at that and said thank you. But WTF! I had to research it on my own and set up a way to receive it and would have never known you were supposed to get that while still pregnant (or at all really) without seeing it on the bump. Anyone else's OB not recommend or discuss tdap??? Is my doc as terrible as I think she is?

I 100% had NO IDEA about that vaccination. I learned it on the bump also!!!! Called my pediatrician and she said in the last ten years whooping cough has been back w a vengeance. So hubby and I got our vaccines this week. I love my OB but they never told me either!!!

  • I told this story once in another thread but I still like it...

I went to a walk-in clinic because I had been having very frequent BHs and wanted to get checked for a possible UTI/YI/BV. Due to a history of bleeding throughout my pregnancy, I asked that he not use a speculum for the swabs (I just didn't want the added stress of spotting afterwards if I could avoid it). I'm sure I was also a little tensed up during. But afterwards he asked if I was delivering vaginally or by c-section. I said vaginally as far as I knew. He said, "well you have a VERY small vagina. Has your doctor never told you that?" I bust laughing, then looked at him like he was insane and said, "you know everything stretches right?"

I shared with my OB who also got a good laugh.

    Same here.
  • I have a uterine fibroid. Earlier in my pregnancy, we went to the obgyn, and I had started sporting a cute little bump. It was sticking out more on the right side during one of my visits. I, an excited first time mommy, said, "I think she likes this side." The doctor looked at me, laughed and said, "That's probably just your enormous fibroid. It's bigger than your baby." Then she laughed again and walked out of the room.

This may not have been so bad, but at this point no one had explained the fibroid to us. We knew there was one, but not that it was so gigantic that it was visibly sticking out. Because of this insensitive doctor, I felt like some gross, huge growth was taking over the precious space meant for my baby.

It turns out it wasn't the fibroid, which is anchored in a very different spot.

Oops! I also wanted to add that the very first OB I saw at my first appointment told me I had nice birthing hips. Yeah, that was my first and last appointment with him.

Haha! My OB said I have great breast feeding boobs as she was doing an initial breast exam! I was flattered but what a weird and pointless compliment... :/
  • Not my doctor but my daughter's old pedi ticked me off. We were in for a third time for an ear infection when she was just over a year old that just would not clear up (actually developed in the other ear while still on the second antibiotics for the first ear). She said she was going to switch her to a third antibiotic. Well, I asked if there were any other options (meaning when did they start looking at tubes, was there any other options for pain cause my daughter had been miserable for like 3 weeks already, etc...). She looked at me and said "sure, don't bring her back in, and I won't treat her" and then asked what pharmacy. I was so shocked I think I actually teared up a bit. I was going on over 3 weeks at that point of little to no sleep along with my daughter who was in continual pain. Fortunately that antibiotic cleared it up, and I switched pedis as soon as we got the all clear.
  • A couple years back i went to my dr for recurrent pain during sex. The medical assistant (who thankfully is no longer there) was always super rude and insensitive- i literally cringed everytime she spoke to me.

She asked me why i was there to see the dr...what my symptoms were etc. I explained how sex had become painful and she interrupted me and veryyy rudely and demandingly proclaimed "well have you been tested for HIV?!?!" in such a nasty tone. I explained that i do not have HIV and she said " well then i dont know whats wrong with you!" and walked out.

I was literally shocked. First no- i do not have HIV and second how in the world does that relate to painful intetcourse??

Good news is i never saw her again after that! =D>

    Wow that's nuts!!!
  • These are great stories - feel a little more light hearted:)
  • I'd ask why your OB wants to wait until after you deliver for the tdap....I was told it will give baby some immunity too, if it's done in the third trimester, and will help protect them until they get theirs.

This was my problem exactly! Still not sure why my Dr would keep this benefit from me. I went and got the tdap at 33 weeks though, and I'm having close family do the same asap.

