Swollen and scared

I'm hoping for someone to ease my current angst. I'm in my third trimester and my legs are swollen. When I squat down, they feel like they are going to explode. Is this normal for only 30 weeks?? I don't remember this with my first pregnancy 8 years ago. Any insight would be helpful.

Re: Swollen and scared

  • I would call your doctor or LandD because swelling can be a sign of pre E. Is there any other kind of swelling other then your legs or is it just your legs? For some people it may be normal for others it might not I would call and see.

A little puffiness is normal. I'd be calling about swelling like you describe. Call now and see if doc wants you to go to hospital or wait until your next appointment.

Definitely call and let them know! Like pp said, could be nothing, could be something more serious.
I've had mild swelling this pregnancy and compression tights really did help. While at times my skin felt tight, it never really felt like you've described. I'd just get checked out and see what they say!
  • I'm 32 weeks and have had on-and-off swelling since around 28 weeks. Some days my feet and calves swell up a ton, so much so it's painful to walk on and if I squat down my calves feel like water balloons ... very uncomfortable. Other days I have no swelling whatsoever. What seems to help is making sure I stay hydrated throughout the day and putting my feet up as often as I can (and not wearing shoes that dig into my feet at all). Usually my swelling goes down by morning after I've been lying in a bed all night long off my feet. My doctor told me last week that it's very common at this point to have some swelling.

That being said, if this is unusual for you and the swelling doesn't go down after putting your feet up for awhile and drinking plenty of fluids, I would contact your doc just to be on the safe side. I was a bit alarmed the first time I swelled up, but it's just been on and off since then and a normal occurrence.
  • I am in the same situation. So I saw my doctor yesterday thete us good swelling and bad swelling. I have the bad swelling where my legs look shiny and my legs pit if pressed. I am to rest as often as possible and elevate legs and push fluids. You should get checked because more rest and monitoring may be needed. My type of swelling can affect the heart, called third spacing so please be careful
  • Elevate your feet above your heart. That is what my doctor told me when I had swelling (kankles lol). After a day of elevating my feet, I was 100% better!
  • Thank you!! This is exactly what I am experiencing. I felt better today after a good night sleep.