It's NPR, but the craziest thing was when a doctor questioned me on whether or not I had asthma. I was diagnosed with it as a baby and had been dealing with it since. (I was like 17 at the time that the doc asked me) So anyway, I assure that yes I have asthma and she said "are you sure you aren't just out of shape?" At this point I was running track and field which meant 3 hours practice everyday and with a minimum of five miles ran each day. (I was a muscular 118lbs) My jaw hit the floor. Needless to say, I never went back to her.

  • Haha! My OB said I have great breast feeding boobs as she was doing an initial breast exam! I was flattered but what a weird and pointless compliment... :/

My doc said the same thing at my first appointment. Except he used the word nipples.... You have great nipples for breastfeeding. Um, thanks I guess?
  • At our first appointment one of my midwives said that God blessed us with this baby. Later she said that jesus chose us to raise this child. My husband and I are both atheist and wrote that on our admission paperwork. The paperwork that she had right in front of her. We didn't know what to say. We looked at each other in amazement that she would say this then sat in awkward silence the rest of the appointment. We weren't offended but we were a bit confused as to why she felt so comfortable saying this. I have to say, she's lucky it was me and my husband and not someone that would have reported her.
  • When I got pregnant I didn't have a family Dr (they are super hard to find in most parts of Canada) so I went to a walk in clinic to confirm my home pregnancy test. I got pregnant our first try so totally weren't expecting it and although I planned to, I hadn't started prenatal vitamins yet. The doctor walks in and first says "so is this good news or bad news?"...umm how bout you tell me the result first? Thought it was a pretty unsympathetic way of asking if it was planned. Then after we told him it was planned he asked if I had been taking prenatal vitamins. I told him i hadn't started yet and he got this look of absolute horror on his face. Told me I should have started months ago and I am putting the baby at unnecessary risk of spina bifida and he needs to send me for an ultrasound right away to make sure everything is ok. Way to scare the hell out of a newly pregnant FTM.
  • Not really crazy but just funny...I asked my doctor last time I went in if my LO getting hiccups 5 times a day is healthy and he told me a story about how when he was in med school and he saw hiccups in a fetus for the first time, he panicked and thought the baby was having a seizure. He called a bunch of people over and scared the mom half to death...just hiccups lol
  • At my last appointment, the doctor couldn't feel his skull bones during the cervical check, so she asked that we do a quick scan to make sure he was in the right position for birth. I had a dress on that day, so I just lifted it up for the ultrasound. I have a very dark brown birth mark at the top of my thigh. The doctor says, "Ooohh! I really like your birthmark!" Weird.. The only thing I could come up with was, "Uh thanks.. It looks like rotten grapes." Hahaha!
  • I went to a new dermatologist a couple of weeks ago and the very first thing she says to me when she walks in the room was "I see you have a tumor in your belly!" I was not amused

I'm kinda surprised by all the posts for OBs that didn't recommend TDAP during pregnancy. It is a little scary to me that so many docs don't believe in following the most recent recommendations put forth by the CDC. It is standard practice to give it (typically at the 28 week appt) based in new recommendations in 2010. I'd educate yourself and consider getting it before delivery. The purpose is to pass your baby immunity since they can't get the vaccine until 2 months of age so waiting until after delivery defeats that purpose!

    https://www.cdc.gov/pertussis/pregnant/hcp/pregnant-patients.html

The only reason I knew about the TDAP was from The Bump! I brought it up to my midwife and she said "oh yeah that's right you do need to get that." They don't administer it there so I assume that's why she forgot? She's been awesome otherwise!
  • My OB said its not something that's required unless there's an outbreak. They actually recommend not getting it unless you have to. Keep in mind I'm in Canada, and it's also called something else up here.
  • At my very first appointment my husband was in the room as the midwife was doing my internal exam. She went 'oh my you're narrow!!!' I said 'oh is that a bad thing?' Thinking as a first time mom would it be problematic for delivery. With her hand still inside me she looks right at my husband and goes 'I dunno does your husband got a big head?'
